Transmission Trouble
It looks like I have lost the transmission in my 2003 Chevy S-10. The plan here is to buy a used one to replace it and my mechanic thinks we can get it done for less than $1500.00. The old one just refused to shift from low to high and had to limp to the shop at 25mph. It was running fine, fluid was clean and had been serviced within 7,000 miles when it quit. The transmission had a total of 107,000 miles.

I know it's no consolation but at least it's RWD. Every-time I mess with an auto (like change fluid) it seems to die within 4-5 months.

I have a 1999 K1500 Z-71. My tranny went out around Christmas last year and I had my mechanic rebuild it front to back with all new parts and updates for $1800. With a used one you run the risk of failure again with no warranty and the expense of dropping it again and doing it over. $1500 sounds kinda steep for just a swap with a used tranny. Just a thought.

We are in the discussion stages right now on the best solution to the problem. Your suggest is noted, appreciated and will definitely be considered. Thanks.

Been doing stuff like this all my time... I won't knock replacing it with one from a wreck as long as its a low mile unit...as in 70k or under to get out cheaper.I think the factory makes good ones and like finding a low mile unit verses a rebuilt. The rebuilders unless you pay for a high dollar unit are slacking in terms of quaility control.
If I really like the vehicle and want to keep it I would invest in a nice crate trans from GM.
with only 107k miles I would have a transmission guy that I trust look at it,sometimes small things go wrong and can be fixed...especially if the fluid isnt burnt.
I also agree with JcMack, seems like everytime fluid is changed problems begin.

What ever you do, don't take it to All transmision World. They told me they would replace mine with a rebuilt for 1500 then took it apart and told me they don't do that. They rebuilt it on site for 2300 and it only lasted a year.

I know its now 4 days later but I just saw your post.I used to rebuild transmissions for a living. That's a 4l60e in your truck. They are a pretty decent trans. It's possible that your problem could be a shift solenoid or a powertrain control module issue. If the fluid is nice and red and doesn't smell burned then it is possible there is no internal damage.Try to find a small trans shop, and stay away from the big chains(not to offend anyone).A little diagnostic work may save you considerable money.Good luck.
