I have never once been asked "how many?". The most usual question I hear is "what do you have?". Then again, I live in Kentucky, even the most liberal of liberals likely have a gun or five.

And the out of state folks who I have talked to about it are seldom anti-gun, but usually just a desire to keep guns out of the hands of bad guys and crazies. And with that we agree 100%.

Not much of an issue in Texas. The occasional liberal colleague will see my CHL and say something to the effect of "I did not know you were one of those". Then I say, "can you sue a policeman who was in his squad car in front of your house if he does not prevent your family from being killed by a madman who comes on the front door?". Well, I can't either.

Default Great old thread

My younger sister has a pair of post-college kids that have absolutely no common sense. They are both loaded with student loan debt for which they each willingly and purposely became indebted........................but, as usual, it is the fault of someone else. They each have new cars but cannot seem to find the cash to repay the student loans. Both returned from academia with heads filled with mush particularly regarding firearms.

At the most recent of the dreaded family gatherings, the older nephew, a lawyer, overheard another old soldier and me discussing my small collection of M1 carbines.

His question: Why do you need more than one rifle? My answer: It is called the Bill of Rights and not the bill of needs.

The professional orator simply walked away mumbling to himself.

Default Old thread but I like.....

Old thread, but I like the new comments to a still pertinent subject.

To the Netherlands - All of my guns ARE sporting equipment. I have no desire to use one for any other purpose. That is unless somebody FORCES me to.

When somebody finds out I have guns the first thing they ask is, "Can I see them??"

I basically tell them I am a collector and collect historically important firearms. That seems to satisfy most of them.

Actually, down here unless you live in Austin, everyone just assumes you have at least one gun.

When the "anti's" find out that I have a loaded firearm in the house, I ask them if they have a fire extinguisher in their house. They say yes they do because you want to be ready for a fire. I then ask them if they keep it fully charged with chemicals, to which they say they have to be ready when the fire starts. I then ask what is the difference between keeping a fire loaded and fire extinguisher charged?

I was at a wedding a few days ago where one of the other guests told me that he was afraid of guns. He is not anti-gun, just afraid of them. I told him there was nothing to be afraid of with proper instruction. Then I extended an invitation to take him to the range where I will teach him how to shoot. I will start him with a Winchester 9422. I believe I can bring him to our side.

If he ever asks how many guns I own, I will have to give him an honest answer; I don't know. I would first have to count the guns on my firearms inventory.

I've found that they aren't worth the breath or the 15 seconds of my life to answer them. They only want to criticize and refuse to listen to anything reasonable anyhow.

I've been asked various questions by acquaintances or people I work with who know that I am a pro-2nd Amendment gun owner, including many of those stated by others. If it appears that the question is asked as part of general curiosity about something they are totally unfamiliar with, I might just say "several, how about you?". Invariably then you get the answer that they don't own a gun, and would not even consider having one in their home where there are children or grandchildren around. Sometimes that leads to a rational discussion, and in a few instances, I have successfully introduced non-gun folks to the world of firearms.

One of these was an experienced nurse who only saw the end result of the use of a gun, usually by a criminal, less often by the police. She believed guns had some magical type power to loosen inhibitions and make people do things they otherwise might not do. After several discussions about guns, self defense, the 2nd Amendment, etc., she and her husband went to a local gun store and rented some handguns for their first range experience. Today they are avid shooters and collectors.

Anti-gunners can be suprised that shooting prairie dogs is great sport, and most ranchers are happy to give permission to hunt. What shocks the antis is what 3 or 4 well prepared prairie doggers bring for arms and ammo for a week long trip of shooting prairie dogs.

Years ago I went to visit a close friend and his girlfriend at their apartment. I was unaware his girlfriend was virulently anti-gun, and when she noticed my gun (shoulder holster) she began an epic, profanity-filled tirade against me and screamed at me to get out of their home. I apologized and left. Haven't talked to either of them in fourteen years. I don't blame him, he did what he had to for his relationship.

I like that. I have many screw drivers, wrenches, pliers, saws, etc, including duplicates in some cases. Each has a purpose and one that is perfect suited for one job may be entirely inappropriate for another.

