I strongly believe in the convergence of the right gun, a price I can live with and some extra $$$ in the bank. Keep in mind that the right price may trump the other two, more so for the right gun. Another great excuse is having boys (16 and 13) you have to start them out right. That being said in order of purchase....

Beretta White Wing 20ga (little guy "out grew" his Jr. size mossberg)
Ruger M77 Mk II stainless in 25-06 left hand action (16yr old shoots southpaw)
Colt 1911 Series 80 Gold Cup (Dad needs one now and then too)
Ruger stainless Blackhawk in .45 colt, that had all the internal work for a Mag Na Port Predator, with none of the cosmetic stuff, found this used while shopping for the grand prize winner below at a price that just about stopped my heart....

Finally the Grand Prize... the 16 year old broke 172 out of 200 at a sporting clays outing last fall much to the joy of Grandpa. Who did what men tend to do on such fine occasions, he bought the lad a Browning Xs 12ga, so he could "keep working at it and hopefully break 180+ the next time." While I admit this gun #5, it was not on my bill so that makes it the Grand Prize.... thanks Dad!

My last 4 guns takes me back about 5 years. At Christmastime I bought a Single Six convertible. It was the other gun I wanted a year or so ago when I bought a basic Ruger Mark III. Before that, it was a P38 that was calling my name from the case, and before that, a Model 60 with a 5" barrel.

Now I'm on the fence between a 4" 586, a 6" Model 29,and a Ruger Bisley Blackhawk in .357 Magnum. My friend hasn't really quoted me a price yet on the 586. He'd rather sell me the 29, but I'm not sure what I'd do with it besides make big noises at the range.

In the meantime, I would really like to find a nicely-priced CZ75. Unfortunately, however, in the last five weeks, I have had to spring for a new refrigerator ($900), $2500 for the vet after Gracie, my wife's toy Aussie, jumped, fell or was pushed out of a moving car and broke her pelvis, and an emergency room bill in an amount as yet undetermined for the shoulder I dislocated last Saturday night. Now there's an unpleasant experience, all the worse because there was no alcohol involved. In any event, it probably adds up to no new gun in the near future.

My gun store tells me what I'm going to buy. I walk in, someone says, "I've got something you can't live without." That's usually all it takes. It doesn't help that my wife is usually with me saying..."You should get that."

Last four?

Smith & Wesson 65-5 "Ladysmith."
Smith & Wesson 22 Combat Masterpiece (five screw)
Colt Official Police MK III 38
Colt Official Police 38 (Marked Treasury Department Secret Service on the backstrap.)

I'm not a pessimist by nature, but my last four gun purchases, all within the past year, have been done in light of "What guns would I want to have, and be able to pass on to my children, if in spite of the
Second Amendment, guns became difficult if not impossible for my children or grandchildren to obtain?

My ammunition purchases have been motivated along the same line.

In Arkansas, the popular calibers of pistol, rifle, and to so extent shotgun ammunition have been very hard to find during the past 3-4 months. The guns are there but the ammunition is hard to find unless you want to shoot FMJ in pistol or #8 birdshot for shotgun. Popular calibers like .30-30, .243, and especially .270 can be found but are high priced.

4013 TSW non-rail NOS (Nov last year)
14-4 6"
FNP 9
19-3 2 1/2"

So, Do you have any rhyme or reason to your gun collecting and What were your last 4 gun purchases?

rags
There really is no rhyme or reason for my purchases. I sell holsters at gun shows every weekend, and always see great deals walking the aisles. If I can pick up a great gun for about half it's usual cost, I grab it. Many of them were not on my want list, but ended up on my have list. Here is what I have picked up since the beginning of the year.

January - NAA 22 Magnum 1-5/8" Barrel
February - S&W 28-2 6" with magna grips
April - Colt Mustang Pocketlite Blue with 2 magazines
April - Uberti 1873 Cattleman 45 Colt, 7-1/2" barrel, blue/case hardened
June - S&W 28-2 6" barrel with target grips
July - S&W 66-2 2-1/2" barrel with magna grips
July - S&W 60-7 with magna grips in original blue box with all papers
July - S&W 64-4 4" barrel with nice wood aftermarket grips (might be Ahrends)
August - S&W 27-3 5" FBI Commemoritive with display box, papers, tools, and providence.

The only ones I was really looking for was the 28-2 (which I wanted in 4"...still looking) and the Uberti. I guess when a good deal comes by, you have to jump on it.

I missed March and May, but it looks like I made up for it in July.

Six of these have been since I joined the Fourm. You guys are killing me.

I never go looking for anything in particular. I just keep a few "lists" in my mind.

One "list" is just my general interests. I'm always on the look out for military rifles.

My next "list" is what just happens to be a bee in my bonnet at the present time.

