Default Learned something at the range, yesterday.

I went to the indoor range to do a basic rifle sight in at 50 yards and to start breaking in a new pistol. What I found was that I am rusty, especially when trying to shoot a rifle without a Lead Sled or a Fire Control rest. The scope sits rather high on this rifle and it certainly needs a cheekpiece of some sort. It is a milsurp with a rather robust trigger pull that does not help, either. I had to really concentrate to get the groups down.

With the pistol, my trigger pull skills were pretty off for the first 20-30 rounds. It got better, and having a laser on the gun helped see what I was doing. However, I was pleased that I was having no DA to SA transition issues, so I guess the trigger is pretty good even if I am not. My problem is pulling low at the moment. My left/right alignment seemed pretty good.

Still, even a mediocre afternoon at the range beats any time spent at work.

Yeah shooting skills are perishable and a bad day at the range beats a day at work!

This usually indicates *pushing* the weapon in anticipation of the recoil. I find that concentration on the front sight will eliminate this.

I always have to really concentrate to keep groups tight

Steve this comb raising kit worked for me on my rifle. Quality is high and price is low. What is not to like? Don

DeadAye and H Richard:

I did some dry firing at home watching the laser dot and it looks like my issue is trigger pull. I have long skinny fingers but not terribly strong hands. The pistol is a CZ SP-01 Phantom, and the trigger is such that if I put a bit more finger "through" the trigger so I am pulling almost on the joint, the dropping goes away. The REALLY odd thing is that if I use the pad of the finger only, I get the dropping in the single action pull, but not the DA pull. I think the SA pull is so much shorter that I pull down on the rounded bottom part of the trigger as I have run out of finger articulation to pull straight back. When I try using the bigger backstrap, my DA pull goes to rats, too. I guess I just have funny hands.

I shall look into that, although the rifle currently wears its original sling which is mounted on the side of the stock at the rear. Maybe it would be no big deal to slit the cover and feed the sling through.
