I've had this for quite some years, it holds 50 22lr, nose down.

The lid says "National Rifle Association, Barr Bldg, Washington D.C."

I was just wondering if anyone knew more about it.....

:) I have not seen that before. It surely looks like a
collectors item to me. The wood looks like Curly Maple
to me. I will check back on this post for more info. Don

What is it?

50 holes, 50 States...

Did the NRA have a Commemorative "something" back when this was made.

They seem to be always cranking out guns for this and that.. but they would not fit in the holes..

50 22 rounds.. one box worth.. a 22 match - "accessory" shell holder?

I'm guessing it was for a sanctioned NRA match??

Here's a pic of a similar one..

Looks like an ammo block for use in small-bore rifle matches (and a very fancy one, at that). I have something similar in the wooden case in which my late Uncle's Winchester Model 52 resides (he won the national small bore individual championship in 1939 with that rifle, and his team won the team championship that year, as well). I used it (and similar blocks) when I shot small bore competition in the '60s. Those matches were fired single shot, with each round loaded one at a time, rather than using the magazine, and the ammo blocks ensured you had the required 50 rounds. Very nice piece!

Ammo block. For single shot loading. Most small bore 50 and 100 yard rifle match's are 10 shots per bull. The block helps you keep track of how many shots you have used, and not get penalized for extra shots or lose points for too few shots on a target.

This could have been a premium for membership or perhaps a prize in a match.

Very interesting. I have one that looks the same, except the wood grain is not as nice and there is no NRA identification. The hinges and clasp, however, are identical. Don't remember where I got it, but it was probably handed down to me from my dad.
