Now that's a loaded question. I'll guess a pre 24 or 21, the RMs, .22 outdoorsman, the Model 45, and the 6 1/2" Model 29. Well, at least I want all of them.

I think you could say any of the K frame 22s right now.
Glad I got a couple when I did.

For me here its the "N" frame 357mag's I just don't ever see used ones. Even the ruger security six's in 357mag are rare too. I guess everyone is hanging on to them.
On the net the 357mag and 41mag in the N frames seem to sell very quickly too. It makes me wonder if the 41mag is gaining in popularity lately? Bill
My wish list right now is;
S&W M57 4" barrel 41mag in nickel
S&W M58 4" barrel 41mag in nickel
S&W M27 or M28 6" barrel in 357mag in blue or nickel (N frame)
S&W M29 6 1/2" barrel, 44mag in nickel
My local dealer has most of them new but the 357mag. I don't mind the key start safety.

John C. Garand's single shot .22 target pistol would be nice.

Among all the great revolvers that will be suggested otherwise, I just want to throw in the Model 41, a classic 22 target pistol that stands alone in the S&W line up.
Beyond that, I wouldn't mind one of the Schofields they reintroduced around 2001.

I haven't seen any model 19, 581, or 586s at the gun stores or gun shows lately.

Just my opinion here, but these are the ones that don't seem to last too long on the tables at gun shows:
1. 3.5" Model 27
2. Model 28s - either barrel length, but the 4-inchers go fast
3. 6.5" pinned and recessed Model 29 - the "Dirty Harry" gun
4. Model 19 or Model 66 2.5"
5. Any pre-war S&W in really good shape; particularly with the original box and papers
I'm only hunting for the #5 specimens now - particularly any S&W made in 1939 (hint!).

.45 Schofield
.44 HE 2nd Model
Model 27
Model 29
Model 4006
They all introduced and fired a "S&W" cartridge (except the HE).

About fifteen years ago I was just a little late when what was alleged to be Ed Murrow's S&W kit gun showed up in SGN. He's one of my few heroes, and I ran, not walked, to the phone. Turned out that I was about two days late and the gun had been sold.
Still looking for a nice 4" Triple Lock. The one I have is externally restored and is a nice display piece, but other than salvaging a clunker, not that satisfying.
The 3" medium weight barrel square butt Australian Model 10s are nice shooters, and I wish I had gotten one a few years back. My daughter has one and it is one nice little gun. I think I would like it better than the 3" HB RB guns.
Maybe a 15-22...
A M25 MG in the .45 ACP commemorative version would be nice.
But I'm lucky to have what I've got, and with luck will have the health to enjoy them as long as the Good Lord sees fit.

I know frank hammer had a triplelock that seen action. I had a 1917 that I had made into a convertable 45 colt/45 acp. I also had s&w target sights put on with a nice ramp, hammer beavertailed. I stupidly traded it off. I also had the front sight with a red insert and rear white outline. I had found a brand new .455 clyinder and a extra crane. It worked nice.

What I'd like best, or what other folks would like? Sorry, its more than 5.
I'd like a 4" 44 2nd model. I'm not real particular, target or fixed sight, or both.
A nice prewar K32 (as opposed to what I've got.)
I'd like a postwar transition 3rd model 44 military, just for fun.
And I'd really like a pre-model 29 5 screw 4" nickel.
Wouldn't mind a K22 Outdoorsman in Factory nickel, or even a 2nd model in factory nickel.
I'd even like one of the 38/44 Outdoorsman in alloy frame.
One of the war time production 357 mags would be nice as a conversation piece.
In all fairness, I feel like the luckiest guy in the world just for having the guns I've managed to find. They can stay in my possession until I die. Then maybe my widow will distribute them into the wind so others can find and enjoy them as much as me.

When you say "The 5 most wanted", you don't specify by whom. The list for the S&W collector is much different than the list for the average guy. Many of the folks here are avid collectors with a great deal of knowledge on the subject. Then there are folks like me, with just enough knowledge to know some of the basics. So, having said that, here is my list.
(Revolvers being pre-lock, of course!)
Model 29
Model 686
Model 617
Model 27 (or mod. 28)
Model 41
Honorable mentions:
Model 19
Model 36
Just my opinion!

Lets see...
1. HD
2. 3.5" RM
3. 58
4. Pre 29 4"
5. 520
These 5 should cure the fix for a while.

I have 4 of my 5. First a M17-6 with short under lug, M14-3, 4506-1 & a SS 1911. I am shopping for a M25 in .45acp to fill out the spot.

