It's ok to cry pet lovers...
LAST NIGHT
I stood by your bed last night; I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying you found it hard to sleep.
I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
"It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."
I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today; your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.
I was with you at my grave today; you tend it with such care.
I want to re-assure you, that I'm not lying there.
I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you; I smiled and said, "it's me."
You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.
It's possible for me, to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."
You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew...
in the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.
The day is over... I smile and watch you yawning
and say "good-night, God bless, I'll see you in the morning."
And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.
I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out...then come home to be with me.

I recall Lewis Grizzard commenting on the fact that Roy Rogers had Trigger stuffed. Grizzard said Dale Evans better hope that Roy died before she did.

It had an effect on me. We lost our 14 year old Brittany just before Christmas.
It's like losing a child.

Dogs Are The Best
It didn't make me cry but I liked it. I had a stroke 7 years ago and wound up disabled at home by myself. My co-workers soon stopped calling and coming by. My friends dwindled to one person. My extended family stopped calling...but my dogs never abandoned me and were always happy to see me and let me know that. I still spend most of my days in the company of two dogs...I prefer them to most humans.

My beloved dog Bucky died last April. It was our habit to share a cup of coffee each morning. I like it with sweetener and milk; so did he. I'd drink most of the cup, but leave a little for him, and he'd wait by my side to lap it up while I held the cup for him.
These mornings, I still leave a little at the bottom of the cup, and I do feel he's there, saying "Thanks for remembering, Dad." He will always be in my heart, and if God allows, someday I will see him again.
Thanks for posting, Sip.

Ditto how I feel for my little guy "Ike." He's my one in a million, dog of a lifetime. My daughter-in-law calls him the "Human Dog" . . . but Ike is all dog! Humans generally lack the all the complex, intuitive, caring traits Ike has . . .

I still think "Ol' Yeller'" was a communist plot!
Thanks Sip, copied and sent to Wife (who though she hates to admit it, is just as squishy as I am about it).

Tom Turner, beautiful picture! It's easy to see all the love in those eyes, both yours and Ike's. Not sure which of you has the bigger smile though!

I had a cat for 18 years. Bob went with me to Portugal, Virginia, Jacksonville, Tulsa, back to Jax and then he retired to south Florida.
I had him stuffed, curled up like he's still sleeping.
Every once in a while, I'd put him on the sofa so he could enjoy the company of visitors. He was a loyal door stop for many years.
He was still looking pretty good until a few years ago. One of my Chihuahuas chewed Bobs ear off. I finally buried him after one of my other dogs peed on him. He had some great times while he was alive and he had some more after he died.
He's currently resting in the mountains of eastern Tennessee and in my mind.

Ya got me.
We have a new best buddy, but we still miss our old pal Felix. He was abused then rescued by the Humane Society - some douchenozzle threw him off an overpass into traffic on Hwy 1. He was a puppy, one of 10 in a bag. Only one died and Felix was the last to be selected - by us.
He was never normal, always on the outside looking in, sort of like an indepent contractor or roommate, but he loved us and we loved him.
No better a watchdog in the world. Loved to hunt and I personally saw him tear up a couple large raccoons. He was a 70 pound doberman sheppard. My sister had a wolf @ 100lbs and Felix took him on and whooped his *** twice - I watched.
Loved small children and babies, absolutely loved them. Scared the **** out of their Mom's, but he'd hover around these kids and God forbid you have harmful intent.
The most gentle and loving friend you could know. He preferred to sleep in the front room so he could keep watch on the street and keep us safe.
He'd watch my wife garden and get preoccupied and he'd wait. When the time was right, he'd catch her eye and do a devil dog attack feint and she'd be frightened and shriek. Just as soon as she'd yell out, he'd take on an "awww shucks" posture and I'd swear a dog style laugh and a twinkle in his eye. You can not tell me dogs don't have a sense of humor.
Someday we'll all meet up again. If there is a Heaven, its surely home to our friends.

I know most of you are thinking about dogs...
I was stunned when I lost my beloved horse, Nick... companion & fellow re-enactor... a few short years ago.
He made it look so easy.
He had a totally unexpected bad reaction to his Spring shots... died 4 days later despite all efforts to save him. He was 28 and we'd been togther for 24 years.
I remain heart broken.
Russ
PS I pointed out to my dear wife, that Nick & I had been together more years that we'd been a couple... in fact it was Nick that brought us together.

I've already decided that when Sadie dies, she will be cremated and when I die, our ashes are to be mixed together. Charlie can come along too, if he wants.

Sure brought a tear to my eye.
Reminded of ol Blue, a German short hair we had when I was a kid.
I've had a lot of good dogs since olBlue.
But without a doubt he was the best dog we ever ate.

Flagman, I'm sorry for your loss. I've never been around horses much but to lose a 24 year companion so unexpectedly would be a heartbreaker. I love my dogs and will have a pack of them waiting for me at the bridge.

He's waiting with others I've had.One day we're gonna have a dog gone kick butt party together and its gonna be allright again.

Even the worst dogs and cats deserve better poetry than that. The best ones will roll their eyes and forgive it.
No trouble with the sentiment; just the execution.

Thanks,
Ol' Ike is a sport. Ike is for "Isaac," which in the Bible means "His Laughter," and this fits "Ike" to a "T!" He's so spunky, fiesty and oh so sweet too. In other words . . . LOTS of personality.
He can amuse himself with simple pleasures . . . Last summer he chased seagulls at the beach . . . had a faceoff with a large fiddler crab (who eventually escaped into the surf) . . . and even saved a baby hatchling Sea Turtle that was heading inland. Ike barked and called me to it.
Yep . . . he's a sweety . . . and when I'm working late, he becomes the Alpha Male for sure.
Great dogs are truly a blessing!!!
He was the largest, strongest and most curious of his litter of purebred Boston Terriers, and although his facial markings were not "perfect," he was perfect in our hearts . . .
SEVEN WEEKS . . .
Last summer, age four . . .
The only thing WRONG about dogs . . . is that they don't live long enough!!!
I hope to have this strong one around for a very, very long time indeed.
Tom

Some folks are just wired differently...
I've lost two labs, an older one and a young one, not easier for me to think about them without misting up. My present one will be twelve in April. I know that I face a tough time sooner that I'd like.
I like the thought of Mark Twain(I think it was from him)..."If there are no dogs in heaven, I want to go where they went." Preston

Not perfect? He is absolutley adorable! I love Bostons (I love all dogs!), but I've never met anyone who owned one since my great grandmother. He is beautiful Tom! I wish you both a long, happy, and healthy life together!

Molly 5, and Angel 10. I got Molly when she was a year old, and adopted Angel from a Doxie rescue about 14 months ago. They are both gifts from God.

We have a Boston Terrier in our family, too. This is Tige (named after the dog in Buster Brown's shoe, for those of you old enough to remember). Here, he is in his relaxed recumbent pose. He's an old dog, now, at 12, but has scored 5 roof rats in our back yard over the last year!

It got to me and I ain't afraid to admit it.
I've had dogs, cats, horses, sheep, chickens, and an occasional skunk.
I shot the skunks.
