Yep, as far as I know, upconverting is kind of like interpolation
as applied to digital pictures. With your 720p set, it will not even
come into play. It should run as 720p. The upconverting is only used
when it's connected to a 1080i/p set. And it's not quite as good as a
player that is truly 1080. But that won't matter unless you upgrade
the TV to 1080. I'm sure even the upconverted 1080 looks pretty
good to most.
Here on the cable, the HD seems to be about a 50/50 split as far
as 720 or 1080. My box tells me which it actually is. And to tell the
truth, I don't see too much difference between the two. They both
look pretty good. Heck, I see some networks that run 720p, and they
seem to look better than a few that run 1080i/p, but I'm sure the
quality of the programming video will determine the final quality.
IE: if the programming run on 1080 is poorly focused, it's kind of a
waste. I often see sharp focused programs on 720p that can look
as good or better as a medium focused program run on 1080i.
My new digi camera records 720p, and actually I'm kind of glad it
does at this point, cuz playing 1080 on a puter takes a lot more puter
horsepower to run smoothly. Mine is getting a bit aged and needs an
upgrade. And this next upgrade will have to be almost from the ground
up being as all the hardware is different now.
I keep putting it off as the longer I wait, the more power I'll get for
my money.
