I grew up with a retired Navy CPO for a father and so I had all my haircuts on base. I joined soon as I graduated from high school and haircuts continued to be courtesy of the US Navy...ship's barbours. I never had anything but a "regulation" haircut until I got out at age 25. I went to a local shop that was owned by a couple who became friends over the last 20 years. The lady became sick and had to have surgery and left the business and sold the shop a few months ago. So, for the last few months I have been going to a Great Clips shop. I picked it because its the closest place to my house. The young ladies are friendly and some of them rather fetching. The younger ones usually give me the senior's discount so I get the cut for $10. The age they have posted for that is 65 and I am 56 but they don't ask my age and I don't mind the discount. Besides, I feel like 65+ many days...It's funny how one goes back to the familiar. I experimented with longer hair and beards and mustaches. Now, I am clean shaven and have a "regulation" haircut...

I cut my own, just fluff it out and whack off anything that sticks out. This is also why I wear a hat all the time!

How are the national chains?
About what you expect for a $15.00 hair cut. Most of the chain places have rotating staff so you never get to work with one person who knows the best way to cut your hair, and they don't take appointments. Find a good stylist who will take appointments and work with you in getting your hair done the way you like it. It's a little more money but it is well worth it.

We still have a few old-fashioned shops with male barbers in this land of small towns and countryside, but only a few. For a number of years I went to one. A friend was the barber and his shop was decorated in antiques, including the barber chairs. Then his shop, located in the main business area of town, burned down(It was a dangerous fire for the volunteers to fight -in one of those old, old downtown brick buildings.). He was permitted to continue working for awhile in the beauty parlor down the street, and I continued to utilize his services. After a few years his leukemia got bad enough that he had to quit, and he died not long thereafter. There were no longer any male barbers nearby, so I began to go to a lady barber in a beauty shop in another small town six miles away. She actually does a little better, more consistent job than my old friend. It's a little more expensive too, but oh well. I never knew until a few years ago that tipping was an expected thing in these places(at least that is what I've heard), so I actually tip a little now, making the whole thing even more expensive. But I don't mind much, because I enjoy so much having short hair again. I always tell folks that my haircut days are always good days.

It appears to me that there are almost no men taking up this honorable profession anymore. At least in this area there are no young men doing it.

I give the Mr. a clipper cut most of the year. I go in strike in November, so he goes and gets a nice cut right before the company Christmas party. The haircut money saved goes to buy me a hot little number to wear to said party

I pay to have mine cut, at a local place--no chain haircuts. none! no consistency, no service, no quality, no personal touch. I don't want a McHaircut so I go get it and some other girly painful things done at a salon that's reasonable--not cheap, but fair. Some things are not worth the money you save (like a Taurus firearm)

I do my own coloring since that can run up to 3 digits with no decimal if I go somewhere and have it done.

In '86 after wearing a uniform since '63, I decided that I was done shaving & sporting the "military" type haircuts.

I now get my hair cut twice a year, I like my hair a "little long" & go in for that "shaggy dog" look as I'm not trying to impress anyone.

When I retired for the second time in 2008, I started getting my beard shaved off twice a year when I get my semi-annual haircuts at one of two old school barbers I having been going to for over 25 years. They have the barber poles, use straight razors, and have an understanding of how to cut hair. Both barbers are in their early 80s.

When I was getting the standard flat-top at the barbershop I decided to let my wife try to re-flatten my head one day. I sat in a chair and she got behind me with the clippers and a comb and started trimming. All of a sudden I felt her slip with the clippers, which had no clipper guard, and she started laughing. I knew at that moment she had just gave me a reverse mohawk. She cut a strip of hair off right down the center of my head. That was the day I had to cut it all off for the first time. She never cut my hair again!

As a boy my dad would cut my hair with a old hand clipper. (Not electric). I hated it and I put a nail in the teeth and squeezed, broke off a tooth or two. Dad cured me by continueing to give me haircuts for awhile with it really pulling my hair!

