Default Who has a B.O.B? (bug out bag)

I recently decided to purchase a BOB and thought this would be an informative thread for our fellow members. The kit I bought came of an internet sales site that shall remain nameless. What's in my bag?

Nothin like that.... Me, I try to figure how much I dont need by going out and experiencing it. Bunch of times a year, I test my theory.

I don't currently have a bug out bag but have been thinking about putting one together. I guess a good place to start would be with considering how much weight you are willing to carry. I'd imagine start thinking a back country hunting trip geared toward survival and go from there. Thing is that weight can add up real quick and if you have to leave your vehicle depending on the terrain all bets are off. My early hunting packs would weigh in at about 18 lbs and I humped that for exactly one season and started paring it down so that now it weighs just over 10 lbs and that's with my 2 liter camelbak.

You guys who think you are going to just throw a few things in a bag and go live off the land are delusional. If your current abode is in or near an urban area, you need to relocate to a more rural area NOW, not when the feces hits the fan.

Just a thought on the BushMaster knife, 420 stainless won't hold an edge and can become brittle from repeated pounding. I'd go with carbon steel or one of the more exotic stainless models. Tougher to sharpen but might work out better in the long run. Look at Cold Steel's line of Kukri's. And I don't plan on running, so I don't have a b.o.b. I do have several kits with shelter, water, food, and first aid. At home, in the cars, and at work.

Default My survival kit

I have a water tight pelican case approx. 8" x 18" x 21". It goes in my boat when it goes into the water. It is loaded with what I figure would help me survive for a week if I were to break down or get weathered in away from home.

It is a float itself & I have added extra rope & hand holds should I end up in the water with it.

A flair kit & fire starter are high on my list. A tarp for shelter & dry clothes + rain gear are there too. A hand held VHS radio is included, then basics such as food, brownie film, & a flash light, etc.

As far as "Bug Out", I can't go farther out, I'm already 1/2 way to nowhere.

Jim

In the event of a breakdown of society, where there's complete anarchy, we're digging in, not bugging out. All my firepower is here, and since we're on the edge of the water, they can only come from one direction! I have like-minded neighbors who I trust, thankfully.

However, we do have "tsunami bags". My wife and I each have one here at the house, and each of our vehicles has one. We could camp for 3-4 days with any of them. We live on the edge of an estuary that meets the Pacific about a half mile from here, so we consider it important that we have a solid plan and decent supplies. It's about a 20 minute hike to high ground (you don't want to drive!), and in the event we aren't together when an alert happens,(which will probably be the case if it's daytime) we know exactly where to meet. We have 16 mile walkie talkies if that's not possible. Yes, the batteries are stored seperate from the radios, in a zip lock bag with instructions for my wife!

I have two types. One is a commercial civilian 3-day type from 'beprepared.com'. It goes in the trunk of the car whenever we travel and otherwise resides nearby. The others are my 1-day and 3-day DMAT deployment bags with uniforms, MREs, 2 weeks worth of meds, tools of the trade and stuff you need for living in an austere environment until the cavalry arrives. Those get used periodically, the civilian one is just-in-case.

Like others have said, I will stay in my current residence as long as possible. But, should I have to "bug out", I do have a bag packed with a few essentials.

Bug out can also mean a temporary displacement caused by severe weather, a fire, a haz-mat emergency, etc. Therefore, I have a bag packed with short and long term survival in mind. It includes:

Stuff for building a fire:

Blastmatch and tinder. (Very cool item that works well.)
Waterproof matches.
Several Bic lighters.
Package of 8 tea candles.

Extra clothes:

3 pairs underwear and socks.
1 pair of denim jeans.
2 shirts. (one long sleeve, one short sleeve)
1 pair of sneakers. (I will be wearing my hiking boots)
1 large towel.
1 small wash cloth.
1 pair of heavy gloves.

Survival stuff:

Survival book.
1800 rds. .22LR ammo
2 space blankets.
Pads, pencils, pens, markers.
100 ft of paracord.
M-9 bayonet.
Pocket knife (Swiss Army)
Small axe.
Crank powered radio.
Whistle.
First aid supplies.
2 double rolls of toilet paper.
Multi-tool (leatherman type)
Water purification tablets.
Can opener. Bottle opener.
Surefire flashlight.
Full size flashlight.
Extra batteries.
Bug spray.
Fishing kit. (Line, hooks, dobbers, lures, etc.)
Compact binoculars.
Toiletry kit (toothbrush/toothpaste, meds, etc.)
Copy of important documents. (Birth Certificate, licenses and permits, etc.)
Fanny pack that holds two empty 24oz. water bottles along each side of main pouch. (empty at this time.)

