While Daniel Boone gets the credit for opening up the Ohio Territories (Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, West Virginia and Kentucky) for settlement, it was Simon Kenton who should get most of the credit. I am in the process of reading the book The Frontiersmen by Allen W. Eckert, from which I am gaining my appreciation for Kenton.
The book is a "narrative" according to the author, but reads like a novel. Supposedly everything in the book is researched to the hilt and even has chapter notes and sources for much of the history. Don't let this scare you away from this great story.
The Simon Kenton Home Page is here: Simon Kenton Home Page
Simon Kenton's story and that of the famous Indian leader Tecumseh are woven into a chronological history of the Frontiersman. I finally understand why Tecumseh was so feared! I have learned more American frontier history form this book than any other book I have read.
Thought I would pass on my thoughts to you. If you are in to America's history, but prefer to get the story in novel form, this is a book for you. Good Reading!

Yep ....... I read this very book many years ago. It is just as you said, one of the best accounts of eastern frontier history ever written (IMO).

A great read and I recommend it to anyone interested in the history of the "Ohio/Kentucky" frontier.

Yeah, Simon Kenton was one helluva man. I've read The Frontiersman a couple of times and highly recommend it. I live in the general area he roamed and I expect if I'd lived back then we woulda hung out. First rule of roadies when in bear or indian country is to have one you can outrun. :D

I read the whole Simon Kenton series by Eckert 20 years ago it seems like, I loved them, I outta read them again this summer...

Alan Eckert's That Dark and Bloody River is the definitive popular history of the Ohio Valley. He also wrote A Sorrow in our Heart, a biography of Tecumseh. His nonfiction is as good as his historical fiction.

I've read the book several times. It's a great read. According to at least one genealogist, I have an ancestor in the book. I won't spoil it by telling you which one.

The author has also written the same story from the Indian point of view. I believe it is called "Sorrow of the Heart".

Another revisionist Hero. You guys really need to learn the real history of this Country....

Hey giz, there's always someone who need to pee in the pool. Apparently you have designated yourself as the one. If you don't like the subject move on, go hang out with Jane Fonda.

Do you also teach manners? Cause you're really not very good at it.:p

No problem.....

Whatever the current thinking, you should always go with the the paplum you have been spoonfed for generations.

Heck, so should all the kids in the public school systems believe 100 % in what their teachers preach. They cannot be questioned.

Wetzel?.... Really.....

Equal to Idolizing ..... Sherman and his March to the Sea.

Contract Killers, both. Lincoln authorized one, I despise the other, more

I agree that he rates right up there with Wetzel, but his accomplishments overshadowed Wetzel. They were both great Americans.

Can we learn the REAL history from you? Do you have better sources than Eckert had? Or were you there?

The student is ready - appear, Teacher!

Don't just throw out a couple one liners and retreat, Giz. How was Simon Kenton wrongly portrayed? Should the white man have stayed out of the Ohio River Valley? Were Lewis and Clark a bunch of frauds, too?

I actually appreciate the dates the members join dates on those responding.