That reminded me ---- My dad cut my hair when I was a kid too.
When he finished and I went upstairs my mom would look at me and cry.... NOT a good sign

I have a flat top. I get mine cut by a barber who is not all that talented. Sometimes mine looks ok, other times not so much. I got a coupon in the mail from "Great Clips" which is very close to my house. One day I was going to UPS. On the way I decided to stop by "Great Clips". I presented the coupon and asked for a haircut. The girl looked frantic and said, "I don't cut flat tops!" She then started asking every, I use the term loosely, "barber" in the shop and they said that they didn't cut flat tops. She said to come back after 3 p.m. and there would be a few girls who could cut a flat top. I made by business rounds and returned about 3:30 p.m. A different crew was at their chairs and guess what?...no body could give me a flat top! The girl at the front said that they were opening a new shop about 10 miles away and she knew that there was one girl who could give a flat top. To make a long story longer...I missed my chance to use my coupon and still go to my not so talented barber. At least he cuts my hair to somewhat resemble a flat top...most of the time. "Great Clips" ain't so great.

A good barber is like a good auto mechanic, hard as all hell to find.
The only good one I know of is 25 miles away and always has a one to one and a half hour wait. Right now I am sporting a haircut by a new barber I tried.
It looks like he did it with a weed wacker.

I get my haircut by a girl who works in the best old fashioned barber shop in town, but she cuts mine at her house in her basement. She has a booming side business. I make fun of her because she has her clippers hooked up to a regular old shopvac.

Been cutting my own for almost 20 years. The cute girls at the hair cutting school just wouldn't cut the top short enough, and after fixing that several times, figured it couldn't be too difficult. Also figured i should get a discount, as only really had hair on the sides.

About 5 years ago advanced from the one knuckle scissors method, went high tech and got cheap set of electric clippers. The only reason it takes 1/2 hour is the scissors trim on the beard.

Lemme get this straight. Several of you say you cut your own hair. Literally? Not the wife or girlfriend? How about the back and neck?
If it's that easy I may try it myself.

I cut mine myself as well. I started after basic training since I didn't feel like paying for one every week. Generally I'll use one length and buzz it. I've gotten to where I can give myself a high and tight (straight and symmetrical at that) in less than 10 minutes. This last time I got fancy and have three different lengths! I'm letting the top get long so I cropped the sides nice and short and blended it into the top. Right now the top is about 3/4 of an inch so I won't go much further... maybe an inch.

The basement, in my wife's dog grooming shop. I get a zero maintenance haircut every couple of weeks. She uses the dog grooming shears on me. The same ones she uses on the dogs butts...

Talking problem hair

I'm going to have to find myself a new Barber to. My old one who is about 80 now is only open a couple days a week and it is hard for me to get off work long enough to see him. Also the last few times he cut it I had total strangers come up to me and comment that I had received really bad haircut. I would tell them that," it only cost $6 though" where as they would kindly tell me I should go somewhere else and spend more money. I had an uncle in Columbus, Ga. that owned the Blue Jay barbershop there but he has recently passed. So that just leaves my ex-wife who cuts hair out of her house in a nearby town.Current wife gave me "that look" when I mentioned it so that idea is off the table. So anyhow, my hair is longer than it has been in about 30 years. I keep telling her that I'm going to get it cut in a "mullet" when it gets long enough. Which earned me "that look" again.....

I used to get mine cut at a barber in town for many years. And for many years I watched as his parkinsons got worse and he started to make me nervous. He only used scissors and a straight razor. Unfortunately (or maybe not for customers) it got to the point he had to stop so I found a local gal. After a while I got tired of her coming up with excuses why whe had to cancel so now I just go to wally world and take my chances. I figure it's only hair, it doesn't seem to stop growing and I can't see it so if it looks bad I trim it up when I get home.

With them fancy electric clippers, it is no problem. uses the shortest guide on top, next shortest on sides and back. Take the guide off to shave off back and side of neck.

Okay it does take some practice, as the very back is done by aligning the clipper with your off hand.