Right now, I'm on the look out for: Beretta .22 semi auto handguns, anything Beretta, anything S&W semi auto, S&W M10, M64 or J frame, Ruger SP101 snubbies. I always will always pick up another AR lower.....if the price and quality is right.

It is more fun to shop gunshows when you never know what you might bring home.

I always surprise myself!

When occasionally bored, some have a drink and talk to the bartender. :-)
I shared my boredom with my friend FFL dealer this Spring.
He said: "Have you looked into 3rd generation S&W's?"
So I looked. The result was 3913, 5906, 4566, and
as of yesterday, the massive early 4506.
Feel much better now! :-)

The two 9mm have the post-recall factory grips.
Not sure if the recall also applied to .45's, and if so,
is it advisable to upgrade the grips.

Pretty close to this. And almost everything I buy is a carry gun, or could be.

Last year I bought a few handguns... a 627, Ruger Mk. II, 24-4, 17-1. Ended up not keeping the 627. Thought I wanted it, but after I got it and started shooting it, just didn't find it really suited my needs. Would like to find a factory nickle plated 4" 19-2 and a Colt Ser.70 like I had in seminary. Am now looking for a Colt 1911/1911-A1. Have some money saved and will buy a nice one when I see it... probably a late 60's era Colt or maybe a very nice Ser. 70. Have thought about a U.S.G.I. 1911/1911-A1, but I don't know enough about them to be able to tell what to look for or how to tell if one has been altered or rearsenaled at a correct govt. facility.

With me its not so much "rhyme or reason" as it is "feast or famine"! If I see a gun I want I think back to the last time I ate top ramen for a month & if I'm willing to do it again. By the way, did you know you can buy top ramen by the case at Wally World?

I use both Rhyme and Reason.

If it rhymes with "fun" I have a reason.

Well when I was single it seem I use to buy guns every other month. These days I've been doing more trading.

Last guns I've bought/traded for:
S&W 15-3, 2" snub
S&W 586-1, 4"
Ruger Redhawk Alaskan (traded my 9mm M&P for)
Ruger 10/22 (traded a Savage bolt action for)

My last five:
two ( count 'em; two) Shansei Chinese copies of the Mauser broomhandle in 45 ACP.
One Chinese copy of the Mauser broomhandle, in 7.63mm caliber.
A Hammerli-Walther Olympia in 22 short.
A S&W 539 nickeled, they only made about 1800 of these.

I passed on a S&W 52-A for $4800. I'd have given it serious consideration if I'd had 48 Benjamins in my pocket.

My last four this year: S&W 10-5, 2 inch. Kimber, Stainless Raptor II, 5 inch. S&W 18-2, 4 inch and a pre 29 5 screw 6-1/2inch. Nothing rhymes and my wife said I don't need a reason and I believe her.

I only buy guns that I have a current use for, that I can foresee holding on to for the rest of my life, that are of heirloom quality, and worth passing down to children/grandchildren.

Last purchase was a Colt 1911 Series 70 Reissue; blued. Previous purchase was a S&W 442.

I never used to have rhyme or reason and picked up what caught my fancy then. Now I've traded some of those same guns off and mainly look for S&W revolvers and 1911s. Since I retired my spendable income has dropped and I've mainly been trading guns now.
My last two were a Ruger 1911 Commander size and Sig 1911-22.
I also brought out my Kimber Ultra CDP I hadn't shot in years so almost like getting a new gun.
I'll probably stay on the 1911 kick for awhile as S&Ws are hard to find here. My dealer had a no lock Scandium J frame in 22 LR that I had some interest in but no good reason for buying so passed on it.
I have some S&Ws I'm still looking for but chances of finding them are slim but it's about the hunt really anyway.

I like the older ones. Lats three acquired this year are:
S&W Model 2, 38 SA.

Stevens 414 Armory , 22 RF single shot. Basically a Favorite on steroids, with a larger 44 action.

S&W 39-2.

The 39 is the only semi auto I have ever owned. At least it's an older model S&W semi, relatively speaking.

Not really any rhyme or reason for me. For me it's all about a convergence of time resources and opportunity. When they come together I buy guns.

Default What gun next?

There never seems to be a pattern on what or when I buy.

I am a nut for S&W 357's so when a nice one comes along I cant hardly watch it go by. Its a weakness I have.

My only fear is that when I die my wife might sell them for what I told her I paid for them.

I'm glad to see someone else said the same to the wife but that's a hole other thread. Do what I did find a friend that also has guns or men toys and make a pack with him. Who ever dies first you get to pick one of his toys and he tells and makes sure they sell for the right price.

Absolutely, when I walk by the display case, one will call my name and it will be louder than the others in the case.

