Default USG Security Clearance - Identity Theft

Well, isn't this ironic.... Just got a letter from OPM ( US Office of Personnel Management ) indicating they got hacked and my info was stolen.

I had a USG security clearance for my previous employer.

The OPM was a target of a malicious cyber intrusion carried out against the U.S. Government, which resulted in the theft of background investigation records.

SO, the folks doing the background investigations can't even protect their own system. Their solution is to give everyone that was compromised a three-year "credit and identity monitoring service".

Last year it was my records at the VA...now this.

Got one of those letters about 2 months ago. Makes one wonder about their security.

Actually Tradewind36, this is the second letter. My wife (works for the VA) got one a couple or three months ago telling her she was one of the bazillion government employees who had been the victims of the hacking of a government website.

She was offered, and took, free credit and ID monitoring.

Then, last week she got another letter. Same thing except this was another hack job.

Seems the agencies would learn after the first one and harden their walls against another attack. But ....

They're still running behind on the letters. Anyone who has ever had a security clearance background check conducted by OPM had their information hacked by the Chinese in the spring.

Yep. When the VA had a breach due to a laptop going missing, my data was on it. When Tricare had a breach, my data was exposed. Now the OPM. I guess they will be providing free credit monitoring for life when you add up all these breaches. I guess the only one that hasn't affected me was the Ashley Madison hack! Good thing too, 'cause while I collect guns the wife collects cast iron frying pans. That free credit monitoring would have been cut short!

The breach happened months ago, and has been heavily covered. The letters are trickling out at a shamefully slow rate. I have also heard of current active service personnel not getting the letters, but their spouses and kids getting them.

Got my letter about a month ago. ''Twas not reassuring when the credit monitoring service informed me my info was being sold on the black web. Any resemblance to OPM is, of course, coincidental.

Maybe we should hire the Chinese to protect our data, since they're the ones who know how to hack it.

I've received a letter for my current employment several months ago and one two months ago for the old information from before I retired from the Air Force.

My wife also received a letter a month ago for her info before she retired from the Air Force.