Mine is simple. I use the lowest/shortest guide on the top and sides and then take it off to buzz around the ears and on the neck. I put the guide back on to blend it in. Done.

I do this every two weeks.

I remember dad sending me and my two younger brothers to Dan Manco's shop with three quarters back in the mid 60's. Three buzz cuts.
I've been going to the same hot blond across the ave. for 24 years now. Shampoo, scalp massage, big ole... green eyes, big ole...scissors. Did I mention she has my wifes first name. Up to 16 bucks now and I always tip 5 cause she takes care of me when I need it. The haircut that is......

I cut my own hair. Have not had a professional haircut in 20 years.

There are at least some advantages to have less than a full head of hair.

Went into a barber shop one Saturday in 1978 or so (in a different galaxy, far away) to find it full of waiting customers. One of the barbers glanced at me and told me to "take a number". Even in those days my hair was thinning out, and I had no desire to spend half my day off reading old magazines. So I did a U-turn, went home, and told the wife to get her horse trimmer and do the deed.

Haven't been in a barber shop since. We use a Canadian Wahl kit from the Hudson's Bay store in Fort McPherson, NWT that we picked up in 1979.

There's still some left to cut but I'm not to the Black Agnes point--yet. And they don't sell shirts like that in this part of the country, either.

I go to one of those "unisex" hair joints. The gal that cuts my hair has been doing it now for probably ten years and I like her. Now these places are not like a "traditional" barber shop, no hot towels, no neck shaving, etc......but considering, she does a decent haircut and my wife and I both use her, she is alright.

I can remember going to the barbershop back when I was a lad, and even having my hair cut with those non-electric, hand operated clippers. Yes, most hair cutting is done with a comb and sissors, but those things were really an antique!

I always liked that Bay Rum and that talcum powder they used to but on your neck with the brush.

I've had a few barbershop shaves and they were great, but I've had a full beard now for over thirty years!

I really like the old, traditional, all male shops.....but they are going the way of the dinosaur.

Since I've got a nice gal that does mine now, that's ok. I think I'll stay with her. (I really don't have another choice!)

After the guys in my favorite shop in beautiful downtown Conyers, GA up and retired, closing a couple of years back, I found a great traditional shop in Snellville, GA.
I like the old style shop, hot shave cream for edging and some of the most interesting conversation in town.

I cut it myself. I use a beard & moustache trimmer so that I can get a really close cut.

I have cut my own hair for over 30 years. I do not care if it is perfect since I have been married for 37 years.

Try barber/salon schools if you are not too particular. Plus, barber shops are making a comeback, but most are "frilly" by old school standards. Supercuts, etc. are rarely good at about $16-$20 bucks. Have wife/girlfriend do it or buy a Wahl and do it yourself. Tough times.

I had to giggle a little bit at that.

For me, it is Lloyd's Barber Shop in Rural Retreat Virginia. 8 bucks for a haircut I could probably do myself, but where would I catch up on all the town business. Plus Mr. Lloyd is an accomplished Banjo player (actually he can play anything with strings on it) so there is entertainment as well, which is well worth the 8 bucks you spend on the haircut.

Used to go to a shop near by but he closed. Found another for 10 bucks but gives 2 bucks off for seniors. Should just shave my head as there isn't much left there, Hair that is.

Default Not the same barber.....

But the same family for over 30 years. Nearly all of the barbers around here are named Brandt. I started off with the original then I went to his great looking niece that could really cut hair. Then she left and I used her brother for a long time. Now I'm going to a guy named 'Steve' and I don't know if his last name is Brandt or not, but I wouldn't be surprised.

By the same token, I've lived here for 60 years and every small engine repair shop is run by a 'Driggers'. And there is about one on every main road anywhere you go. Them Driggers is really prolific and they must be born with a spark plug wrench in their hand.

I am not much on haircuts and figure one about every 4-6 months is enough. I don't know why people regret the changing of the times from some old guy in an old time barber shop with Playboys to places with real live good looking women.
