Default Was you ever bit by a dead bee?

PBS is running To Have and Have Not tonight and it always just cracks me up when Walter Brennen asks that question. Bogey and Bacall are also a great pairing, plus Laren Bacall was some very serious eye candy back in the day.

Don't know nuthin' about the movie, but I know about getting hit by a bumble bee. Right smack in the forehead, I was doing about 80 mph.

I thought it was gonna knock me off the back of my scooter.

I had a near miss by a locust doing 50 mph on my mountain bike downhill. LOL Good thing I have catlike reflexes.

That's my favorite Bogey movie. Brennan was great. Bacall was a real knockout. You know how to whistle don'tcha?
Hoagy Carmichael added some class and Bogey was Bogey. Great stuff.

I HAVE BEEN BIT BY A DEAD BEE!!
When I was about 10 yrs old I was in a swimming pool, dead bee was floating nearby, Went to pick it up to get it out of the pool. Apparently when I applied pressure it caused the stinger to extend, my finger was in the downrange direction. OUCH!!

Interesting how many have been stung while riding. I once got hit by a wasp while riding a Honda CB450. When it happened it felt like I had been shot with a 22 and left a bruise from knee to hip. Almost would have thought it was a rock kicked up by a passing car but there was no other traffic present and no trees over the road, so it wasn't a walnut. Years later I told my Doctor about it and he handed me 3 Epi packs, one for the car, one for the bike, and one for the boat. Apparently, a large bruise resulting from a bee or wasp sting is a symptom of a developing allergic sensitivity.

As for Bogey and Bacall, they are hard to top IMO. My two favorite movies are "To Have and Have Not" and "Key Largo". Both which oddly enough feature boats in addition to the superb pairing of Bogey and Bacall. They also illustrate what is so lacking in today's movies, which is simply superb writing and character development. I for one would just love to know how that line "was you ever bit by a dead bee" came about, it cracks me up every single time and it just fits so perfectly with the character that Brennen portrayed in this movie.

Yup... Got a glancing blow off my cheek by a bumble bee while on my BSA. That bugger got lodged under my collar and was stinging the weewee out of me on my neck.

I almost dismounted at 40 mph before I could get stopped and pull him off.

A real pain in the neck!

Ahhhhhhh - A bee n wasp thread...

1969 - I was home on leave and riding a BSA Rocket 3 when something went past my glasses and into my eye. I then dug a wasp out of my right eye - I remember that episode like it happened this morning! The edge of the glasses must have killed it instantly, or I would probably still be dealing with the results.

Last year - I was washing our house siding and wiping drops of water off when I *discovered* THE wasp nest. First my left hand was covered with stinging critters, so I slung them off -- That seemed to crank up everyone in the nest and by the time I could get off the ladder I had well over 20 stings... Now I look carefully before working on anything where there may be a nest.

Ice seems to take the sting away the quickest, btw.

"That means one of you is going to take a beating for nothing, and I don't care which one it is."

There's a story in Hollywood that Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner were playing golf and got to arguing about books vs. film. Faulkner made Hemingway a bet that he could make a brilliant screenplay from Hemingway's worst novel. Hence "To Have and Have Not." Most people think Faulkner won that bet hands down.

Bees: Running barefoot when I was 10 years old I stepped on a walking bee, which caused pretty instant pain and had me out of commission for a couple of days. Bee sting on the sole of the foot: not good. I know how to avoid bees on flowers or in the air. If they are walking on hard surfaces, I give them a wide berth. You can't negotiate with a walking bee. They have no judgment.

I carry an Epipen all the time. Didn't use to be that sensitive, but about 15 years ago I got a bee sting on my wrist while I was working outside in cold weather. When I stripped off the jacket and shirt later, my whole arm and right side were swollen from shoulder to hip. Definitely a learning moment.

I have spiders in my garden that are big enough to wrap up a bee or wasp. No arachnophobia for me; those guys are my friends.

I haven't been bit by a dead bee, but I have been bit by several that were dead very shortly thereafter.

As a kid I was yelling and running toward a dog's dish full of something that attracted bees. One flew out of the dish and into my mouth, stinging me on the cheek. It hurt quite a bit, but was also the quickest- healing sting I ever got.

Dead bees do sting! Driving with the window down i heard that distinctive " clink" of something hitting my side view mirror followed by a sharp pain on the base of my neck. And there he was in my lap dead as can be, hurt as much as a live one.

Several years ago I was driving my truck with my arm out the window and my hand propped on the rearview mirror. I had on a long sleeved shirt with the cuff turned back a couple of times. A hornet flew into my shirt sleeve and stung me in the soft part of my elbow 5 times before I could get the truck stopped and get him out.

