Go see "Knight & Day" -- a great action flick!
Forget the doom and gloom of the news outlets reporting "Knight & Day" is a flop. Forget whether you think Tom Cruise is a Scientologist nut job. This is mindless, fun, summertime entertainment at its best.
This is a great, fast-paced action flick with the perfect blend of action, suspense, witty/funny dialog, and romance. The script is very well written and the humor is particularly entertaining. The car crashes are very well done CGI, as are the bulls in a "running of the bulls" segment in Sevilla, Spain during the chase scene. (They do NOT run bulls in Sevilla on The Festival of San Fermin, but it made for good action.) If you're able to suspend belief at a couple points in the movie, it is worth the price of admission for a great action flick.
Definitely two thumbs up.
Noah

The wife and I saw it yesterday. We did enjoy it. Funny and with lots of action. Had a coupon for free popcorn to, yummy.
Not a Tom fan but he does make some good movies.

Noah,
The differences among human beings are fascinating to me. I recall a thread here last fall, I believe, about college football. You posted at the time that you regarded watching televised sports as a waste of time, and recommended alternative activities such as reading, working in the garage, etc.
I feel virtually the same way about movies. Though on the intellectual level I can appreciate the qualities you speak about in relation to this film, I must respectfully pass on your recommendation. I haven't been to the cinema since 1982, and likely will never do so the rest of my days. The dramatic art simply has no appeal to me, and so I would feel that I had wasted valuable time if I went to see this or any other film.
On the other hand, I am highly entertained by skilled college-level football players struggling to prevail against one another in a close, hard-fought contest.
I hope you take these words as I intend them; I just find it interesting that one person recommends one form of entertainment and disdains another, and a second person does just the opposite.
But to avoid taking your thread in a direction you didn't intend, let me say that I'm glad you found an enjoyable means of relaxation. I'm sure that the professionals who put the film together did a very fine job at what they do. Many here will see the film at your recommendation, and they will enjoy themselves too. And that's a good thing.
I always like reading your posts, Noah. Keep them coming as you're able.
Andy

Tom Cruise-Oprah's couch-can't watch him anymore. It is a shame because I enjoyed some of his earlier stuff.

Andy:
We're more alike than you think, Andy. "Knight and Day" was the only movie I've watched since the 4th Indiana Jones movie came out two years ago, and I hadn't stepped into a theater since the late 80s.
The "other half of the story:" The draw for us to go see "Knight & Day" was the footage shot in Sevilla, Spain. My daughter studied abroad there last summer for seven weeks, taking Advanced Spanish II and Spanish for the Medical Profession. We met up with her in Sevilla at the end of her stay and spent three great (but HOT) days there seeing the sights and eating excellent cuisine, before flying off to Germany, Luxembourg, France, and Italy for the following two weeks. But that's a different post.
In the tourist trap souvenir shops in Sevilla they sell T-shirts with the artwork: E=MC^2 and beneath that: "Espana = Mucho Calor" (Spain = Much Heat). Let me tell you, I totally understand the point of "siesta." No one in their right mind should be out when the temperature is 45C - 49C. You look up the conversion.
So when we saw the trailers on TV showing the Cathedral, the modern trolleys crossing each other in front of City Hall on Avenue de la Constitucion, the narrow streets, the colorful buildings, and the bull ring, it was enough incentive to go to the Cineplex.
And it just happened to be a surprisingly entertaining movie.
Best,
Noah

I can't tolerate either Tom Cruise or Cameron Diaz, and I refuse to have any of my money lining their pockets.
I guess I'm just getting old and ornery, but I find myself disliking more and more of today's actors and other celebrities. They're just a bunch of pretty idiots (okay, some of them are nasty looking idiots), and too many of them feel that their fame and fortune somehow makes their opinions on political and social issues more valid than ours.

Knight and Day
This thread has drifted sufficiently for me to not feel bad about commenting on movies in general. I have found that I rarely enjoy films anymore. This is quite a change, in 1975-77 I probably averaged 45 films a year enjoying the great majority. Today I haven't been to the cinema 8 times in the past 3 years & generally left wishing I hadn't attended. I suspect this is more a question of my tastes changing than the quality of the films?

Noah,
Yes, sir; I can certainly understand the draw for you.
I found an online temperature conversion site by the National Weather Service and discovered that your figures converted to 113 - 120 degrees F. Hope the building you were in had good AC.

Quick question concerning movies. Sometime back somebody recommended a Michael Caine film. I think the name was " Harry Brown" I have been a fan of his since he was basically a unknown when he played the English Lt. in ZULU. Has anybody have any knowledge about this new Caine movie? If so please post......Thanks

Google is your friend: Harry Brown Movie
As to Knight and Day, my wife, daughter, and I loved it. Great movie! Very fun, funny, and exciting.
One question about Knight and Day though, why in the world is it named that? I understand that Cruise's character's real last name was Knight, but Diaz's character's name wasn't Day. Where did Day come from?

I don't really care to go to the movies. Most of the movies that seem to be there are not my type-though my wife likes what we used to call (I still do) Chick Flicks or Chic Flics.
I don't much like the crowds there. I don't like sitting next to some person who hasn't bathed or who had done so in perfume.
When we go, which is once every five or six years, we go to the first PM Matinee. Less crowded, soothes my minor quirks, I guess.
I also don't like many of the actors and don't want to offer any of my money to support those I dislike. Yeah, I know it is an insignificant amount, but....
I simply wait for them to come out on TV since I am paying for cable anyway.
Like I say, minor quirks. The rest of me is real normal .

I wait till the movies come out at Redbox, I don't have to pay a ransom for a tub of popcorn and a soda, put up with annoying idiots texting throughout the show or being noisy, theater people who don't know what the volume control is for and have the sound at like 250 decibels. (yes, I know... that's an exaggeration in case you were seriously wondering!) My computer has a fantastic surround-sound system and I project the movie onto an 8x8 screen and sit back in a Lazyboy with the wife. Not a big fan of Cruise or Diaz, but I do like a decent action film. Just watched another Scientologist in "From Paris with Love", John Travolta, enjoyed the movie thoroughly, will probably buy that one for the collection here shortly!
