I'm reading Patton's, War As I Knew It, and he repeatedly refers to his vehicle as a "peep", not a jeep.

What is a peep? It can't be a misprint; he used it too many times.

Thanks,

My father was in an armored cav unit prior to, and during WWII. His unit was one of the first to get jeeps, on a test and evaluate basis.
They called them Peeps, after a comic charactor. They were made by Bantam, before that company was forced out by big detroit.
As far as I know, my father always called the Dodge command car....the Dodge command car.

Any truth to the story I heard decades ago that Jeep is short for GP = General Purpose? And Peep short for PP = Personal Purpose?

David-

I'd heard that GP story, too, but the research that I've done
this past week said that it isn't so, and that there was even a cartoon character in the 1930's called a Jeep. And some ineffective soldiers were dubbed Jeeps by the others.

Patton was an Armor man, so that probably explains the Peep name, based on what's been posted here.

The Dodge command car looks like the predecessor of the "Power Wagon" of the late 40's and 50's.
We also had a 3/4 ton version with a water tank in it that we used as a rural fire truck for fighting prairie fires.

We also had a Dodge Weapons carrier of Korean War vintage that was six wheel drive. It came with chains that could be hooked together and almost made it a half track.

My Dad was in the Border Patrol in 1940. He was detailed down to the Clearwater FL area where they had a scare going on about saboteurs being landed from U-Boats. The C

...Coast Guard had one of the first Jeeps to run around on the beach with, and of course managed to stick it in the sand. Since I was a bit of a Jeep nut as a kid, he used to enjoy telling the story. Apparently they got it pushrd out before the tide came in. He also drove a Jeep a lot in the ETO so his enthusiasm for four wheeling was minimal in later years.

...This one-handed typing gets a bit erratic at times. Sorry 'bout that.

Read three issues of the Jeep and Peep comics.