I've been stung by just about every kind of wasp and bee there is, but NOTHING ever hurt as bad as that hornet.

She was born in '24 and they filmed it in '44 so she was 20. Looked good as 'slim' and she knew how to whistle.

I'd rather run into a snake than any flying monster.
I was washing my car a few years ago and knocked a hornet out of the air. Then I stepped on him a little while later.
Didn't finish the car that day.

A dead bee can bite you just as bad as a live one, 'specially if he was mad when he got killed.

Coincidentally I turned on the TV last night and To Have & Have Not was playing, and it was two sentences before she said it the first time.

"To Have and to Have Not" is a good movie, but I prefer "The Big Sleep". How the movie was actually made is a fascinating story in itself, since it was partially completed, then basically scrapped in mid-stream and redone. There's a great Turner documentary about it which compares the original and final versions. And of course, Loren Bacall is hot in it!

Wait until you take your DA nephew out during spring squirrel season and he mistakes a bald face hornet nest for a bushytail rat and shoots it with a 12 gauge. Too bad for him that I run faster than he does. I ONLY got hit once, he got hit about ten times. Worst sting I've ever had. Still have the scar on the back of my right hand, it's been there for more than twenty years.

Must be something about bikes and rear view mirrors.

My wife and I were going to the Outer Banks of North Carolina years ago, when I heard something smack the outside mirror of my Ford Bronco. Then I felt the pain. A bee or some kind (I didn't take the time for a formal introduction) hit the mirror and bounced inside the truck, and landed on the seat, in the "V" of my legs, and stung me about three times.

Let me tell you boys and girls there was Ford Bronco all over the road there for a few seconds. You ever try to (1) drive, (2) hold your butt up off the seat, (3) get a really annoyed bee out of your crotch, while (4) using the clutch and brake pedals, all at the same time.

When I was a kid I was drinking a Nehi Orange one hot summer day when all of a sudden, I felt my lips getting HUGE! I looked in the bottle and there was a dead bee floating on top of the drink. The guys I was with were scared and ran, so I had to drive myself to the local hospital for treatment. I remember getting to the hospital, parking the car and walking inside the ER and that was it. I was told that was a close call. Oddly, I've never had another allergic reaction to a bee or other insect sting since then. That includes being stung about three times by a scorpion a few weeks ago - that wasn't any fun either.

Regards,

Dave

OMG... We keep getting bark scorpians in the house lately. I keep telling her I'm going to burn the earth to make sure I get them all and just rebuild. I can't stand those things. Maybe I watched Clash of the Titans too many times as a kid.

The last time I got stung, I was fast enough to get my ring off
within minutes. Any longer, and it would have had to be removed with the "jaws of Life". My poor hand must have gotten as big as a melon!
Since then, all stinging insects in my vicinity are on "borrowed time".
It's all out war until the critter is dead or retreats. TACC1

I was stung by a dead bee when I was a kid. I was cleaning up dead bee bodies in the window sill with a Kleenex. The stinger went through and got me good. I couldn't believe it.

My oldest bro and I have always been highly allergic to bee stings. However, I was stung recently and didn't swell up. Turns out when you get OLD, you become less sensitive. That's the only good news I know on aging.

Actually a .22 Hornet or a .218 Bee would be more appropriate.

Per the movie: Lauren was luscious and Walter Brennan was one of our most likeable character actors. As someone else mentioned, Bogie was Bogie, and that's a good thing.

One Great Movie. One of my favorites, but anything Bogart and Bacall did together, I liked.

Either will do. You don't have to kill them all. Just identify a ringleader and make an example of him.

I've been stung by a dead bee. Someone had killed it and left it lying on a window seal just for me to bump into.

Sooner a dead bee stinging me than some of their kin we have here. The Tarantula Hawk has a sting rated North of Fire and Bullet Ant stings. After that we have Scarab Hunter wasps, Cicada Killers and MANY species of Cricket Hunter, and they are all packing big time. I have photos if you want to see. The good news is that they largely ignore people and provided you approach without waving your arms and yelling, you can get some very close in pictures.

Yeras ago when I lived in the mountains of Georgia, I was out one day working on our road, when I heard what sounded like an old flat bed truck with bald tires "singing" down the highway. The problem was that there was no highway-or hard paved road near enough to hear that sound. As I looked around, I noticed a small tree about 30 feet tall having its' top foliage completely surounded and covered by a swarm of the largest bees I have ever seen. They were huge. You could make out the bodies of individual bees from 75-100 feet away. This was in a very steep place, and I was above them. It was awesome, and so alarming that I got a clear signal from my bodys chemical factory to "Flee." And that's just what I did. Bees can be bad, hornets are deadly. Flapjack.