All of the above is already in the bag, which is a very well made High Sierra 59601 Long Trail 90 backpack.

http://www.ebags.com/product/high-si...ion-pack/88526

If I need to hit the road, I will add:

XD-45 on person, with two extra mags in mag carrier on belt.

4 loaded extra mags for the XD will go in the bag.

Model 617 will go in the bag. (holster is already in bag.)

Savage MK II FVT .22LR bolt action rifle.

I will have in my pocket, credit cards, DL, medical cards, cash.

Will grab tent and sleeping bag on the way out the door.

Granted, all this weighs a bit, but hopefully I will be able to keep my vehicle for a while. If not, I will have to lose a few items along the way.

Bingo. All you guys making fun of my BOB are going to be sorry when you're standing on your front lawn in your underwear in the middle of the night watching the firemen putting out what's left of your house. Put a change of clothes, some old shoes, a toothbrush, extra car keys, and a little cash in a backpack under the bed just in case.

My wife and I are too old to be doing E&E. I have been storing in place for years,

I can hunt the woods behind the house, I can fish the unused reservoir in the front of the house and when I run out of gas for the generator I can use bleach in the water to turn it into drinking water.

I’m also prepared to make my last stand right here.

Sir, back when I used to commute, I carried a daypack full of things that I thought might be helpful if the car broke down, I got stranded at work, whatever. (Mundane emergencies can kill you just as dead as dramatic ones.) I also kept a small stash of non-perishable food in my desk, as well as tools and heavier gear in the car. That stuff came in handy more than once.

I still keep the cars equipped and add the "just in case" bag for longer trips. Just seems prudent.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

I keep one in each of my vehicles. Ever since SERE school I have been a survival fan. Some of my buddies and I have a new tradition where we trek out into the wilderness and hang out for a week living off the land... taking nothing but the most simple supplies. We do take food, phones, and guns but they stay locked away.. only to be used in case we run into any problems.

If you're concerned about having to survive in the wilderness I highly suggest doing some research on North American edible plants.

My basic bag for in the truck:

- Fixed Blade Knife
- Medical Kit
- Nylon / Parachute Cord
- Water Bag
- Purification tablets
- Emergency Candle
- Compass
- Flint & Striker
- Waterproof Matches
- Hack saw blade / Wire saw
- Tinder in water proof bag or container
- Safety pins
- Single edge razor
- Snare wire
- Whistle
- Signal mirror
- Fishing kit
- Multi-tool

Sipowitz gave instructions on this very subject in a similar thread several years ago. I made it my own.

A Vespa, a j frame and a Snickers bar.

I'm sort of old. My wife is handicapped. I'm not leaving her behind. We'll do the best we can right here.

Besides. It's a long way to anywhere to "bug out" to.

Katrina taught us the value of kits like these. Each of our vehicles is so equipped and the house, if we decide to shelter in place, has LOTS of food, water, meds, etc.

One thing I did not note on those kind enough to list their supplies, you might want to think about detailed topo maps of your area. During evacs from almost any area, you will find roads to be almost at a standstill for hours/days. While I would be VERY reluctant to abandon a vehilce, you never know...kind of the reason you have the kit in the first place. So knowing the roads, rivers, streams, bayous, etc on your route might be a handy thing to have.

Just a thought.

My "kit" is too long to detail here in the time I have, but it's well thought out and can keep anyone in that vehicle alive for over a week, and it's portable to boot.

Knowledge will displace a lot of the gear listed. Experience will take some more off your list.

Going out Fiddleheading in a bit. Grand Kids are going Smelting, tonight, out back to a pond outfall. Did you know, lots of folks die of starvation...right next to a foodsource?

I am very, very lucky to live where I do. Out here in the Ozark Mountains the foraging is very good, and the people that live down in my neck of the woods are the best. I have a basic BOB for traveling, but nothing that could last very long.
Hunker down and defend is my plan. I flat out love deer meat anyways. Couple of springs within walking distance, lots of cover.
Man, yer bag must weigh a ton. Sound pretty good though, if you had to flee the city or something like that. Hopefully you never will.
Peace,
gordon

I have one but don't know why I'd have to use it. We do't have hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis or any other natural disasters. In the summer we may have a tornado or two within a 100 mile radius but they're very localized. My main worry is if terrorists should hit the three nuclear power stations in Arizona, we might be under the fallout in a day or so. In this area, the most important survival item is water, and it would be almost impossible to carry enough of it to keep you alive for very long.