Triple lock
I just have to put in a good word for the 1st Mod. Hand Ejector or Triple Lock when it comes to desirable S&W's

I’m a little shocked that the Model 66 isn’t getting mentioned more here. I guess either everyone has one or doesn’t think so highly of them like I do. Right now this is my S&W desires list.
Model 66 4 inch
Model 66 2.5 or even better 3 inch
Model 642 no lock (this one is next as soon as funds build up)
Model 629 4 inch
Model 10 4 inch with the older tapered barrel

2- Pre 27’S
3- Triple Lock
4- Early hand ejectors
5- 38/44’s
6- M – 19’S

1- 3 ½” M-27
2- 38/44
3- 520 NYSP
4- As new M-19 2 ½”
5- M-39, only because that was the must have pistol when I went on the job in 1974.

My 5 most wanted...
Model 25-5, blue, long barrel;
Model 41 with 7" barrel and muzzle brake;
Model 66-1, 6" ( have an offer in on one right now );
Model 29 (any variant but no later than -2), 6.5" or either long barrels;
Model 57, nickel, long barrel
I already have a 27-2 (1972, 6"), a 28-2 (1977, 4"), a 41 (1960) with a 6" cut down barrel, a Victory (1943) , a pre-Victory M&P (1940), a .45 ACP Model 1917 and a Model 17-2 (1968)
I think if I can get the other five I will be happy for a while......perhaps not

More functional, unmessed with, honest holster worn un-kitchen table gunsmithed M&P's, 10's, and 64's from any and all era, from the oldest to the newest.......
Maybe a 4" 38/44 HD, but I won't sell my soul for one. I'll take a 0% blue one in "cop gun" condition.
I don't own collector pieces, a decent Model 28 is the same as a Registered Magnum to me, they are all N-Frame .357's, just that people want more for the RM's and I tend to just pass those by. I don't need to pay $2,000 to shoot .38's and .357's through an N-Frame.
I am also a Ruger fanatic, I like meat and potatoes service revolvers that last forever. I'll leave the "investment grade", engraved and blinged up pieces to the real collectors......nice pieces for the safe are fine, but I'll see ya at the pistol range!

How about 10? Five doesn't cover it.
My personal wish list in no particular order:
1. Prewar HD 4 inch barrel.
2. 1046, or the non-existent 1016 would be even better.
3. M-20, Model marked and any dash.
4. Any 44 HE 2nd, 3rd, or 4th, but a 4 inch 1926 transitional would be best.
5. Baby chief with a half moon front sight in 98% or better, blue.
6. Pre-29 6 1/2 inch or shorter.
7. Any Devel or ASP modified 39.
8. Anything engraved by Alvin White or DJ (there stuff is out of this world nice).
9. Alloy framed HD.
10. And of course, a completely original RM but for a fraction of the cost.
And I don't want to pay full price for any of them.

This is what my ideal top 5 would be:
1. 44 HE Triple-lock
2. RM
3. K-32
4. 22-32 kit gun - prewar
5. 38/44 HD
Plus box and papers for all!
These are what I have in the way of lower cost substitutes:
1. M1917 in 45 acp
2. Model 27-2
3. 1905 HE 32-20
4. Model 1953 kit gun
5. Model 28 Hwy Patrolman... yes I know, a 357 but it looks like, feels like, and shoots 38 spl like a HD .
Box and papers for none!

My list contains 7 guns. All would probably be some version of the #3 or Triple Lock.
Number 1 & 2 would be anything in 38/40 and anything in .44 Rimfire.
Number 3 would be in 45 S&W Special. (I think this may have never been a "production" gun. If not, I could pass on it.
The final 4 would be anything in the following:
450 Eley
450 Revolver
45 Webley
455 Mark I
These are all pretty much interchangeable, so to fit my requirements the guns would have to letter as one of the above.
The reason for this list is these are the ones that eluded me when I was collecting S&W revolver chamberings.
I would like to be able to say that I had them at one time.
(There are some newer chamberings that I haven't had, but they don't count 'cause they didn't exist when I was collecting this theme.)

M41
M52
Gold Cup

I can't help it, but I have to add the Model 547, either 4" or 3".
I wish S&W would make it again in SS, I still think it would sell well, it's a great bridge gapper between .357 and .38 Spl., and maybe if they offered a moon clip version as well as the berylium clip design, it would pump up sales.

My view is the following S&W
Any P&R Model 17 or pre 17
Model 27-2 with 6.5 inch barrel
Model 29-2 with 6.5 inch barrel
Model 629 no dash P&R any barrel length
S&W Model 41 in either barrel length
Honorable mention
S&W Model 28-2 either barrrel length
S&W Model 617
I have everything on my list except the 27-2 with 6.5 inch barrel

1) The 22 long rifle Registered Magnum
2) The mate to above in 357 Magnum
3) A 45 colt Heavy Duty
4) A light lug Heavy Duty
5) Alloy Frame Outdoorsman
Those would be my top five, but I am a sucker for Heavy Duty's and Outdoorsman's.
