Default Thanks for all the info

Thanks to this forum I have gotten a lot of info on guns. I retired from the NYPD after 20 years. My gun was always just a tool, that I was required to carry. I always thought I took better care of my guns than most cops, but I guess I was kidding myself.
From this forum, I learned how important it was to change recoil springs. My service weapon, which I carried for 8 out of my 20 years was a 5946. I just recently changed the recoil spring, this was the first time. It was an inch shorter than the new one. It now chambers a round much smoother. The job never told us to change springs, if you had a problem with a gun on qualification, I guess they would have the Dept gunsmith change the spring. They never informed us to change them. They used to make us clean the guns, always with a bronze bristle brush, I guess it was overkill to make sure we had clean weapons. I now know I can run a swab with cleaning solvent through the barrel until it comes out clean.
One question I do have is regarding my cs45 which is tda. I am used to revolvers and dao only semi autos. I assume it is safe to use the decocker to drop the hammer on a chambered round, then carry it with the safety off, like a dao?

I am sure to most people I sound like an idiot, but I am willing to embarrass myself by asking this question. Thanks.

I always use the decocker that way and carry with the safety off, BUT always have that pistol pointed in a safe direction when I drop the hammer. It's a mechanical part, always subject to fail at the wrong time.

I'm sure you know about safety with a firearm tho.

Thanks Hiram, I always point it in a safe direction, I am paranoid about firing off an unexpected round. I figured once you chambered the round, decocked it you could remove the safety and carry it like my dao cs9. (no safety) I just wanted to make sure. From reading this forum I have found that I have a lot to learn.

27145,
Swell to meet other guys who've been on the job in this Forum.

I spent 34 years as Federal LEO/Agent and as a Municipal Chief of Police. For 27 of those years I was also a Police Firearms Instructor. I was fortunate that I got to go to all the parts changer schools and I know which parts and springs to change and when.

Lots of Manuals out there for those who don't know and they are good reading.

I been retired eight years and there's nothing as good as being retired. Shoot, travel and do what I want. Every day is Saturday, except Sunday and then it Saturday all over again.

Rule 303

"The only dumb question is the one you dont ask" I dont always agree to this obviously, but in your case it applies. You would be amazed at how many times I have been asked that question by very knowledgable gun people. It IS kinda nerve racking until you test it a few times.

Rule 303, I'm retired also ,but not LEO, state DOT/32 years. One thing I've tried to figure out. Last year I took a trip out to Arizona and at first I called it vacation. But how do ya go on vacation when you're retired?

I finally decided to call it a road trip.
