New Watch
Try the Sportsman's Guide. They have a G.I. style, stainless case with two fabric Bands and luminous hands for about $30.00 . I've used one for several years and had no problems.

Orvis, Eddie Bauer and LL Bean make conservative looking watches for under $80 that are very durable.

I saw some nice looking Seikos for that sum and less in a pawn shop, if you can't afford a good watch, new. Check them carefully, though. and be prepared to change batteries.
And most weren't warranted as water resistant. Look for their Sports 100 and 150 series.

Casio G Shock for me, they have a lot of useful features such as stopwatch, chimes, alarm modes, light, 12/24 time format and it's water resistant to 200m. I wore one every day as a heavy equipment mechanic and held up to the shock from using sledge hammers, 1" drive impact wrenches, air hammers and welding spatter. I've owned a few over the years and the only thing that really hurt them was exposure to solvents, the rubberized casing starts to deteriorate after 5 years or so.

Watches are my first addiction, wrist or pocket. The best performing watch that I have is my Seiko Arctura Kinetic. Good weight, keeps perfect time, good style but not flashy. Like it more than any rolex or omega or daily use.

I've got a Seiko Sports 100 that I have had so long I can't even remember when I didn't have it. It's got to be at least 25 years. Just change the battery ever three years or so.
A sad thing is my sister gave me two of Dad's watches from the 1960-70's. Both Bulova mechanical self-winders. One 23 jewel and the other a 26 jewel. I was going to give them to my sons and was going to have them cleaned and adjusted first. I couldn't find anyplace that will work on them locally. They want to send them off somewhere and said it would probably be several hundred each to go through them.
I used to repair pocket watches and would clean, lube and adjust watches like these for around $20. Times do change

Try browsing Watchuseek Watch Fora for some info. Want soemthing classy and relativley inexpensive get a Seiko automatic. I have some ETA and one Valjoux movements in autos. I highley regard the Seikos, even though I don't have any of their automatics.

Since I always have a cell phone a watch is strictly jewelry for me, so with that being said, I don't want a nice, expensive watch that will last forever. I get a new one every few years since I am hard on my watches and they get scratched up and I'm ready for something different. I have not had any trouble with Timex, Casio, Seiko, Kenneth Cole, Fossil, etc. and Walmart, Steinmart, and Sams Club, all have pretty decent prices

For your upper end information, I carried my old Rolex in for cleaning (an 18K presidential day/date) and asked about trading for a new 18K Yatchsman. They offered me $9K for mine which purchased for $3K some years ago, BUT wanted $16K to trade. Rolex's are good and do appreciate in value, but go buy a Timex and throw it away when it fails.
I once autopsied a guy that had been at the bottom of the bay for two years and his Timex was right on time. I sent Timex a picture of his decomposed, crab eaten body with the caption "Takes a licking, but keeps on ticking" I never heard back and obviously they never used my picture as an advertisement.

Got a S&W watch a year or so ago with one of my gun purchases. It has the "night glow" feature when the button is pushed. It's my favorite watch for everyday wear and when hunting. I'm sure they're under $100.

A couple of months ago The New Yorker magazine had a tremenously interesting short article about watches. It came down to how digital technology has effected the watch industry over the past twenty-thirty years. It compared watches that cost $1.00 to manufacture in China to watches that cost $495.00 to manufacture in Switzerland; they found a 1 second variance in time over a year.
I am not an advocate of things made Chinese. I do however question the true value of things. There have been (and still are) a number of high end time pieces I have always lusted for that I could never afford, and because of that have always questioned how much they are truly worth.

For a beater, I paid $80 or so for a S&W tritium at Big 5 a fewyears back, and what a joke. I have to squint and cover it up to sheild any outside residule light to see the time in the dark. My Luminox is great, well worth the extra money. I'd like a Ball watch someday when I see some deeper discounts, and have the $. I read somewhere in a watch forum that the manufacturer of the S&W triutium watch use tubes that are rejected by Ball, Traser, and Luminox.

I have a couple of Seiko diver's watches, and a gold Elgin my great-grandfather once owned. Also a cheap Casio that I used to do my taxes on (it has a calculator). But, like many others, I use my cell phone to tell time. Don't carry or wear a watch.

I won't have it unless it has a dial and says Timex. Oh, and costs less than $40.

Being a watch fanatic I have owned every thing that I could afford at the time. Rolex are out of the question now, great watch but overpriced IMHO, Omega Speedmaster keeps going up and it is a winder, Sinn from Germany U1 orU2 are virtually indestructible but in that over 1K league. A new watch I came onto that is built like a tank is Reactor, Swiss quartz very sporting and tough as nails. If you can find a Orsa Sea Angler or Pro Diver pick it up. Made for Canadian Military one darned good watch. However I don't know if the are still available. getting watch fever is harmful to you health or at least harmful to your pocketbook. Invicta makes some good watches and some mass produced low end if you can get a good one in their high end line they are well made and priced to sell. good luck If price is no problem check out RGM the last of the truly top end American watches, look at their diver and 100 years of flight. Roland Murphy is an artist and was trained years ago by the best the Swiss had to offer. But like all things, cars, guns, and watches hand made and hand fitted cost mucho dollars. the watch world is a lot like the gun world the more you have the more you want....A fever!!