The more plaintiff the call, the more it begs me to rescue it from the case and take it home the more likely I will respond.

Pretty simple huh?

I know zilch on them but was wondering if those Chinese Broomhandles were vintage pieces? or are they fairly new made?

No r&R here either. Sometimes its just a matter of luck that I find what i want and actually have the money to buy it--the other times its buying something that is definitely in mind-likemy last twp purchases. 1) STG 44/22 and the RIA .GI .45 this year. Another I pan getting by August--is a "Rough Rider" SSA 22 made by Heritage Arms. I fell in love with the first one I saw-was oing to get it along with the RIA,but it was sold the week before the gun show here.

The only 2 guns that are even on my radar right now are a full size 59 series (like a 915, a 5906 or a 5904) to go with my 6906 and a Shorty .40 (which is already waaay out of my budget) to complement my 4006.

If I was starting over again I would have limited myself to compatible weapons such as the 59 series 3rd gens. That way I'd only have to buy 1 type of spare magazine and one caliber of ammunition. Same rationale with the 4006 and the Shorty .40

I have no rhyme or reason to buy a gun. I now take my hearing aid out when I go into a gun shop so I can't hear them calling for me to take the home. But the last year I have bought a S&W M&P 9mm compact a S&W M&P compact 40cal A Ruger LCR 38+p and a Ruger Mini 14 and just in the last month a S&W model 29-2 and a S&W 642 air weight for my wife. A couple years ago I was on a 686 kick, I bought a 4 '' then a 2 " then a 3 inch. I have started attending 12 step meetings to help develop a method of controlling myself when it comes to buying gun. For a while I was addicted to stainless steel revolvers and semi autos. Now all I think about are those gun with the smooth deep blue color and deep brown stocks.

For me it was the 624 w/6.5" bbl in 44 special, then 24-3 4" bbl 44 special. Then 24-3 3" bbl kinda slowed down after that. Latest is a K38 which still has to have her day at the range. Frank

Pretty much exhausted my list. Guess I have to think of a new list. Maybe start with that Colt SAA 45 LC 5.5" I've always wanted.

There are a few patterns going on with me. Some of them I suppose even I don't see.

I'll admit to wanting to snag the popular guns. The not so subconscious thought being if everyone sees their value then it will be a better tool and better investment. {27-2 &28-2}

Before that I was looking for the best medium to large caliber revolver for concealed carry. This were I was/am aiming at the K frame guns like the 66/19 and L frame 585/686 snubs and three inch versions.

All those J frame loyal owners lead me to eight or ten neat guns. {35, 36's, 642, 649, 640s, 60s, and a 12-2}

For more than a year I was looking for the hi capacity defensive revolver, the m627.

One purchase leads to another and that was the case with me being blown away by the vision of an early, highly modifies, boxed and papered model 629. Sitting in a chair in the lgs I saw that huge bored beauty and I was smitten. My own fire breathing dragon.

Other hooks that grab me are compensated barrels and performance center revolvers.

Ninety five percent S&W has left room for a few Colts and one Kimber (my one and only 1911)

That so many forum members spoke so highly of their affection for the .22 caliber lead me to that area. {a new 617, model 35-1, 617 w/scope & a Colt pre-Woodsman}

The real theme is a passion for Smith revolvers.

Nothin' like resusitatin' a zombie.
I have bought 3 Colts scince January. No particular reason, but they are ones on my preferred list of things to get while the gettin's good.
2 of 'em in the last 3 weeks.
I am not losing my mind. I have simply learned that if it is there when you are, and the fiduciary considerations are met, you better grab it. It will be way more cost if you wait, and you might not find another one real soon. None of 'em have to be museum quality; just decent shooters.

Well, the last one I bought was 1995...but...it's got to be good - no junk please. I like a good shooter accurate and well made - last I bought was a 686 with adjustable front sight that I could use to put some serious rounds through so as to hone my skills. Got to be nice and shiny as I like to polish them and look at them. A bit of extravagance maybe and indulgence - my Freedom Arms 454 Casull Premier Grade - top quality, awesome performance, accuracy - worth the money as built up to a standard. shame I had to send it to Belgium so as to not give it to the government, but hey, ho...

Now, as the job I currently have gives me a fair bit of disposable income, am thinking about taking up shooting again - on my wishlist is a 50BMG rifle costing say, $7k. I would also need to buy a car as it's a minimum 200 mile round trip to a range where I could actually fire the thing...but I am not going through all the rigmarole of a UK firearms certificate to buy a 22 rimfire that's for sure...

I have two criteria for buying a gun.

1) It is a gun that I expect to enjoy owning and shooting

2) I can reasonably expect to get back 90% of the purchase price if I were to sell it right away.

My latest purchase was a .243 DPMS Lite Hunter in Post Ban configuration:
