Tracking numbers and the ATF
I was attempting to acquire a revolver from a Gunbroker site.
Seller declines to provide tracking numbers and claims that the ATF has requested he not supply tracking numbers on gun shipments.
I had never heard such a claim before and can think of no reason for this to be the case.
Seller would otherwise appear to be an established legitimate dealer but I will not buy from anyone under these terms as virtually all dealers, large and small, provide tracking numbers on a (more or less) consistent basis.
Anyone else ever encounter such a claim?

Definite pasture aroma about that. Sounds like a guy who would lie to you about other things too.

An FFL initially didn't want to give me a tracking number on something I shipped, giving this as the reason. They ended up giving it to me when I protested that my buyer expected shipping confirmation as part of the transaction.
Don't know about the validity of "the ATF asked me to" as the real reason, although it's possible it is. It's a handy excuse to just blame a government agency for something. Believable, though. Lord knows if there's something stupid being done with relation to guns it's entirely plausible to think the government's got a hand in it somehow.

A quick call to the ATF would answer this question. However, I'm calling BS. This is definitely one to steer clear of.
When dealing with the internet, it's always best to let it go rather than deal with a suspicious seller. I won't deal with any seller that won't give me the tracking number.

If this is true then it would appear that the ATF feel that there are firearm theft rings operating within UPS, FedEx etc. Either that or they think that the systems are so easily fooled that you could change the delivery address to a Mailboxes Etc box that you have under a bogus name and obtain guns illegally.

how would it matter?
Not like a tracking number would tell anyone what was in the package.
As a poster above stated, smells like cow pasture.

Don't believe it is that simple to reroute a package. A few years ago I needed to have a Mallory distributor modified for a car I built. It was return shipped from their factory to my address and zip code but label was mistakenly marked UT instead of VT. After tracking it to UT then TN to VA to WV and was finally found back in VA. Talked to the UPS depot and tried to explain the mix-up and ask to just send it to the listed zip code. Was informed that only the sender could change it. Quick call to my contact at Mallory with the info, ten minutes later he called me back, UPS had already loaded it on the truck and headed it back to Mallory in NV.

I purchased a rifle from a guy in OK...He put in a box addressed to me in SC...He failed to take the original UPS label off the box he received from ID...As I watched the tracking , the box made it to Greensboro ,NC, turned around and went toward ID. Somewhere on it's way to ID, the correct label side of the box was turned up, and it headed back to Greensboro,NC....
NOPE...you guessed it , the ID label got scanned in NC and off it went, headed west again... I finally got it stopped and headed in the right direction with a call to an 800 number.. They had to verify with the shipper, but all was eventually straightened out...Took more than 10 days to get from OK to SC.... Just one of those things...

How long ago was this fiasco? The older tracking number should have shown as "Delivered" and they shouldn't have used it.
