Default Do you have trouble reading some threads?

Do you have trouble reading the abbreviations in some threads? I guess it comes from texting. I don't do texting so I guess I am behind times. Some of them I have figured out like IMO. Does any one else have this problem? Don

Thanks for posting that. I had no idea what some of those meant, and I'd feel stupid asking my kids.

Now that new generation are coming into the gun world (and thank goodness for them), you see a lot more of these. One I've noticed lately is "LGS" for local gun shop; most I can figure out from context, others I just live without knowing.

Sometimes people are more interested in being with it instead of communicating, their call.

The tactical/AR folks are the biggest users of these, I think it would help very new shooters if more of an effort was made to effectively transmit information, but there's always been some of this, like pinned and recessed. It doesn't matter what is under discussion, half the mystery of any field is it's language. Whether the current fondness for abbreviations is language or laziness, or just an attempt to feel cool, I don't know.

I've always said the hardest thing about a new hobby is learning the jargon. What makes it even harder is when you don't have open minded or understanding people to help you out with jargon, abbreviations, hot topics, frequently asked questions.

A good example would be the IL* (internal lock). I remember coming here two years ago and wondering what the heck it was, why people hated it, and why it was there in the first place. Luckily when I opened a thread inquiring about it, it was explained to me in quite detail. I also got links to other threads about the IL.

*I have to add it to the list...

I just thought these exist to cover the fact that young folks can't spell.

I had figured most of the ones in JeepJeepwhats' post, but there are a couple of jargon morsels that I don't have a clue about what they mean. One is "YMMV" or something like that and the other is a word, or two words, something like "malone labe".

Then there are those that can have multiple meanings...
FTF = Face to Face, Failure to Feed, Failure to Function, Failure to Fire, etc.

That means Put it in Google

I simply copy and paste the abbreviation into the Google search block.
It usually presents a list with the definition visible in at least one of the listings, and I don't even have to click on it.

When that fails, go here-
NetLingo The Internet Dictionary

SAVE it to your favorites!

YMMV means "your mileage may vary," and is used to express the idea that you may have a different experience that the person using this acronym.

Molōn Labe is Greek -- Μολὼν λαβέ -- and means, "come, take them." The phrase was reportedly the defiant response of King Leonidas I of Sparta to Xerxes I of Persia when the Spartans were asked to lay down their arms and surrender, at the onset of the Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC). Today, it is often an expression of strong pro-Second Amendment views.

Inscription on marble tablet at Thermopylae, Greece, commemorating the Spartans' noble battle against the Persian Horde.

When threatened by the prospect of a rain of arrows launched by Persian archers against his 300 warriors, in the words of the Persian envoy, "so many arrows that the Sun will be blotted out," Leonidas also reportedly replied, "Good. Then we shall fight in the shade."

My kind of guy.

The only ones I have a problem reading are the ones that contain no punctuation, have bad spelling and are three paragraphs worth in one sentence.

"Fo shizzle" is a contribution to American English made by one Snoop Dog Dog, and means, "for sure," or, "certainly." The play on "fo" becomes "pho," the popular Vietnamese soup, which is always served with a fresh spring of basil, hence, "bay-sizzle." Actually, some Vietnamese entrepreneur beat me to this, or or it seems:

Fo shizzle, ragsizzle.