Why do I need a gun?
I hope I never NEED a gun, but I own oh I don't remember less just say I own some.
I never needed a gun in my 20+ years as a law enforcement official, but I always had one with me for my protection and those around me.

Default Answer to "Why do you . . .

need to have so much ammo?" (Rabidly anti-gun coworker accompanied me to our house to pick up some items and noticed the box from Cheaper Than Dirt with the ORM-D sticker on our doorstep.)
Usually followed by sounds of disgust and suggestions of limitations on ammo purchases.

I tell them (usually a repeat) that I am a competition marksman, hunter and recreational shooter. I then ask them how many tennis balls a player should be allowed to hit per day for practice. And how many balls a golf player should be allowed to hit each day. Or baseballs. You want to limit me to "X rounds of ammo a day?" Let's restrict tennis players to hitting 10 "rounds" a day. etc. Of course they are quick to say tennis balls don't kill anyone. I've given up on noting that bullets don't, either, by themselves.
How many guns? I usually just recount to them the ones I have for competition and recreation and leave it at that. Describing (proudly) my Winchester 100 to someone, once, he reared back in horror and said "That's an assault weapon!"

I have several friends who are beyond help when it comes to discussing guns, so when the subject comes up I just walk away. They are truly phobic.

"Because I can."
I once got "IN IT" with a group of antis fromSweden. Your answer of Because I can--was exactly what I told them. Needless to say, I never heard back from them.

I remember way back when I had many more than I do now.I had at least 40 of all types. About 18 months ago, Someone asked me why I wanted a gun?I said because Iwas short on guns and needed to buy another. I got the "deer in headlights" look and she was shakinig her head. She asked how many I had--I told her the most I could recall was at least 40. She about had a series of strokes whenI said that butshe continued with: "Why did I want another gun?" I said: "Ive been a good boy and needed a new toy that im rewarding myself with." Conversation ended peacefully.

BTW, since she has been my neighbor--ive bought only two and she would have a conniption fit if she knew I was planning getting at least 3more by January.

I'm surprised you friend didn't leave with you. Who in the hell would want someone like that for a girlfriend. Guns aside what a total lack of manners to treat a guest to you residence this way!
There's a case of one turing into a 1st class b**ch before someone stupidly married her.

When I'm asked by the clueless why I carry a gun I give them the old reply to us "Because a cop is too heavy to carry around all day!" Most of the clueless have never heard this before.

It was an extremely uncomfortable situation. I was shocked and wondered where the hatred was coming from. She went from happy to see me to never wanting to see me again, literally. I would never treat an anti-gun guest in my home in such a way, but it was her home. I just left and waited for someone to call me to apologize. No one ever did.

Recently I had an oppurturnity to be in the company of my new Canadian neighbor. He is a large game hunter so I felt comfortable disussing hand guns. Needless to say I was surprized when both he and his wife seemed taken back when I mentioned that I own more then one hand gun and I have a concealed carry permit. They seemed shocked when they asked why I felt that I needed to own a hand gun. (The number of guns did not seem to be an issue) I responded by saying I felt it was better to have a gun and not need it, then to need a gun and not have one. Their unexpected response was that hand guns are alien to Canadians and they would never own a hand gun, let alone carry one.

I would be surprised if they were speaking for all Canadians but based upon their extreme over-reaction, they seem to be making the case that anti-handgun is a national attitude in Canada.
Spending considerable time on different forums and chat rooms, I've noticed people born & raised in the old British Empire have the brainwashed mindset that honest people don't have guns, especially handguns. My East African internet friends have been visibly upset when they see me on Skype as my revolver is often in view if I go get coffee during our conversation.

A lot of folks from countries that outlaw or heavily restrict guns have that fear of guns and/or anti-gun attitude. It's brainwashed into them and they bring it with them to the USA... and then they vote like they were still back home under oppressive government control.

My neighbors would be concerned to find someone around here that didn't have a gun.

Honestly I haven't been asked, most people I know are at least ok with guns even if they don't own them.

Now I've had a few "Why are you carrying that here?!?" To which my answer is, in case we will be in the news tomorrow.
Most of them are puzzled at that and just walk off.

