Default Am I getting too old?

I will be 40 exactly two months from tomorrow. I told my wife tonight that I was tired and my back was kind of achy. She promptly informed me that I was getting too old now to sit up til midnight and I didn't get enough sleep. I've been a night owl since I was a baby, and don't have any interest in stopping now. Don't know why; just have a compulsion to sit up late for some reason. Well, am I too old for that **** like she says, or is it something else?

Yes...you're too old.

I'm 41 and I can rarely stay up past 11 o'clock.

Life goes on...deal with it.

40 is young, your eyes haven't even started going yet!

You can stay up till midnight all you want.... if you are working second shift. You need 8 hours sleep wether you know it or not.

Actually, I rather enjoyed second shift when I worked it, stay up late, sleep late and never late for work.

Yes, you're getting too old, but at least you're in good company, and among friends, here... I've got a few years on you, and don't feel too old for anything, yet. Well, maybe, football, and similar roughhousing, but not for any activity that I might have willingly taken on when much younger. Don't let (your modestly) advancing age become an excuse for inactivity or new activities. Life's too short to call it quits prematurely!

Yure just a pup. I'm a couple of decades older than you.. I'm usually a goner by 10PM, but the dogs get me up at 5AM.

BTW, I ain't slept in a bed in 5 years.

I worked as a guard on graveyard about 32 years out of 35 untill I retired in 2000. Old habits are hard to break. I seldom go to bed any earlier than 11:30 pm to 01:00 am.

I am 59 and still working 12 hour shifts 7PM to 7AM. It gets a little harder to flip back to days when I am at the police department but I plan to keep going strong as long as I can.

If you think you are too old consider the alternative.

I'll be 62 next month and I'm still working. I have never eaten well but that's why they make lipitor. I exercise at least five days a week. I can tell the difference if I don't. So far everything still works.

The very worst hours I ever worked was 8pm to 4am at a foundry when I was 18 in wisconsin. (1959). Winter at 4 am is brutal in wisconsin trying to get your car started to go home! At the end of the shift the only thing you could see was the whites of our eyes! You would blow soot your days off. Darn, I miss that job----NOT!

.....one of my old patients told me years ago, that "everything that doesn't hurt, doesn't work....and the things that work I'm just grateful for whether it hurts or not"....

course, he was in his late 80s and still broke horses every spring...

If others dictate your bedtime then yea, maybe you are getting old. Thats what happens in nursing homes.

I'm 52 and seldom sleep for more than six hours regardless of when I go to bed. That means that going to sleep at midnight is about perfect for me.

Hey, you truly are as young, or as old, as you WANT to feel. I'm 48, and on my second deployment to Iraq. No desk job, I leave the wire daily patroling in a Cav platoon. We just so happened to take a PT test today and I scored higher than any other guys in my platoon. And that is mainly twenty-somethings. Am I some health freak who eats nothing but the right foods and is a gym-freak? Ah, no. I live on greasy fried foods, gimme a pizza any day. Yes, I run and do work out some, but not fanatically. The secret, as far as I can tell, is that I mentally refuse to grow up. If you think you're old, you are old.

When I was young they used to say life begins at 40.

Now they say 60 is the new 40. I hit 60 this year. Rarely go to bed before 1am. Always up before noon. Don't need walks to the bathroom unless I had too many beers before going to bed. Few more aches and pains than I used to have, but still able to work on renovating my house. The more you moan, the older you get.

40?????????? You're a pup!!
Growing old is mandatory, but growing up is purely a personal choice. Worst part about being 54 is I still try to do all the things I did when I was in my 20's. Quite frankly, I have been truly blessed with remarkable health-I take a blood pressure pill and an asprin each day and that's it. Course I could live without the bi-focals

Caj, I think you mean you wish you could live without the bifocals. Lots of times, as you grow older, you will find that the early morning offers you more than the late night. Daybreak is a beautiful time of day, and a big ole plate full of cholesterol laden pig and cacklefruit is a real treat. I'm 56 now, and I'm not old, just hitting my stride in middle age. Although my right knee, and a little spot in my lower back will argue that point, now and then. Growing older is great, but maturity is highly overrated.

