May we continue to honor their sacrifice in our words and our actions.

Uncommon bravery by common men. Can't fathom their last days, but they held their end of the rope, for sure. Shamefully it seems there are those that will make their sacrifice futile. Always remember the Alamo and the spirit of these men.

When I was a kid, Texas Independence Day was a school holiday. The opening parade of the Houston Fat Stock Show and Rodeo was usually timed to coincide with the holiday, so the school kids could attend. One of my best memories of high school was the day my ROTC Bn marched in the parade.
Now, the event receives little or no mention. In this more modern age, it has become almost an embarrassment.
Things change, but not always for the better.

The story of the Alamo always impressed me in school. June 1970 I saw it in person. Big disappointment, all commercial and no 'zing' for such a historic place. Some one must have cleaned the place up and it now it looks respectfully historical where heroes died in the cause of freedom.

Most patriotic act of insubordination ever on part of Travis. No doubting the garrison's bravery. I prefer to think of the revenge that occured just up the road from where I am sitting at San Jacinto (Now part of LaPorte). I'll bet Santa Anna looked just like his mustached mother when he tried to escape in that dress! Remember the Alamo!

When I was in school and even much later when I was employed in banking, San Jacinto Day was observed.
I was fascinated by the story of the Alamo and the battle as a kid and still feel a certain reverence for the shrine.

My in-laws are Belgian. They came to visit us in San Antonio and we took them to the Alamo. My mother in law took it all in and had her son translate what she thought "This is historic just like our town of Bastogne, brave american men fighting for freedom". They lived and suffered under the Nazi occupation. I explained that the city had built over all but a small amount of the Alamo.

I recall a line from the Landmark Book series volume on the Alamo:
"Thermopylae had its messenger of defeat, the Alamo had none."

I have been to the Alamo three times. What makes me furious is that the street in front of the chapel is where so many brave men died. Hundreds, if not thousands of cars drive every day on a street that was built on blood-soaked hallowed ground.

Unfortunately battlefields that are in the center of settled areas tend to get built over. Atlanta, Franklin, Nashville, Chantilly, Bunker Hill, to name a few.

The Alamo Lyrics
A hundred and eighty were challenged by Travis to die
By a line that he drew with his sword as the battle drew nigh
A man that crossed over the line was for glory
and he that was left better fly.
and over the line crossed a hundred and seventy-nine.
Hey up Santa Anna they're killing your soldiers below
So the rest of Texas will know
And remember the Alamo.
Jim Bowie lay dying his blood and his powder were dry
but his knife at the ready to take him a few in reply.
Young Davy Crockett lay laughing and dyin'
The blood and the sweat in his eyes
For Texas and freedom a man was more willing to die.
Hey up Santa Anna, we're killing your soldiers below
So the rest of Texas will know
And remember the Alamo.
A courier came to a battle so bloody and loud
and found only skin and bones where he once left a crowd.
Fear not little darlin' of dyin'
if the world is sovereign and free
For we'll fight to the last
for as long as liberty be.
Hey up Santa Anna they're killing your soldiers below
So the rest of Texas will know
And remember the Alamo.

Even though I am a native-born Texan, and had a 5th generation Grandfather fight at San Jacinto...the Battle of the Alamo is one of the most awe inspiring battles in world history to me.
Rest in peace Alamo heroes.

Read Travis' Letter addressed
"To The People of Texas and All Americans In The World"
Dated February 24, 1836
To this day I cannot read that letter without choking up.
People nowadays do not understand that there were (and hopefully still are) folks that can devote themselves to a cause and give up everything including their lives.
God Bless this Wonderful State in which He allows my family and I to live.

I took basic training in San Antonio while in the Air Force but never had a chance to see the Alamo. I always wanted to go back but never had the chance. I would have liked to see more of all of Texas.

The Alamo is one of those places I have always wanted to see.
We may have to fight that battle agin if things don't change.