Just like it would be here if guns were banned. They would be something to be afraid of because the only people with guns would be trying to kill you.

In a lot of those countries they use machetes to cut off people's hands, too. A gun is just a thing. It takes a person to add the evil to it, just like it does a machete.

My own mom, rabid liberal and feminist she is, never allows for facts and only allows for her agenda.

I saved my young family with a pistol many years back. When we told her about it, she said I shouldn't have had a gun. I asked her if she'd feel better about herself if I let us be killed? She said I shouldn't have had a gun. No winning with them.

So... recently I had a slow day and I went to the range to sight in a 24-3 and while at the range I got a call for a job near my mom's house. After that I stopped by mom's and helped her doing chores. She's 84, so I help her as often as I can.

Told her what I was up to, job after a range trip, stopped by to see her and she lost it!

Why do I have so many guns?! What makes me think I need them?! Yadda yadda yadda.

I asked her how many golf clubs she has. She indignantly said one set - like that's the right answer....

I told her she should have only one club, she didn't need all of them. One would be enough.

She said they all are for different purposes - so... I jumped in with EXACTLY, just like my guns! You shouldn't be wasting so much time and money on golf.

She shut up and then changed the subject.

Liberals can not argue because the cognitive dissonance rots their minds.

One of the most asnine things I have heard an anti gun person ask upon learning or seeing someone has a gun is Geez you don't keep that thing loaded do you? Then I usually reply with, an unloaded gun ain't good for nothing but a paper weight.

I had to laugh when I read that because my own aging mom (age 86) hit me with the same exact questions recently. No, she isn't a liberal or an anti-gun nut. She just thinks that a few are plenty 'cause dad always did just fine his entire life with three prized S&W handguns and a small variety of long guns (the latter almost never used). She doesn't "get" the joy of collecting and thinks I should keep my modest retirement savings in the bank where it belongs.

It was a fun conversation. Moms are great.

I like when they ask, "What caliber of pistol do you have?" I reply, What caliber do you want?

My Dad wasn't antigun but mostly just nongun sort of guy. He did hunt with a bow though.
Once the subject of guns came up at his house and about my brother's and mine. Almost on cue my brother and I pulled up our cover garments to show that we both were carrying. Dad asked what are you afraid of here and brother said, "not much".
I don't really associate with anti-gun people but do have to assume some of my wife's coworkers in the medical field are and usually avoid the subject in social occasions. I have been asked about my guns before by people and have stated I collect old revolvers when I felt like replying. That usually seems to satisfy them and I get asked no more.
The lady that cuts my hair was sort of anti-gun when I first met her and from what slanted views she'd gotten from the media mainly. Over the years we've discussed guns and why I own and carry them. She's now pro-gun from my educating her and hopefully can educate some of her customers now. I've never told her though that I'm carrying when I get my hair cut but expect she knows.

Most of the folks I know/deal with would probably piss themselves if they ever knew I was carrying while standing there talking to them.

I have found that when attending an outdoor function, I will usually wear a repellent of Deet to keep the annoying blood sucking insects from buzzing and trying to bite me.
I applied this same logic to when attending a socially diverse function,
I wear a NRA hat and shooting shirt as a repellent to keep the blood sucking insects from buzzing and trying to bite me.

Default My reply...

I usually just grin and say, "My collection is what a lot of folks would call 'A Pretty Good Start'..."

Once, after saying this, one person at work pushed a bit and said, "But I'm sure you don't have any assault weapons... I mean, you're a reasonable person!" to which I replied, "Yes, I am indeed a reasonable person, so why would it scare you if I did have them?"

Unhappy New Neighbor

A single lady around my age moved in across the street from me. I chatted to her when she walked her dogs past the house. Nice lady so I asked her to lunch. Things went well until she found I had firearms. She said "I'm scared of people into guns you never know when they will snap". Oh well best I found out this former Michigan citizen felt that way before I go too fond of her.
Sad that some folks feel any and all gun owners are just one insult away from going on a shooting spree. A little research will show most spree shooting is done by folks that show signs of instability for years before they 'snap'.
