i still use it but mainly just on .22 rimfires these days. There are better solvents for removing copper fouling or heavy plastic fouling from shotgun wads but when it's just a matter of running a few wet patches down a bore followed up by dry and then a little Break-Free for a preservative, good ol' No. 9 still does the trick. I especially like it with Bore Snakes on .22 pistols that I don't like to disassemble like a Ruger or Colt Woodsman. A cotton swab dipped in No. 9 to clean the breach face and chamber/extractor cut area and you're usually good. Plus like others, the smell brings back great memories.

It's aroma is among my most indellible memories from my earliest childhood, when my older siblings and father used it. I can smell it just thinking about it. Great stuff too, and when all said and done the best there is.

I use Hoppes #9 and a bunch of other gun cleaning solvents as well. I think it's still a great product and it's relativly cheap and works for most of my gun cleaning chores.

I have used it since the mid-fifties, and the fragrance does bring back many memories. I just wished it tasted and good as it smells.

The first time I cleaned a rifle 55 years ago, I used Hoppe's #9..
I cleaned a Smith & Wesson Nickle 4 inch, SB Model 10 this morning. Used Hoppe's #9 on it.

Good stuff.

I remember a test on cleaners by Cameron Hopkins in American Handgunner some years ago which matched my own experiences. IIRC he said nothing worked any better than another, but what was common to all was that they required lots of elbow grease.

For me, THE test for a cleaner was whether it removed leading and burn marks from stainless steel revolvers and the only product which worked was a lead remover cloth - think Birchwood Casey made it, but can't quite remember.

I always have hoppes #9 on the shelf, I make sure to get more before I run out, I always go for the 'BIG' bottle, which lasts a loooooooooooong time i learned to shoot at boy scout camp when I was 12 (fifteen years ago now), and I spent most of my time there at the rifle range every summer until i eventually worked there for 5 summers in a row, and became assistant-director of rifle and shotgun The director's cleaning methods were hoppes 9 solvent and hoppes lube, he taught me as a 12 year old attendee, and that's how we cleaned 'em there as a late-teens employee. it works great and I've never needed to use anything else in their place. The one thing I have changed as a gun owner, is I LOVE rem-oil, I usually spray all the dirty bits and bbl with it, let 'em sit for a half hour, and it makes the rest of the cleaning go MUCH faster after. Gotta love bore snakes too eh!? I used to use soooooo many patches, specially with my percussion guns.

+99 points for Hoppes Cologne, we've all though about it, but when does it hit the shelves!?!?!

For a while Hoppe's made an air freshener in the shape of a #9 bottle that you could hang in your gun room or anywhere you wanted the aroma of Hoppe's. If I remember they were kinda pricey, don't know if they survived.

I've uses Hoppes #9 over 40 + years, and the unique aroma drove three Ex-wives out of the room, on a real good day they left the house, every time I uncorked the bottle. Bro I'm sticking with a winner.

Ps. it also does a good job of cleaning your firearms as well.

Hoppes has been my primary gun cleaning solvent for over 32 years. Lately I've adopted Kroil to clean the lead out of .22 LR barrels and cylinders as the Kroil pops it right out! I lube with Birchwood-Casey Synthetic gun oil or Rem Oil with good old CLP as a stand-by.

I've found that Gunslick foaming bore cleaner works better after shooting moly coated black bullets tho...

I'll use whatever happens to be handy. Hoppes, Break Free, WD-40 (GASP), doesn't matter much.

As for the smell? It smells like Hoppes No 9. Nothing special about it to me. It's not good. It's not bad. It's just Hoppes.

Use #9 after every use, love the smell too. Not sure about the cologne thing, my wife sends me outside. Now that I think about it, it might sell.

I still use it for bore and chamber cleaning plus after shave cologne.
S&W doesn't not recommend it on the "J" frame stainless steel airweights. Something about it bad on the clearcote finish.

Been using it for over 45 years on all my guns and I still have several rifles, revolvers and shotguns that are in great shape. Don't see any reason to change now.

I buy it by the quart, wish they made an air freshner that you could hang in the truck.
