Been thinking about this round since the wsm's and wssm's came out. Now that it has been out for a few years.......what do you guys think? 40grain V-MAX at 4600 fps????????? 75 grainer at 3500 fps?

Would have to start from scratch.......gun, scope, dies,cases......is it worth fooling with or should I just shoot 58 grainers out of my 243?

Momma already said I could get it for Christmas! ;-) Any owners with experiences to share?

This caliber is reported to be a barrel burner. So much so that the factory bbls. were chrome lined. Go with the 204 Ruger. Its the amount of powder burned, I think.

There was a lot of hype when the WSM/WSSM rounds came out and some of it was true and some wasn't. They are shorter so you can have a gun that is lighter and they are slightly more efficient and use less powder, so theoretically the recoil is a bit less. I had a .25 WSSM and I loved the stubby little round, and my M-70 with Leupold 2-7X was very light and short for a brush gun but could still reach way out there as well as any 25-06. It also had very light recoil, but I was afraid ammo would get harder to find and get more expensive so I sold it. From now on I am sticking to the basic rifle calibers(.223,243,270,30-06,308, and 30/30) since I don't reload.

If you reload and like to play around with something new, then go for it, other wise stick with a 22-250 or your .243.

I own two lightweight rifles in .270 WSM. A Tikka stn. stl. lite and a Remington Mountain rifle. The felt recoil is much greater with the two WSM's compared to my other three .270's (2 bolt actions and an auto).
I installed Limbsaver recoil pads on them and the felt recoil was reduced significantly IMO.
I agree that the .270 ammo is easier to find (and in most cases less expensive), but I really like the lightweight of the WSM rifles and the short actions, just a personal preference.

What are you shooting AT?

Paper? Groundhogs? Prarie Dogs? Coyotes?

Anything bigger, and you should look elsewhere.

If the question was to me..

crows, coyotes, paper, steel plates. Just thinking about playing with a new round and a new gun. I degaused a lot of disc space when I retired the last time so I have room and need for new information/experiences.

I just like to challenge myself with anything that requires accuracy. Pitching pennies, horsehoes...............

I would think something with a more common case would be less frustrating. I would think the 22-250 or 220 swift would do what you want and be easier to find brass for.
Not sure about the tiny bullets in the 243.

If that's the case, then go for it! Just remember, the WSSM series rifles are doing rather poorly sales wise. If you can get brass and or loaded cartridges before you get the gun, do it. The stuff is already getting harder to find.

A cousin of mine hunts with a .243WSSM, and had a real hard time getting ammo before deer season last year. Long story short, he's sitting on enough now to get him through a Mad Max movie.

I had two back in Albuquerque in 89-92. Used to go up almost to Sante Fe and shoot prarie dogs and shot hundreds of them down in Roswell. Got some pretty good over the shoulder video somewhere around the house.

I've about decided that if I do buy a 22 cal it will be the old reliable 22-250 again.

I think I have 5-6 22-250's in the "stable" and if you can find a Remington limited ed with the laminated thumbhole stock, get it. Mine is the most accurate of the lot and that is shooting the green box stuff. I hope to have the time to really work up loads for it but time seems to go to other things. The Kimber Long master did not show the level of craftsmanship and accuracy I expected for the price. The safety takes a 500 lb gorilla to move from on to fire.
