Looking for a good value on a rail mounted laser. Want it to be one of the newer green style. This is going on a handgun with a picatinny rail, so overall length needs to be 4" or less.

Anybody have one or would suggest one they've had experience with?

Hey Giz, I have bought a few really cheap red ones for plinking and they stink so I was checking around to get a green laser and might be getting this one, although it is 4.76 inchs and might not fit your bill.

LOL, here is the link:

The "green" laser is the new politically correct laser, and is associated with the many "green" jobs created by the stimulus package.
The "red" laser on the other hand is associated with the "red" states which voted against the current administration.

I have tried cheap lasers with total dissatisfaction.

A good quality green laser is quite expensive though going down in price. I have been very happy with my red LaserMax on my 4566. It's about 2 1/8" long and only ¾" below the rail. I thought of the green but the MSRP is $399, MSRP for the red is $189.

I have a green laser bore sighter which is a great help to me when sighting in red dot sights. Looking at the green and red outside in overcast light the green is visible further but the red is more than adequate.

I have a green Lasermax on a Taurus PT1911AR stainless, it works fine, many people are not used to seeing green lasers at the gun club. It definately looks great when you turn the lighting down.

I had a recent bad experience with a cheap laser. I bought a UTG(Leapers) laser/flashlight at a show for $35.00. I figured that I couldn't get hurt to bad for $35.00. It worked when I left. The flashlight wouldn't turn on when I got home. I sent it back to Leapers who replaced a circuit board and returned it. So far so good. I no longer trust it though. I have since done some internet research and found that the quality control on the low end lasers and laser flashlights is horrible. A LOT of people have problems with most of the low end brands. I will likely end up spending the money on a name brand unit. These things have to be reliable since they are used on a home defense gun.

Green lasers are great... except they draw a straight line from your target to your location. (Only a problem of course if the target is a human.) In low light situations, the beam is seen in the air. Not just a dot on the target like the red lasers. The green can also be seen from greater distances from the red.

Now if you want to be super cool, spring for one of the blue lasers!(They are just real expensive......)

Another vote for the LaserMax, though it'll set you back about $350 retail. I got to play around with one and I think I have it in my future.

Here's the very applicable pic

CDNN Green Lasers

I have three from them.. two all green and one red/green. They are ~80 bucks IIRC, but they are solid and have worked well. One I use in lectures b/c you can see it a hell of a lot better than the wimpy red one furnished. The red/green one looks like a winner but I have not had it that long. The green ones do too good a job inside at night.Lights up the whole room.

Last year, Viridian and Ruger teamed up on a green laser for the SR9. It was at 50% regular cost, and they through in a Blackhawk! holster for the gun/laser combo as well. I couldn't resist the price. For what a Springfield XDm was going for I got the SR9, laser, and holster. Good deal.

I'm VERY happy with the weapon, but that isn't the topic of the post.

This gun/laser combo is now my nightstand gun. The green laser is extremely visible, even in broad daylight. it was easy to sight, and has four different modes of always on or a flash pattern. This adds greatly to the battery life, and gives some tactical advantages when working as part of a team. Not important to a homeowner probably.

The Viridian's biggest weakness is the terrible placement of the on/off switch. It is a pressure pad on either side of the laser unit. You know, right where pressure is applied by say, a holster. Idiotic. I don't carry mine since a coworker asked me about the green dot on the floor following me around.

However, for nightstand use it is ideal.

While my particular unit is specific to the SR9, Viridian makes dedicated units for S&W's and generic units as well. Just be aware of the incredibly stupid button position.
