Default Best Defensive Load for Mdl 34

A buddy of mine has had his mother's house broken into three times in the last year, never while she is there. She has an alarm system w/cell phone BU, security doors and security bars on the windows. She wants a gun. We took her to the range last month and about the only thing she could handle was my Mdl 34-1 2" Blue RB. She shot it VERY well, almost scarry accurate with the little 22. Being that she is 79 YO, 4'10" and has arthritis in both hands a semi is out as she can't rack the slide and my Mdl 30 was too much recoil for her even when loaded with target load wadcutters. She has taken and passed the Tennessee HCP test and has sent off her paperwork awaiting her permit. I am going to lease her the Mdl 34-2 for $1.00 per year once she gets her permit in the mail. What is the best defensive load in 22LR out of a 2" Bbl?

I would use the CCI Velocitor. it is the highest velocity 40 grain load out there as far as I know

I have a taurus pt-22 that has a barrel that flips up to load easy. The ten shots of .22 is better than the 6 and its a nice size.

I got mine during the OJ trial before we had CCW permits. I use it for training classes occasionally when women or men have trouble with the .38's and it works for some.

A lot cheaper than a Smith too- beretta also makes one.

Stingers work as well for me

I would say anything super sonic.
The theif is the same one each time, And he relies on her not doing a thing, AND THE COWARD Picks on her because he feels that she cant hurt him in any way,,,
So the louder the better!
If it comes to shooting this punk, The punk will try and get away bleeding.
Lets face it, the .22 isnt going to do alot of damage unless it hits just the right spot,,, But the bang bang noise and the feeling of getting hit will put this coward down real fast ! ! ! !
Good for her and very nice of you! ! !

i would rather hit someone with a 22 than miss them with a 38, in this type situation, you are looking for penatration, so i would also sugest a faster ammo , but i would get it in a hollowpoint for its potential to mushroom and weight retention, and i would also teach her the best places to stop a predator with the 22

Aim for the eyes and shoot W-W Dynapoints.

Sometimes the nickle case of CCI Stingers will stick in Kitgun Cylinders.

Since you are leaseing her the .22, I wont bother talking about a .32 H&R mag. I had a close friend I used to work with that had done his career as a homicide LT. for indiapolis pd. He told me the .22 lr is one of the nastiest rounds to get hit with as usualy it rickoshays around the rib cage back and forth makeing soup of your guts! On the other hand, he told me a story of his partner getting hit with one but it knifed through him perfectly without hitting a rib. The doctory put bandades on the entrance and exit wounds and let him go!

Yes a .22 lr will kill but unless it's a eye socket or such into the brain it's not a timely stopper. This kind of accuracy under stress is all but impossible for the majority of us. Could I suggest a .38 special with wadcutter's for recoil control, I think this might be a better propisition.

Default Mod 34

Per the ideas above, get a box each of Velocitors, Stingers, and Mini-Mags. See what chambers and extracts perfectly.

Might see what does best in a gallon milk jug water-filled, and a few pine boards, once above fit is assured. Please do keep us posted.

Good of you to undertake this worthy project.

Thank you everyone for your input. I'm going to pick up some hyper velocity 22's and let her see what shoots best out of the 34 for her and does the most damage to some milk jugs and pine boards.

Peter, you are right, it is the same thug(s) breaking in each time. The SD has dusted the place for prints each time and came up with the same prints from BE #1 and 3, but the thug is not in the "System" yet. Same shoe print on back door from BE #1, 2 and 3, although 3rd door kick did not work due to her son & I replacing the door and frame with a steel frame/door combo with security hinges and two double deadbolt locks along with a deadbolt entry knob set. With where her house is located it's an average response time of about 13 minutes from the time the alarm company calls the SD, so the thug(s) probably have at least a 15 minute window before SD shows up.

TallPaul, we tried my Beretta 3032 Tomcat. She could handle the recoil but could not reload the magazine. She suggested something she could comfortably shoot and reload without having to thumb a shell out of the mag, place it in the chamber, push the barrel into battery and insert the magazine before firing. I know that the chances of her having to do a reload are slim to none but she wants to be able to DO a reload if she has too.

Thanks again everyone and Merry CHRISTmas

Good of you to help out an elderly person and thanks for doing so.

My FIL keeps that same gun with standard velocity solids for penetration on his bedside table at night since he got robbed strong arm in his own dining room from a neighborhood punk. Court date next month as they caught him on other thieft charges.
A couple weeks later while punk was still on the run likely he and friends kicked down the back door (reinforced steel now) but left when my FIL met them in the kitchen before they breached the door with his 686.
He's elderly but has been a gun guy his whole life. I'd like to get him here and do some shooting but my MIL is dying from lung cancer and he won't leave. (Likely they we looking fo her drugs and money)

I hate these punks that pray on the elderly and I always carry while visiting there but the punks won't dare when they see my truck there.
