Shoot Vintage Smith in IDPA?
We're having a casual, local IDPA match this Saturday, and everyone's invited to shoot "SSR", Stock Service Revolver.
Any reason why I shouldn't shoot my 1917 Hand Ejector?
I have some standard pressure wadcutters, a cheap holster, and one speedloader.
I think it would be a hoot to compete with it, 3" barrel and all.

With that ammunition, there's absolutely no reason not to use it.
The odds are, it'll be one of the slickest shooting guns in the match.

Although kinda long, it does, indeed, have an amazing action compared to my modern Smith's.

Just don't use anything other than standard loads and it'll do just fine.
Do a bit of practice with dummy rounds so the speedloaders don't scratch your grip.
You do have a nice vintage holster to go with it, correct?

Unfortunately, I don't.
I went through my misc parts box last night and found an abomination of a nylon rig that fits it well.

You may need way more than one speedloader to complete the course of fire.

Why not? I enjoyed bringing out this late 1940's to the NY Police & Fire Games last year. I didn't win, but boy I had fun with it.

If it's a 1917
why did you picture it with .38 Specials? A 1917 uses .45 ACP or AR ammo. If it's really a 1917 you need moonclips...not speedloaders.

I read that not as "Model 1917", but as "Vintage 1917". Like me posting a picture of my 92 Winchester and calling it "my 1918 Winchester".

You need a strong-side holster that covers the trigger. You must use the holster strap if you have one on it. The problem with the nylon abominations is that they are very slow to draw with the strap, and don't hold the gun if the strap is not used. Some don't cover the trigger at all, and should not be used in competitiion (specifically banned). Typically, the shooter wants to use the loose sock holsters without the strap, and the gun winds up on the ground.
You need 3 speedloaders, and the ammunition needs to be at least power factor 105, which any 158gr standard .38 meets. Most WC light loads don't. You can either put the speedloaders on belt carriers or just carry them in a handy pocket.
IDPA/SSR is a fine way to show off vintage revolers being used.

It won't take them.
It's a .38 Hand Ejector made in 1917, not an M1917.

That's good info, thanks.
I'm slow to draw anyway, so that shouldn't be a problem. That's just one part of the process I try not to rush.
My nylon abomination does cover the trigger and doesn't have a strap. The gun fits snugly now that I cut a few threads from the bottom which allows the barrel to [i]almost[/] peek through the bottom. It feels firm and safe. (I told you it was an orphan in my parts box. )
My local rangemaster told me it was, indeed, ok to keep speedloaders in a pocket, and there will be two extra K frame speedloaders I can borrow at the match.
I have some round-nose 158 grain ammo somewhere on the misc. ammo shelf, so that's checked off the list.
My main problem is having to work until 1 or 2am the night before the match. 7:30am comes awfully early.
