How much does a coyote resemble a half-grown shepherd?
Dead critter in the median strip yesterday, about five blocks from my house. As I went past I thought, "Coyote", and then re-thought, "Shepherd pup?" Certainly wasn't big enough or hairy enough for a full-grown German Shepherd, and I don't think he had a black saddle. Hate to think of coyotes being in town, though.

Coyotes will be wherever they can find a meal. It's not at all unusual to see them in urban areas.

i just spotted several coyote yesterday in the mountains of western NC...they don't look like dogs to me

Probably coyote. They are very adaptable critters. I have had them walking down the street in my subdivision sniffing from curb to curb. I would normally do something to make sure it would never come back, but right now there are too many yapping rat dogs out making noise all hours of the day and night. Maybe a 'yote or two in the neighborhood is not really a bad thing.

I do not know if the Coyotes in N Florida look the same as in SW Fla but here they look like mangy under fed dogs. Smaller than a German Shepard Dog. Nothing like the Coyotes out West.

Injun say when world comes to end, Coyote will be the last to go.
They are just about as clever as any critter walkin' on 4 legs.

Coyotes look like dogs but at the same time they don't. From a distance or a glancing view, yes they resemble a shepherd. From a close slow look they look like Coyote's, I don't know how else to explain it. A healthy Coyote is a beautiful animal.
To me they kind of resemble a large Fox (in shape) more than a dog really, but they don't have as unique a face as a Fox.

Hunting coyotes enforces natural selection. You get the dumb, slow, or weak. leaving the smart, quick, and strong to breed the super coyote. They love cities and suburbs. Cats and terriers are good eating.

They have them in Central Park in NYC there, needless to say as much as I don't care for coyotes, I prefer them to other occupants in NYC.

Beautiful animals. They could be mistaken for a GSD at a distance. Or a red Cattle Dog. And yes, they don't mind humans. Humans = food.
They used to come right up to my fence. I would listen to them in the early AM.
Haven't found any sign of them inside my fence, but then they cease to be a beautiful animal & are a threat to my dogs.
Though I haven't heard them close lately I still accompany my dogs outside when it's dark and I'm around.

Coyotes somewhat resemble German Shepherds, but not very closely. Even a big male coyote never approaches the size of a typical adult Shepherd. Coyotes have a more elongated, or "pointy" face, bushier tails, somewhat different ears --- a little longer and narrower, I think --- and longer guard hairs, i.e., they're furrier looking.
As to habitat, they're well adapted to urban environments, and hereabouts have attained the same nuisance and pet threat status that raccoons have elsewhere. Seeing them in even fairly intensely developed urban areas should surprise no one ...

A couple of years ago they had one walk into a Subway or Quiznos sandwich shop in the middle of Chicago and climb into the drink cooler. More recently, I saw video of one that had climbed into a city bus for a ride.

One crossed the road about 100 feet ahead of my bicycle the other day, at a dead run, with his tail straight out behind him. He was a beauty, nice coat, full bushy tail. They are not at all rare around here (east suburbs of Saint Paul), but not an everyday occurrence, either.

I live in a heavily wooded northern suburb of St. Paul, a few years ago it wasn't uncommon to see them on the prowl in broad daylight. A few of them were pretty big and resembled a small German Shepard at first glance. At night they would start yipping when the Sheriff would go by with his siren on, let me tell you there were a lot of them. After awhile there were no more rabbits, pheasants, feral cats, etc...

Your first guess on the lineage of this guy would probably be wrong.
He's 1/2 coyote and 1/2 wolf. Spotted in Bisbee, Arizona back in 2006. His owner says he's a very loyal pet, and he keeps him as a guard dog in his motorcycle shop, in the Lowell section of Bisbee.

This is the first photo I saw of my last foster. First thing I thought was "coyote." He was neutered & tail was docked when they picked him up as a stray.
This is another photo of him on his first day with us. He had a lot of "feral" behaviors. No idea how long he had been running loose.

That sure does look like a coyote/Australian Sheperd mix. Not only will he herd the cattle for, he will cull the herd. 
You start mixing those canine genes and there is no telling what you will come up with!

Actually Australian Cattle Dog mix. I'm not the only one who suspects a coyote in the woodpile.
He's since been adopted. He really is a great dog. If he and my own Cattle Dog got along at all (MY dog's fault) I would have had a hard time giving him up.
