NICS background check numbers by state

Somehow I have a difficult time believing the Kentucky numbers. Total state population is only 4 million. The numbers posted means that 25% of the population had a background check during the first seven months of the year. Maybe they are counting all of the meth busts also.

There's a qualifying statement in the table "NOTE: The totals above indicate the number of firearm background checks requested. The totals do not indicate firearm transfers." The relatively high number could be indicative of rejected checks.

Numbers look goofy to me, too, but you go back a couple years and the lead still holds. Bud's is in Lexington and they are a force nationwide plus Kentucky has about a gazillion gunshows a year.

One thing to consider is Carry Permits.

In Texas if you have a valid Texas CHL you do not have to do the Federal check.

What really surprised me was the amount of applications from IL.Considering its stand on CCL.Almost twice as many as IN. which mayor Daley says all the guns in chicago ar coming from.

None of the 2009 and 2010 numbers include CCW holders if they used it to fill out the form unless 2 or more guns were purchased at the same time. I don't know if the numbers are out of wack for KY but when I picked up my CCW in Jan of 2009 the Sheriffs deputy pulled out a box that must have had 2000 permits waiting to be picked up and for almost a year shops could hardly keep Black rifles on the shelf. So those numbers would not surprise me that much.

In Iowa either concealed carry permit or permit to purchase excludes you from the fed check.

For KY, don't forget long gun sales to neighboring states and visiting hunters.
SE MO, S IL, S IN, NW TN have a lot of people go to the big gunstores/gunshows in KY.
Even though I now live in OK, I still like to buy long guns when I visit KY to take advantage of better selection/prices.

Well, no, it wasn't all me..:D But I try to do my fair share.

I once read that Texans owned an average of 7 or 8 guns each. And I felt sorry for them. Such a wealthy state but so impoverished when it comes to guns! :( There was a time when I had more than that in the living room! :D

I have no explanation for the odd numbers. For a while I thought it was the total of all the above listed states. :) Or maybe a feud down in the hills getting ready to break out.

What's with the PA figures. When I bought a rifle there recently they said they used PICS not NICS for the background check.
