At my last cleaning my Tucson dentist discovered a serious cavity. Unfortunately for me it was a tooth that supports the forward end of a three tooth bridge. Now I have had that gold bridge since I was 14, we're talking 45 years here, so I certainly got my money's worth out of it. Also on the unfortunate side of the ledger I have no dental insurance. So I am looking at $3,600, which I simply do not have, out of my pocket, for a new three tooth bridge and the root canal. The good news is that we live about a two hour drive north of Nogales Mexico where they have lots of excellent dentists who do most of their business treating gringo's like me.

Armed with a recommendation from a friend I called on Friday and was given a ten o'clock appointment the following Monday. They take credit cards and have a shuttle that picks you up at the border for the short ride to their office. The office was very busy, crowded with mostly gringo senior citizens like me. Everyone spoke passable English and I still speak a little Spanish so communication wasn't a problem. The office was nothing fancy but the equipment was all state of the art and the staff was very friendly, accommodating and professional.

Today they took x rays, created the impressions for the new bridge, removed the old bridge (yes I kept the gold), built/installed a temporary bridge and did the root canal. I admit to having been more than a little nervous about the root canal, I had always heard that they were extremely painful, but was pleasantly surprised when it took 30 minutes and was virtually pain free. After three hours in the chair but bolstered by three shots, I left in pretty good shape but am hurting tonight as the pain meds have long since worn off. I go back in two weeks when my new bridge comes back from the lab.

The total bill came to $1,218 and I paid $750 of it today with my Visa. I'll pay the balance when they put the permanent bridge in. Anyway you slice it I saved nearly $2,400 and am very pleased with the experience. I am fortunate to live close enough to Mexico to have this option and will happily recommend this office to my friends. If you don't have dental insurance (or even if you do as they will honor it), and are anywhere near Mexico I would encourage you to explore this option. As always...YMMV (o;

I had a bridge put in 9 yrs ago. It will never happen again. Good luck with yours.

My story is much different. I was 55 yrs old and needed two teeth extracted. The dentist said to let him build a bridge for $1,000. I did. Within a year, one of the supporting teeth broke. Former dentist had died. New dentist said I needed bridge made into a partial. Only $1400. Had it done. Within three years, other teeth had to be extracted. Oral surgeon said just remove all the lowers and put in dentures. Already had dentures in the top. I did as suggested.

Removal of remaining lower teeth, $1700. Had denture made and it is beautiful but it was $2800. Fits perfect. Total cost for 9yrs almost $7000 and there was no root canal or other treatment but no more tooth problems for the rest of my life. No more dental expense.

Do you guys remember dentists when you were a kid? I remember the dentists having drills that were a series of articulated arms connected to the drill bit via pulleys and cables. I'm still terrified of dentists.

Oh yeah  I remember....
We also mixed our own filling stuff. Mercury was one of the ingredients :eek:

Then came N2O - No more fear of the dentist :p

I am having a crown done today. I friggin hate this stuff. At least the techs are attractive

As much as I like to complain about the state of Mexico's affairs.

I do buy eyeglasses ($550 here, $145 there) and meds south of the border.

I forgot, and in Mexico they will make me single vision glasses for driving.

They won't do that here.

Don't forget that wonderful smell of burning tooth-and my guy didn't use novacaine  But we DID get to pick out a pretty fing from the box on our wat out
Now, The most painful part is the shots to the gum numbing the area. Root canals-ha bring them on. I'm getting ready to get an implant fitted as I broke my upper canine (or whatever they call it). had it pulled about 9 months ago and the bone ought to have grown back to support the stud. If it were up to me, I'd leave it-but wifey says no-when I smile I look like a goofus.

A really tough case, eh? :D

That is WAY more than one little tooth can be held responsible for.....:p

(ya gotta love it when Caj sets me up.)

People with means from around the globe come to America for top-shelf healthcare. Impoverished Mexicans come to America and receive free healthcare. Middle class Americans go to Mexico for discount healthcare. There's got to be a message in there somewhere... not sure what it is.

I was due to have a tooth (#11) pulled last week. However, I chose to put it off until the first of the year. That is the same tooth you broke Caj. I have a bridge behind it and would have had a rather substantial hole in the top of my teeth. I can't remember the word your wife used, but I felt I would look like that also. I also am going to get implants and the dentist said it would take about 6 months or so. He must need a new boat.

What exactly is a middle class American anymore? They're in very short supply around here.

max; I also am going to get implants and the dentist said it would take about 6 months or so. He must need a new boat.

You are not kidding about the boat! I just had an implant put in two weeks ago.

$500 for the bone graft last year to build up the area.
$90 for the pre-op x-rays.
$2300 for the implant & surgery.

Now I wait 4 months. Then my dentist puts the on the implant extension, and the crown to the tune of $1124

Yep, $4014 total, and that is with my dental insurance picking up $700!!!

I still don't think I would be getting this work done in Mexico.

Well said, Phil. It's hard to discount that old adage that "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence." Perhaps in this case the feeling is that "the healthcare is always better on the other side of the river".:p

My sister had a good experience, dental work in Mexico 450.00,(over the span of 2 days) or 8,200 dollars in Lubbock Texas. Turns out the dentist trained in the US and the implants were overnighted from san Antonio . Thu Lubbock dentist wanted to do the work over a 2 month time span

I had a root canal done $1200. AFTER the work was done I was told that now I need a crown for the same tooth....another $1200.

I'm not spending another $1200 on a tooth. No back tooth is worth $2400.

It's gonna get yanked PDQ.

WG840, Sounds you went through the same BS as my bride. A tooth broke and the dentist started off talking about a 3 tooth bridge...then it was to be a 4 then a 5. Three consultations and six months later she has a beautiful 5 tooth bridge that cost us over $5,000 AFTER the insurance. Seems like every US dentist we have seen in the last few years tries to steer you to the most expensive procedures possible and frankly I am through with all of them.

It sounds like you have issues with Mexico given your reluctance to have dental work done there but I have no such reservations. When you simply do not have the money and you do have a hole in your mouth you tend to look at options. I know a number of folks who have combined a nice Mexico vacation, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo, etc., and paid for the trip with what they saved by having their dental work done while there. I feel much better this morning but do confess to some serious self medication last night. (o; I'll post again when the permanent bridge goes in the first week in January.