Default Blending into an Urban setting kit and gear

In a bug out situation people will not be ready and wearing an alice pack is asking to be a target. I use to do some work in the downtown library and saw the guys who stayed at the homeless shelter. They were packing gear and could not leave packs in the library. I thought that a mesh pocketed vest under a jacket or a long jacket (not a trench coat but maybe a boattail) with added internal pockets would allow packing gear without sticking out like a sore thumb. Other posts I have read suggest tennis racket carriers, gym bags, maybe even a guitar case (loved the movie desperado). Any thoughts at putting bug out contents in a non pack format. What would you be sure to carry. (Remember the **** that Rambo went through)
A clean track suit and a gym bag really worked for one homeless guy. He looked great.
Also I have seen wire nets that through hikers on the AT use to lock packs to trees if they have to camp so the locals don't sneak in while they are sleeping and lift their gear.

I'm way behind the game and know it. The wife and I are just starting out and things are tight. But we are working towards this front on several areas. We are working on developing our emergency losing power situation, spare food, water, fuel, etc. I want to put together a get home bag and first aid kit for each vehicle. BOB, that I'm still up in the air on, most likely plan will be to head out to my parents place in the middle of nowhere. I did like the idea of a poster to have a bag under the bed in case of house fire.

Default Get me home bag

As I’m a city kid, who breaks out in hives, if I get more than 200 yards away from concrete and an electrical outlet, I see no need to spend any effort or money for something I would never need, cuz, I ain’t going to die a painful death hiding in the woods. So if the stuff ever hits the fan, this old man is heading for home. I do though keep a get me home bag in the car: two flashlights, first aid kit, $$, two packs cigarettes, lighter, .357 Magnum, and one reload.

Like others I got a BIH, (bug in house) ain't going anywhere too old to go. Too much to move anyway, especially firepower, you know how heavy ammo is.

Everything mentioned so far plus nice comfortable bed, roof over me, fresh eggs, deer, cows and horses to eat if necessary.

One thing I don't see anyone mentioning is a multi powered radio, need to know what's going on, and with all the solar lights people have in their yards there will be plenty of batteries.

I have 3 bags but nothing in them yet. Being in WI it is going to very on what time of the year it is and if something is happening so fast that I don't have time to pack the bags I am likely not making it far with 2 very young kids and a wife with a bad back. My option will probably have to be to dig in. If I use a pack it will be for going out and collecting supplies and food for short periods of time. I envy those who live in the middle of no where.

I don't have one, but it's not a bad idea.
Living in the Midwest we don't have natural disasters that last very long. I keep my truck full of gas and three five gallon cans of gas so I can just drive out of here.
Just this year, I added enough cangoods and water to last a week or two without leaving home.
I did buy a couple of police parkas from Galls for $14 and threw them under the seat in the truck (sill in package) for a winter emergency. I'm not sure if that makes me a prepper or a mall ninja?

If the EMP scare becomes a real threat then I'm screwed. Only those "bicycle gangs" mobile enough to scavenge, brutal enough to pillage, will survive.

I am not worried about a zombie apacolipse happening. But more along the line of natural disaster or being stuck at work for 24 hrs.

I keep a butane backpacking stove and canister, Mountain house freeze dried foods. They blow MRE's out of the water with taste, weight and shelf life. Packets of water.

Wool is a good friend of mine and is in the bag. Fire steel and tinder. FAK well stocked with quick clot and a CAT tourniquet. A good headlamp and Paracord. A small camp camp axe and a Mora knife. I keep the pack at around 25 pounds in case I have to hump several miles.

I built a vest. Started with a fishing vest and a list of what I wanted to accomplish. I could do it in warm weather. The cold weather scenario, all I could do was freeze. As for the person with the gym bag, it still says TARGET. A cheap rusty car is the best escape. Second would be a Pick-up disguised as a Electric Company Truck, coveralls, and a hard had with the right logo. Police road blocks will probably let you through. Private road blocks may or may not, but will most likely let you go. Ivan

What would cause a person to leave home with a bag of stuff? Why would you leave your home to be on the run?