Casio wave secptor is a good one. It's linked with the atomic clock. They are about $70.00.....I've had one 5 years without replacing the battery.
Casio has outstanding customer service..IMO......I'll buy another when the time comes.

For me it's like guns, a fascination for mechanical devices. A Sinn with the artficial diamond bearings and a Ball are on my wish list, up there with some more guns when I got bucks to spare. Quartz is so cold and sterile. I have an Invicta 53mm, pocket watch on a wrist. Someone in timezone.com told me it was likely a Myota automatic, another excellent and inexpensive Japanese movement. My last one is a Tissot chrono with a 7750 Valjoux eta. Gains under 30 sec a month.

All I wear anymore are old Seiko Automatics day/date watches with the all stainless case. Usually find them cheep enough but if they need service it costs me around $120 a pop for repairs and cleaning. I have severial though.

DId you ever think that the reason they are hot is because they're from Lebanon and wear those robes all the time. For cryin' out loud Shugart, try to start thinking a little more global.

Getting back on topic, you can find Citizen watches for under a hundred. Never buy a battery again, and an outstanding watch brand.

Valjoux is a very reliable movement, Tessot is a good brand. Swiss army are made by both Wenger who is owned by Vitronox. The Wengers are a price point watch with a good reputation, The Vitronox are a higher end of the Swiss watch series, Don't down play Timex as they have come out with a military type chronograph that sells at...hold your breath 400 to500 dollars. The watch market seems to stay solid right now. If one can buy a Omega, Breitling. Hublot, at a good price buy. Omega's time tested Speedmaster with a daily winder movement are always hot especially if the case says qualified for space flight. In the 60s a auto wouldn't work in space due to lack of gravity, and a quartz pulsed waves that could interfere with instruments in a zero gravity environment. Them Omega Speedmaster became the astronauts choice along with the Russians that purchased them for their space program. Don't get involved it is expensive just buy another gun it is cheaper in the long run...Well maybe not now...

I have a "Croton" self winder I payed almost $500 for. It's a lovely piece of machinery, glass back (so you can watch the little gears whirl around) waterproof to 165 ft. etc.
I also have a $9.95 watch from "Walgreens" I wear for yard/automotive work. It keeps time much better. Looks just as nice. And when the battery go's dead (2 yrs and still working) you throw it away, and buy another.

You can get a dead reliable and indestructible Solar Atomic model for 100 bones if you don't mind the ugly Glock like look.

I'm very happy with many of my $100 watches. I took some time and learned about watches and managed to pick up quite a few Swiss automatics under $100. My favorote would be my Swiss Army Ti Ground Force with an ETA 2824 automatic movement that I paid $106 for.

That Timex chrono auto is a Chinese movement. Last Timex I had was an analog quartz a few years back. It was a beater for work. It lost about a minute or two a day. I suspect it would momentarily quit now an then, but that is hard to catch. It was a chinese quartz.
I paid $586 delivered for my Tissot chrono, albeit on the gray market. Tissot doesn't do a lot of re-work in their movements. Given the accuracy of mine I suspect they install a fine timing device at the least. It could easily get a cosc certification without the thermal compensator.

I am far from a yuppy, but I have 2 Fossil watches that have given me great service. One is similar in appearance to a Rolex stainless Date-Just and the other is a black diver type 3 dial chronograph...both well under $100

I have several brands of watches and have come to the conclusion that you can't go wrong with an Invicta. Their Pro-Diver is all stainless steel, automatic movement (Japanese), and water resistant down to 660 feet. I saw these on ShopNBC the other night for $77 and free shipping. I have one that is my beater watch that I have had for 10 years with no problems. These things just can not be beat in this price range.

I read somewhere, where water resistant and waterproof had totally different meanings on wrist watches. I don't remember the wording....can someone explain..?

The term "Water Proof" was dropped back in the 70s and is no longer used because there is no such thing. New standards were developed and the "Water Resistant" mark has come to replace the "Water Proof".
If your watch is water resistant it is water proof to a certain extent, and can be summarized with some figures. These figures however, do not generally indicate the point at which a watch's resistance to pressure is expected to fail. For example, a watch rated 50 Meters would not be expected to survive Scuba Diving to 50 Meters due to the pressure changes exerted on the case through body movement, but would be expected to survive a dunk in the pool or a shower.
50 Meters/160 Feet - you don't have to worry about getting it wet.
100 Meters/300 Feet - a can survive most any surface water situation.
200 Meters/660 Feet - the bare minimum for a scuba diving and white water
1000 Meters/3300 Feet - the standard for deep diving and salvage divers

Yup, mine is 9 years old and still runs just fine.
Only one I could find with big enough number for me to read.

Whatever you do, don't let your wife, if you have one, buy you one for Christmas. I've got three watches left from my marriage, they all suck in one way or another, they all keep great time, and I'm too cheap to buy another one, when I've got three working watches.
They'll probably outlast me.
