Default Read the Warnings

My neighbor, whom I hadn't seen in a month, walked by the house yesterday. His left forefinger was wrapped in a bandage. Seems that he was applying some belt dressing to his kid's car while the engine was running. He reached down to spray some dressing on the lower pulley and his finger got trapped between the belt and the pulley. Laid the finger open to the bone. He said he knew it was a dumb move.

I said, "John, last week I changed the serpentine belt on my truck. The lawyer's warning on the box said, "Caution! Do not attempt to install this belt with the engine running!" I said, "John, at the time I wondered who the hell would be dumb enough to try something like that?"

Lessons learned................

I sympathize with him. I know that really hurt, big time! The other day, through an act of clumsiness, I cut the little finger on my left hand. I screamed like a little girl. It wasn't really much of a cut either. I can only imagine how much pain he experienced.

People just don't realize the dangers lurking under the hood. I was in a van pool once. I was the only one who would put oil / coolant / windshield washer fluid in the darn vehicle for about a year. So I finally rebelled and said someone else has to do it or let it run dry, I'm done. I just assumed one of the other men would be shamed into taking a turn. I guess they don't make men like they used to. No shaming this bunch!

One cold day, one of the ladies got out and started filling the empty windshield washer fluid reservoir with the engine running and her long hair dangling precariously near the spinning pulleys and belts. I rushed out and took over. Everyone thought I was some kind of caveman anti-feminist. (I'm not! I swear!) I just had a horrific vision of what could have happened.

Just the other day I caught myself reaching into the discharge shoot of my lawnmower to clear some blockage. Now the mower was off but I had this funny feeling that I should know better...

I never read warning labels or the warnings they put in manuals. One time I was using a one-man gasoline posthole digger while wearing a nylon windbreaker. The ground was hard so I leaned into the machine to add some weight. The hot exhaust caught my windbreaker on fire and it melted into my skin. It required an ER doctor to pick the material out of my arm. When I finally did look at he manual it stated, keep clear of hot muffler and something about wearing loose clothing.

It is hard to read the warning on a moving fanbelt. Had I been able to read "do not attempt to cut fanbelt with pocket knife while belt is moving", I would not have a dandy scar to impress the grandsons. The nice part of the whole episode was that I had just sharpened the knife.

Years ago went a man could work on his car I was adjusting the dwell on the point of a 1974 Javelin AMX. I was reaching behind the distributor trying to fit the allen wrench into adjustment nut. my 5 year old was with me helping. I miss the nut contact the wire (you adjust the dwell with the engine running) so I get a shock, I swear, the boy asked if it hurt and I say Yes, and reach back there again and get a second shock. he said if it hurt why did you do in again? I did read the instructions and it didn't help.

Years ago I saw a man (instructor at automotive tech school) drop his tie into the crankshaft pulley of a Lincoln Continental while it was running. It snapped his head down as the tie went around the pulley. The huge fan clipped his nose just enough to draw blood - any more contact would probably have been fatal. The school required instructors to wear ties, but from that day on his was a clip on.

He's lucky he didn't get his neck broken. One time we were having trouble with a 20 hp blower with like a 3' inlet. A factory rep was there and his tie got sucked into the blower. It didn't catch on anything but our eyes were as big as saucers.

Isadora Duncan was riding with a long scarf around her neck in an open top car and the scarf got caught in the spoked wheel and axle. It jerked her out of the car. Taking her to the hospital after that was a knee jerk reaction in case somebody could 'do something' and turned out to be only a formality.

Warning!

Common sense and self preservation are sometimes not easy to learn.

Example: The Darwin awards.

The warning label on a clothing iron seemed stupid. "Do Not Iron Clothing While Wearing The Item to be Ironed".

But you know someone had done that, otherwise the warning wouldn't be there.

Worst one I ever did: My wife asked once if I wanted to lick the beaters after she got done mixing up a German Chocolate cake. She just handed me the mixer. Being of infinite wisdom I just grabbed with the beaters still attached and started slurping those delicious little buggers, it was like a little slice of taste bud heaven.....until my thumb hit the on switch to the mixer and wound my tongue into the beaters until it bogged down and stopped the motor and just bruised the ever loving daylights out of my tongue.

Kinda reminds me of the warning I saw on a Superman costume in one of the stores around Halloween. It said:

WARNING
Wearing of this Garment does not enable you to Fly.

My favorite warning was the one on an axe I bought years ago informing me that it could cause serious bodily harm. Until that point I had always assumed they were pretty harmless.

Working on the clothes dryer one evening. Saw the label stating "dis-connect power before servicing."What it should have said "if you choose not to disconnect power,at least clear a path to the door for the paramedics". wow!

Countless examples of head scratching warning labels but my favorite will always be Prepper H's:

DO NOT TAKE ORALLY

Was helping a guy jump start his car at a Burger King years ago. In a flash he got his hand caught in the air conditioner pulley and belt as it was spinning and it severely mangled two of his fingers. I took him to the emergency room about 4 blocks away and remember it took about the length of the trip before it really started hurting him.
Happened so fast you really couldn't see it happen.

when I got to Rhein Main AB in Germany there were some rules explained about working on the flightline.

1. you don't wear rings or watches. in this briefing there was picture displayed and we realized that it was somebody's finger. the person working on an engine and instead of getting off the engine stand and moving it 3 feet he decided to just reach for what he was trying to do. he lost his balance and fell about 8 feet to the concrete. he survived the fall but his finger was still hanging on the engine cowling where the ring had caught.

2. you don't walk into props whether they are turning or not. now you would think this would be self explanatory but I can't help but think there was a reason for it otherwise it would not have been mentioned.
turning props can be a bit mesmerizing and the results would be very bad.

3. you don't drive too close behind a taxiing airplane because of the thrust from the engines. I was driving the launch truck on the flightline and drove behind a C-141. no the truck didn't get blown over but the steering felt kind of light for a few seconds. lesson learned. it is a fact that a jet engine can blow a car over and depending upon the size and number of engines it can be farther back than you think.

Back when I was working as a saw operator at the Hunter Douglas blind factory one of the maintenance techs told me a story of a fellow that thought he could stop a 2 foot diameter circular saw blade by hand. It sliced his fingers clean off without slowing down one bit.

Back when I sold Toyota parts, I had a customer that had 2 fingers missing on his right hand and it looked as if his thumb was freshly severed. I asked him what happened?
He reached under a running lawn mower to clear it and lost the fingers. I asked about his thumb. He did it again.

Reminds me of another Toyota auto parts story.
They made the countermen wear ties. Often we'd have to go out to the parking lot to look/listen to a customers car.
We always made it a point to tuck our ties into our shirts to prevent just that.

I just think of the warning label on a tube of Preparation H and cringe when I realized someone had applied it from the other end at least once.

I used to work at a large international company that had a very strict dress policy until one of the VP's got his tie caught in the shredder, he almost got his nose into the machine before his secretary shut it off.. and this guy makes over six figures... then golf shirts were the NEW proper attire.

That's why they make clip on ties.
