Why does Pachmayr put that horrible gold medallion on its grips?

I have never been able to figure this out. Do they think it looks good? It doesn't! It's sort of like taking a nice classic car and painting it purple and putting gold rims on it. The older Pachmayrs without the logo look so much better, not that they were ever that attractive to begin with..

Why does Browning gold plate their triggers?
Why did Pontiac make so many of their later models look like pimpmobiles? No wonder the mark is discontinued.

Is it their bad taste or are they marketing to people with bad taste?

I rather like the medallion, although most of my Pachmayrs don't have it.

I also liked the gold S&W medallions on their old revolvers.
Even the silver ones enhance the gun, make it look more complete.

I do think that Puma has had some fairly garish lettering on some of their knife blades. And some of the mottos, etc. on old Bowie blades were really over the top.

I recently bought a Model 65-3 3" RB S&W and wanted a pair of Pachmayr Compac grips for it. The new ones with the medallion had the advantage of being molded in one piece, i.e. the rear part that covers the grip strap is solid and you pry the two sides open like a clam and wiggle the grips into place. That means no annoying seam in the palm of your hand. The bad news is that they no longer have a blind screw escutcheon on the left side and they have those hideous medallions. I ended up paying almost as much for an older 2 piece/non medallion set as the new ones go for, and have to live with the minor gap/uneven rear seam.

I agree with you 33, they look bad. I will not own a pair with them in it, and the ones made without the gaudy metal are hard to find. However, I was told by someone whose opinion I trust that they are the same size as the Colt medallion, so they can be switched out. Does not help us S&W guys though...

My grips on my 65-4 are the ones with the medallion. Anything I put on that gun looks great. The gun makes them look fine. I could wrap the grip frame with duct tape and it would look fine.(not really) but they are the ones that are one piece that cover the back strap. I do wish that they were the S&W medallions though.
Peace,

Found this while searching for "Pachmayr Compacs with S&W medallions." They apparently don't exist, but I wanted to answer the OP's question, since no one did. Anyway, they put those medallions on their grips because it's their medallion, and their grips. Just like Smith puts its medallions on its grips. I don't especially like them either, and they were shrewd enough to make them larger than S&W meds, so you can't just pop 'em out and replace them, but the bottom line is, they put their brand on their product, and that's to be expected. Isn't it?

Funny how S&W (and Colt) guys want to uni-brand their guns -- don't get me wrong, I do too. I want S&W meds on my S&W, damn it. Jump into ARs and it's a different story. Those sport accessories representing multiple brands, clearly and proudly marked. Even Glocks get accessorized, and that's not easy. I guess it's just us.

Well,I like 'em better than those shirts with the little alligators...

Hey now! What do you have against those alligator shirts, anyway? I have a couple of those, somewhere. But my favorite one of that type is from Disneyland/world/whatever and has a Mickey Mouse emblem instead of the alligator. I usually wear it whenever big shots are visiting. Always makes me feel better.

I am with the OP. I dislike the cheap-looking medallion, too, but you can hardly make a set of Pachmayr grips look worse, so, I guess bottom-line, FT is right - it doesn't make much difference. :D

If I am going to advertise someones product by wearing their cap or shirt they better give it to me!

Very subjective! You can sort of make the same statement (question) on just about anything. Just saying............

they did their job well IMHO..
if you want someone to remember your product, do something they will NOT forget...

I don't mind the medallions on my Pachmyars that are on my Browning Hi Power, but I consider the Wilson Combat medallions on my 45acp 1911 as a middle finger irritant; so much that I had to change grips to an all checkered G-10 laminate.

Advertisement would be my guess. The only rubber grips I have at the moment are on my BFR 45/70 revolver and a 357 snubby. I did have a set of Pachs on a Contender 45/70 that weighed about 2 lbs. for obvious reasons!

it's only "brand recognition" and so one can tell them apart from Uncle Mikes, Hogues and all the other makers of rubber baby buggy bumpers.....
just make sure you grease or oil your gun UNDER them grips or the grip frame will rust up!!!!

I actually like the Compaq ones on some guns (some of the time.) I have a set on my 642 and on my 627-PC.

I don't like the medallions either. The rubber ain't the best looking and win no beauty contests. But for the guns I use a lot I like the Pachmayr Compaqs just fine.

These one piece grips are for a k-frame but work great on a round butt N.
