22 LR recommendation(s)
Been 40 years since I owned a 22 LR worth expecting groups from. That was a Marlin lever action. My 22's are all beaters/boat/truck guns. I loaded up 600 243's over the past 3 days with 38.5 grains of 4064 and Speer 85 grain BTSP. These rounds are under 1/2" for 3 shot groups......but expensive, time consuming and I have to travel to my "range" to shoot them. A 22 I can shoot here in the back yard and not disturb anyone that doesn't already disturb me.
I've got scopes already, but will need a good set of rings/mounts.
Looking/asking for your recommendations. Anyone have a Henry from Wal-Mart?
Thanks in advance...

I was just looking thru a Cabelas Shooting cataloge and there are quite a few bells and whistles made for this gun. I know that's what they shoot at all the matches, but you can put a grand into one of these guns in just a few minutes. Wouldn't mind having a thumbhole stock for one, but I shoot left handed and haven't seen one yet. Any leads on one Sip?
tks,
Lee

I belive the CZ 452 to be by far the best bang for the buck in a .22lr. It comes in a wide variety of flavors from the Varmint to the Lux. To get a rifle that out performs a CZ 452 you will have to spend twice the money and step up to an Anschutz or Cooper. For a few dollars more the CZ 453 has a single set trigger.
CZ-USA -> Product Categories
I had a 452 trainer that was dead nutz accurate and only sold it because I fell on hard times.

Accurate and cheap: Savage bolt action. Can be had used in the local shops in the $100 range and shoot as well or better than anything else out there.

I am loving the price and the outstanding accuracy of my Savage MK II FVT bolt action. If its rapid fire, multiple round plinking pleasure that you seek, get the 10-22. You can get one cheap, and add whatever you want to it over time to customize it.

10/22
I have two 10/22s with varying amounts of Ruger pasts, and one that looks like a 10/22 (KIDD) but has no Ruger parts except the magazine. You can put $$$ into one, or shoot it as is, I have never handled a stock 10/22 with a decent trigger, but plenty of people will rework the trigger for $100 or less. KIDD makes a very fine two stage trigger equal to any European Target Rifle (not admittedly for $100).
There are many aftermarket trigger groups, barrels, stocks, etc, available at reasonable prices as well as high end stuff.
My advice, buy a used 10/22, have the trigger reworked then you can go further if you like. A tapped receiver that you can put a Weaver rail on is nice while you are looking. The basic rifle comes apart with few tools and it is very easy to do your own work.

You can't go wrong with a Marlin 25 or 60. If your looking for lots of fun, consider a Ruger SR-22. YouTube - Ruger SR-22

CZ 452! I have 3 of them a Full stock, a Varmint and a Lux.
All of them right out of the box will shoot 50 yard groups that can easily be covered by a dime and give you some change back.

I have a 30+ year old 10/22. I put a wolf spring kit in it, a Green Mountain bull barrel and a stock to fit the barrel, and High power scope. I can put 10 shots into an inch at 100yds with it from a rest. It is very easy to swap barrels, just take out a screw swap barrels, put the screw back and you are good to go.
I also have a Henry Golden Boy that has an action like glass.
Each is fun in its own way.
For handguns, I have a 6" model 17 and a model 41 made in 1959. What more could you want?

I have a 10/22, a Browning auto and a Kimber bolt action. Enjoy shooting all three. Just ordered a new Sig 522 for the high magazine capacity and also the anticipated fun factor.
I find myself shooting my .22 rifles and handguns more than I used to, they're both fun and cheap to shoot.
BTW, my favorite handgun is my model 41.

Ruger 10/22 or Henry's are both good guns for a decent price.

22LR platforms
You have received some superb thoughts here. For fun plinking at up to 50 yards, perhaps using no bench rest, a Ruger 10-22 is wonderful and maybe 1" accurate with ammo it likes. [They all shoot a little differently as to accuracy, and this is shooter-dependent, too.] A Marlin Model 60 is also good, if you keep the chamber and bolt area pretty clean with a couple Q-tips every hundred or so rounds.
In a bolt-action, the CZ 452 reigns for performance/value. At $100 or so level, a used Marlin 25 is a good bet, as is Savage.
In a lever action, the Marlin 39 is the standard, with many enjoying the Henry, too.
Overall, from your question, I would think a 10-22.
Let us know your decision!
Regards,
Dyson

There are some nice 22s out there with some good suggestions I have a Marlin lever 39A and a Ruger 10/22, both are nice shooters.
When I want detailed 22 advice there are a great group of guys on the rimfirecentral forum with a forum for most every 22 gun maker. When you have narrowed your choice you may want to ask additional questions on the other forum.

I have several types of the .22lr rifles
I have 10/22 in stock and "upgraded" and like them alot
I have a cz trainer and Luv it! It is an amazing little gun. I put a "Brooks" Peep sight on it and just recently sighted it in with the new sight. I took it to a buds farm and when we were scouting for deer and general woods walking we stopped about 135 yards from his pumpkin patch when he said try to hit that pumpkin in the fielkd that did not get harvested... 3 shots and I could have sworn I heard it hit but he said I was iver so I went one click down and shot 3 more... when we got there there were two "groups" on that pumpkin- one at the top and ond almost centered ... I was impressed to say the least.
I bought mine a few years back when I made the mistake of hanging out at RFC Home
I have a few other .22s a weatherby a remington 40x and a few marling models 25/80 that work and work well but the cz is a shining star in the group and I would like a few more cz's although a dedicated AR in .22 is on my list also...

If you want the rimfire equivalent of an AR, get a 10/22 and tart it up however you like. You can take 'em out of the box and use them for tin cans and plinking, or spend a few hundred more and really have a shooter.
If you are shooting for groups, a CZ, Anschutz, or (my preference) a Savage is the way to go. I have a Mk II BTVS (stainless, heavy barrel, laminate thumbhole stock) that will chew up targets like no one's business.

I have a Ruger 77/22, which is accurate, and has an ok but not fantastic trigger. My only real gripes is the rear sight isn't too good, and the stock feels a little short for me. A scope fixes the problem with the poor sight.
I've had it since the mid-80's, and eventually wore out the extractor in the bolt. Ruger sent me a new bolt, no charge.
