Cool Mark Wahlberg's Movie ''Shooter''

I think its a great movie, but do you really think you could drop a man at 200 yards with one shot from a .22 ? For those who have watched the movie you know what I am talking about.

Hi:
I am not sure that I could hit a barn or building at that distance.

I'd say anything is possible. But on the average, highly doubtful.

I really enjoyed that movie... I try to watch anything Mark Wahlberg is in. That being said, I bet if you planted a perfect headshot with the .22, it'd drop somebody...

Default Point of Impact

Shooter was based on the Steven Hunter book "Point of Impact" it is a great read as are all of Hunters books, the main character Bob Lee Swagger is based on a real life Marine sniper from V. Nam who came from the Geyer Springs area around Little Rock Ar. by the name of Carlos Hathcock who was a legend. Hunter is either a shooter or has friends that are because his firearms knowledge is very good. Jeff

Hunter is a shooter. For anyone who is into guns, Stephen Hunter's Bob Lee Swagger and Earl Swagger books are a must!

They're all great, but Pale Horse Coming blew me away!

Interesting . . . I grew up and lived in the Geyer Springs area of Southwest Little Rock until my late 20's and never knew Carlos Hathcock was from the same area.

I can do it with a .223, and it's .22 caliber. Did you mean .22 rimfire?

You have to more clearly define the question.

Do you mean could I make the shot with a .22 (rimfire?) at 200 yards? The answer to that is definitely yes with a rifle and with a high degree of probability with a .22 handgun.

Or is the question can a .22 be fatal at 200 yards? The answer to this is absolutely! Could a shot at that distance be immediately incapacitating? Again, absolutely, although the greatest probability is that it would not.

A short story, which is an actual event in which I took part in the investigation. A late middle-age man was entering a store in Salt Lake City when he was struck in the chest by a .22 bullet. He collapsed on the spot and died before the ambulance arrived. The bullet had been fired from a location which was never determined at considerable distance. The bullet was descending at nearly a 30 degree angle and richocheted off the face of the building he was entering before striking him. This was in no way deliberate, just an apparent accident caused by an unknown person firing a gun into the air in the middle of the day in the middle of a major metropolitan area. The shot was probably fired from nearly 1 mile away somewhere in the "Avenues" area of Salt Lake City.

Never underestimate what the .22 caliber is capable of or how dangerous it can be.

I go to about one movie a year,I waited eagerly for Shooter to open and went after work the day it did.I almost left.
I was expecting it to be at least loosely based on the book it was supposed to be based on but it wasn't.I don't think it would have been that good even if I wasn't compareing it to the book.

Standing in a boat? I can't hardly stand up in a boat to pee off the side, let alone think about accurately firing a rifle.

What I remember the most from that movie is the old Guru that gave him all the advice was Levon Helm, the former lead singer for "The Band". Man i love their music.

As previously stated, the 22LR can be quite lethal at that range. It can also be used effectively and with intent at that range, however the conditions have to be nearly perfect because the a 22 caliber bullet is light enough that wind and heat waves can have a significant effect on trajectory. Now, from a boat, over water, and with intent, only in a movie or by pure luck.

Red face

A gun club by me has 200yd rimfire matches every week. These guys shoot some very respectable groups. They use rifles like Rem 40X , Win Mod.52s , those CMP Kimbers. Even lighter stuff like Mossberg 44s and Savage 19NRAs does very well.

I wouldn't be flipping the bird at a Marine Sniper at 200yds if he ONLY had a .22.

All of the Stephen Hunter books are excellent, he is the one writer that gets his guns right.
The movie "Shooter" while based on "Point of Impact" differed quite a bit and really did not do it justice.
And yes, Hunter is a frequent shooter (almost daily) who loves guns. He's a nice guy too, have had the opportunity to talk to him in person several times.
His next Bob Lee Swagger book "I, Sniper" will be released after the first of the year.

I dare anyone of you to stick your head out at 200 meters while I take a shot with a .22.

I wanted to like the movie, but I also think it suffered in comparison to the book.

I couldn't get past the ridiculousness of the plot. Why fake an assassination attempt on the most protected man on the planet to kill an Ethiopian Archbishop who could have been bumped off in an alley during a fake robbery attempt?
