So as not to steal the thread on Bourbon whiskey, I thought I'd ask you aficianados of Bourbon what you consider to be the ideal recipe for my favorite cocktail, the Manhattan. Here's my most-used version for on-the-rocks:

2 jiggers of Jim Beam.
1 jigger of sweet vermouth. I prefer Martini & Rossi.
1 teaspoon of Marischino cherry syrup.
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Stir gently.
Add ice cubes.
Top with one stemmed Marischino cherry.

For special occasions with special friends, substitute Rebel Yell for Jim Beam.

p.s. I use a good-size jigger and this makes a good-size drink!

Next?

I know it is a little early for some felony thread drift but...Try my favorite cocktail, the Brandy Manhatten. Substitute a good brandy and use just a dash of sweet vermouth. I like mine on the rocks with a cherry but straight up works well too. Very smooth before or after dinner, with or without a good/cheap cigar. (o;

Here's mine, prefer Canadian Whiskey over Bourbon :

2-1/2 jiggers of Crown Royal or Canadian Club (I prefer Crown)
1 jigger of Noilly Prat Sweet Vermouth
2 dashes of Angostura bitters
2 Maraschino cherries - preferably with stems
1-2 teaspoons of Maraschino cherry syrup

Add crushed, or whole ice and stir.

My favorite manhattan recipe is Jack Daniels over ice. Oh, wait ! I think that's my favorite martini recipe also ! :D

No, no, no! You must start with the ice cubes in the glass to insure maximum cooling as the ingredients are added. I agree that Martini & Rossi is the only vermouth worthy of use. And a 2:1 ratio is ideal. But using both bitters and cherry juice is redundant. I use only the Angostura bitters - cherry juice is acceptable as a substitute only when away from home in bars where they are too clueless to have bitters on hand. Your Jim Beam is fine if you prefer bourbon. I like the taste of Canadian whiskey better in a manhattan, but in that case I substitute an olive for the cherry.

If I'm making Manhattans, it's Old Grand-dad in a rocks glass over ice, a dash of Angostura bitters, Martini & Rossi sweet vermouth to taste (my wife prefers more vermouth than I do), and a few maraschino cherries. Nice and simple.

Hmmm.... I think it may be a Manhattan Sunday this weekend.

The staple drink at our deer camp is the brandy Manhattan (Manhattan soup). It's been that way for over thirty years, because that's what the owner likes.

We use E&J brandy (big bottles are cheap), but the recipe is otherwise identical to yours. A couple of those before dinner and I'm ready for euchre or buckaroo! :D

Brandy Manhattans are (to paraphrase the old joke), like a woman's breast, one is not enough and three are too many. (o;

vodka manhattan

this was my aunt's favorite drink (god rest her soul)

a spinster and all of 105 pounds....and how she knew about
this drink is beyond me....but she made a believer out of me!
(thanks, aunt marge!)

vodka manhattan

6 parts vodka (you can use any, but top shelf is best)
3 parts sweet vermouth
1 part dry vermout

you can adjust this to your own taste...some go
more 50/50 vodka/vermouth...it is up to you and
your taste

you should always use more sweet vermouth to
give it the good taste and the amber color

this is NOT a drink for lightweights (alcohol-wise)
(mixing vodka and wine is a dangerous thing to do)

you can use ice (not much)
or you can mix with ice and pour, leaving the ice behind
a twist of a peel of lime and get those oils into the glass

it's a keeper!!!!

ps....you can also try rum as the primary too....not bad at all
dont know what they call them at the bar, though....

Crown Royal & M&R red for the Manhatttan, Johnnie Black & 1/2 M&R red/white for the perfect Rob Roy, both on the rocks w/cherry. For Vodka Martinis Absolut or Grey Goose, for Gin Martinis Tangueray, both w/M&R white on the rocks with pitted olive. Our generation is the only one who still drinks this stuff.
