Default Weed Eater Lawn Mower

I am looking for an inexpensive ,small push mower.I just saw a small Weed Eater mower at Wal-Mart for $125 which is about all I can afford. It did have a Briggs and Stratton engine which I like;anybody here have an experience with Weed Eater mowers? What do you think?

IMHO, it's junk. Might look at a pawn shop - they sometimes have good ones for reasonable prices.

If it's this one, it's not bad. The ez height adjusters are a nice feature. Beats doing a bolt a wheel. Lightweight at about 50 lbs. I googled the engine and it is used in several other mowers that look the same. Probably all made 1 place and badged differently. I wouldn't buy this for heavy use but as long as you mow frequently I expect it would do fine. Put it through its paces early so if it's not up to snuff you can return it.

For the price of a tank of gas it's probably worth it.

With these things it's usually one way or the other... you'll have it for years without any trouble or it will have problems soon after you start using it. I bought the cheapest gas Weed Eater trimmer I could find (refurbished unit at the Sears service center for $36) It looked like new other than some scratches on the bottom so I can only guess that it didn't work well or at all for the original buyer. In any event, I've had for a few years and it works just fine. I have a Honda mower but that was about $600. I have a fair amount of grass to cut and wasn't going to further aggravate myself with a troublesome or underpowered mower when I already hate to cut the grass.

It all depends on how much lawn you have to cut and what type of grass. I see you are in Al. If your grass grows half as much as it does in Fl you will not be happy with that mower.

I can relate with not wanting to spend much, but for just a little more you can get some better.

Thanks everybody!!The engine I am familiar with so I can work on it if necessary. The one pictured in the above link is it and yes I do like the wheel adjustment method better than the cheap old way.
This mower will be only used for small jobs or for the wife if she wants to cut some grass.I have a Toro self propelled walk behind mower that I use for most of my yard.

Those used to have a red deck and cost $99. I used one for around 15 years until the chassis rotted out. Check out the Western Autoor other places-you may still come accross a $99 one.

Find one of the later two stroke Lawn Boy mowers with the electronic ignition....not the four stroke. It will have to be a used one as I think they now only sell mowers with the four stroke engines to meet pollution requirements or some silly reason. The old two strokes are about six horse, plenty of power, easy on gas, easy to maintain, and will run forever given decent treatment and using good two stroke oil to mix the gas...and no oil changes to mess with. I ran one for twenty years after buying it used and only bought a new Lawn Boy two stroke because it was the last year of production for two strokes and I wanted to be set for another trouble free twenty plus years. In my humble opinion, the newer Lawn Boy four strokes don't have the trouble free longevity and quality of the older two strokes and you should be able to find a nice used Lawn Boy two stroke for less money than a short lived Wally world four stoke that will drive you nuts. I put gas in my Lawn Boy two stroke, after sitting all winter, and it started on the second pull and I've been doing that for the past 25 years. I always hated the sound and smoke from two stroke engines but finally caved in and bought one after watching the results my father in law got from his old Lawn Boy many years ago. I think it was older than me at the time.. The later ones are fairly quiet and as long as I use a good oil, like the Lawn Boy ash free oil, there's no smoke, and no carbon to clean from the exhaust...they just keep going like the energizer bunny. And, they don't starve for oil and throw a rod from mowing steep hillsides like the cheap four strokes.

I have a cheap Murray with B&S engine in the same class as the $100+/- mowers they sell at Wally World. I got it used several years ago. A couple years back it needed serious service and repair and I didn't have the tools. The guys at my local repair shop told me I could get a new version at WM for nearly the $90 I'd spend fixing up my el cheapo. My response: "I'd rather see my money go to a local company than see my dollars go to some international conglomerate and see another push mower in the dump."

I started it for the first time this season yesterday. Pulled it out from storage; fresh gas, new oil, prime: started on first pull.

You might want to check the local classified ads as well. I bought a 1 year old craftsman mower for $85 from a retired gent who collected old mowers an refurbed them. Turned out his idea of refurbing was a good cleanup. Put a $10 carb kit in it last week, starts with one pull now!

"Weed Eater Lawn Mower?"

While working in the UK a few years ago... I became acquainted with the FlyMo. It's a very popular mowing contraption that seems to work well on small yards (gardens) with less dense grass.

It's a "hovercraft" lawnmower that doesn't have wheels.

This might be just the ticket for you. This looks like the love child of a WeedEater and my Toro mower.

Not sure about Wally Worlds policy, but Menards would not return a weedeater I purchased because I had filled the gas tank. I ran it once and decided I didn't like it, drained the tank and repackaged, but no dice on the return.

The hovercraft type mowers were around back in the mid 60's and I tried one of them that was made by Toro. You have to be happy with one cutting height and that would vary with the thickness of the grass and how much the "lift" changed because of more or less skirt blowby from dense or thin grass. It worked pretty good on very smooth even lawns that had consistent grass density, but they were a complete flop when the lawn is the least bit rough or uneven....turns it into a tiller...

I bought the cheapest Murry WM had about 17 years ago when we bought our house. After the down payment, moving costs, re-decorating costs, repair costs, etc. I just didn't have much money for a mower. I figured I'd use it for a couple of years and buy a "good" one. Well, I've gone through two "good" ones for the front yard, but I still use that old Murry in the back yard where I'm likely to hit a large stick or tree root or rock or toy or something else that would bend a shaft on a "good" mower. I clean the carb and plug and change the oil every two or three years, and she's good to go.
