I have been thinking about taking some classes to become a firearms instructor. I like to teach and want to do my part to spread the joy of the shooting sports.
After Looking on their web site, there are no instructor counselors anywhere close to me to provide the b.i.t. courses. It kinda makes me want to get involved seeing that none of that is offered in my part of Montana.
Who here on the forum is an NRA instructor? Any pointers?

We have quite a few certified instructors on the forum, I've been one for about 10 years. The NRA may have special provisions for home study if there are no training counselors in your area (200mi?). Contact the training division and ask (703-267-1430).

A few years back a bunch of us from the local range got together and got an NRA training counselor to come to us and give us the course. We wanted to have NRA certified instructors for range officers. If you have any friends that are interested you may be able to do this.

I became a certified instructor about 16-17 years ago, however, I've never taught a class. I became an instructor when I lived in WY so I could teach CCW classes, but moved to Texas almost immediately after becoming certified. I've kept my certifications current but never used it.

I depends on who you want to teach. Surprisingly the NRA law enforcement firearms instructor certification is not valid everywhere. I think the civilian instructor course is however. I had the NRA certification and had to get recertified by the state to teach cops.

Having had to drive 3 hours to the Counselor in Ft Worth, I recognize your problem. However, trying to get enough people here to justify the Counselor didn't work, so it was either go do it, or forget about it. You really need to do the instructor courses in person with a good counselor, particualrly if you are not already a professional teacher in another discipline and know about objectives, lesson plans, etc. I was already a college instructor and was surprised at the number of NRA instructor students that started the course with NO clue how to teach anything.