You've got to start hanging around the right places. The residents here refer to the maintenance man (who is 62) and me as "the kids".

I agree about the working out part, or walking, or whatever. But after standing in one place ten hours a day, my feet and legs are screaming uncle these days. I DO feel better when I was walking regularly, but that was before this B.S. of a job that I do now. I do a sit down job in a stand up fashion, and have had to formally complain to higher ups for a stool, because the immediate boss is....well...you know. I sell parts for a car dealership, and it's not really sit down all the time, but he thinks that we should NEVER sit down. Anyway, I guess I might do better if my butt was up exercising more than what it is.

The hardest job or posistion is standing! I was a guard for 35 years. It involved a lot of standing on certain posts at shift changes etc. It is far easier to walk than standing in one location. I remember my dad once telling me when I was a kid deer hunting with him, he said,: you watch. A cop is always more apt to get his deer than the average person. Thats because they are more used to standing still than anyone else. I found that to be true.

The worst part about growing old is that all the follies and bad decisions of your youth catch up with you. I just turned 60, a combination of being a lifetime non-smoker, a teetotaler, a non drug user and a semi-fitness buff has left me feeling as good as I have ever felt and I take malicious satisfaction in taunting people half my age over their lack of strength, stamina, etc. I recall one girlfriend's mother twitted me about dying my hair, she said "Grow Gray Graciously", I told her I'd let my gray show on my 300th birthday. She saw me a few years later and said "You just might make it."
What was it Satchel Paige said-"How old do you think you'd be if you didn't know hold you was?"

To tell the truth I don't know how I made it this far in life.Still like to hunt & just returned from a deer hunt in Nevada. Son in law & grandson each took bucks but I didn't see anything with horns. But I can't hike like I used to but did pretty well. 9,000 ft. mountain makes me puff every 50 yeards or so. .Finally took a stand & like to froze to death. Camped at 7,000 ft. After all I turned 78 last June but will do it again if drawn. Left camp Oct. 28th & temp was 9 above zero. Glad to be back on the Oregon Coast. Doctor said I'm in damn good shape for the shape I'm in.

Transgressions of ones youth revisit as you age. None the less I’ll do my usual 7.5 mile walk this morning and this afternoon I’ll be picking up branches from the self pruning Willow Oak trees after the latest storm that went thru. Getting old is not for the faint of heart but it’s also what you make of it.

Aging and Being a Night Owl are Two Completely Different Things

I have been a night owl since before my teens
and at 52 I am still a night owl
though I am starting to feel just a bit "Older"

Considering the sorry alternative, I am delighted to be getting older. I may not be able to do everything that I once could but I am still able to feed myself and wipe my own butt; never pee or poop on myself and still enjoy life so I want to keep getting older and older.

I'll figure out what I can and can't do as I go along.

You ain't seen nothing yet.
I say man up, and don't complain. Keep moving forward, you're not even half way there yet.
Take it one day at a time, and count each day as a blessing.

Default I am 77

And the older I get, the better I used to be.

But I can still out-shoot a lot of the kids.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

I find that I don't even care when some sweet young thing holds a door for me; I'm just glad I made it that far.

J-Frame, I am 58, and as I type these words it's 2:50 AM... :-)

I too have been a nightowl since my youth, and I handle it just fine. I don't think the hour you retire is the source of what you're experiencing. I can tell you that as I've aged, I keep discovering new aches and pains I didn't have years ago. That might be what's happening to you, just the normal aging process.

Good luck!

Well it is 4:30 AM here as I type this. I went to bed at 11 last night. Abour 5 hours is all I ever sleep. At 58 my sleeping habits won't change now. Sleeping is a waste of time. I could be in the garage loading up some shotshells for my weekly trip to the trap range!
