A Philosophical Convert!
Charlie's very good old friends and their two children suprised us with a visit yesterday. We hadn't seen them in two years. At their last visit, the presidential primaries were in full swing and the wife was a die-hard Hillary fan. She's adamant in her opinions, and is the overprotective type to avoid milk for the kids (creates phlegm), won't have a woodburning stove (kids might get burned), won't wear makeup or color her hair (cancer), etc. We didn't plague her with political talk or emails because there was no point and we certainly weren't going to ruin a friendship over opinions.
Anyway, yesterday they came over WITH dinner and it was great to see them. Nearing the end of dinner, she pipes up with "So what do you think of Sara Palin?" I said nothing, and Charlie gingerly said, "I don't think she can be a winning candidate." She said, "I LOVE her! I think she's great!"
A bit later, I wanted to show the husband the old Colt but was afraid the wife would freak out, so I said to Charlie, "Do you think they'd want to see the antique your uncle gave us?"
I brought up the old Colt and he oohed and ahhed over it and the wife says, "I want a gun I can carry."
Well, they came to the right place! I kept bringing stuff up out of the safe until the table was covered with everything from the KelTec P32 to the range rifle, as well as assorted ammunition so they could see the difference in real life of what the different calibers are. She really liked the 60LS with laser sights, but the husband was more of a 65LS man. They had a blast "shopping" through the assortment!
The husband said, "Why all the Smith & Wessons? What is it about them that you like?" I said, "They have great quality for the money." The wife said, "I want a gun to protect myself with and in today's climate, I'm not sure if in the future I'll be able to get one."
I showed them my carry permits and explained how to get one, and also told them about PA open carry (they are residents). So, they are on their way to joining our ranks. I think I'll sign them up to the NRA as a return surprise.
One just never knows what the day will bring.

Congratulations!
From Hillary to Palin in two years?
What did she bring for dinner, humble pie?

I didn't know which shocked me more - the Palin part or her wanting a carry gun when she's opposed to anything that might cause injury.

If you are old enough to recall, Bill Clinton was almost as good a gun salesman as BarackO. I guess liberal politicians are good for something after all.

I heard it said that the best way to turn an anti-gunner into a pro-gunner is to steal their money, and threaten them. Thanks Mr. President.

Barb, perhaps you planted the seed a long time ago, and it finally has germinated. May have been you had as much to do with her conversion as the present circumstances.

Sounds like you ruint them. Congradulations! In my case I dont know if I EVER had a liberal friend! Its one of those deals I never could see how any democrat ever got elected going by my aquaintances. AND I done my career in supposedly liberal california. We retired here in utah and new friends were amazed to find out we were republicans because we were from california?

Great work Barb, one couple at a time, hopefully their new found freedom will rub-off in their circle.
Once that they start to take self-defense in their own hands, they may come to realize that their responsibility for themselves may not end with self-defense.
The old axiom still applies; a conservative is a liberal mugged by reality. I think there is a lot of “reality mugging” going on out there right now.

It sounds as though delayed a bit, the Lady has finally managed to become "all grown up"? Helped in no small part by you and your husband Barb! Fortuitous, you having your collection for her to paw over.
I think Smith and Wesson's "salesman of the year" has been so effective, he even managed to accomplished a sale on Charlie's old friend's Wife!
Now THAT, is salesmanship!

Barb - I find more and more people who never even considered owning a gun are joining our ranks. Obama has spooked a lot of them, and I think the NRA and other pro-gun groups have been doing a pretty good PR job in the last few years. Good trend. I'm glad your friends have seen the light and that you encouraged them!

Irving Kristol defined a neo-conservative as "a liberal who has been mugged by reality." I have found that taking a bath in the Cold Waters of Reality wakes a lot of people up PDQ.

If you be nice (in my case a gentleman) to liberals it screws 'em all up. They describe us as " mean spirited". If you smile and play nice they don't know what to do. Good job, now lets hope they vote appropriately.
