Wow, study is the word. Such detail. And apparently they all knew a pic was going to be taken since they were all at the window looking at the cameraman. Thanks for posting.

My favorite is the guy in the second story far right window. He has supervisor face down pat.

How many folks do you suppose walked into that bay window before they put up a rail?
Also surprised there was no signage...

Back then they had more common sense. You put up a rail and it's purpose is obvious.
Today the sign would read.
This rail has been installed to prevent you from walking into the window which is known to the state of California to cause cancer.
Please do not eat the rail
Please do not sit on the rail
Please do not climb on the rail
Please do not climb inside the rail
Please do not stick your head between the rails, it may get stuck
Damage to the rail may result in punishment up to and including fines and/or imprisonment
The management assumes no liability or responsibility for any acts that may injure anyone in the event they even touch the rail
Question, comments or concerns may be directed to Smith & Wesson Management during the hours of 9AM -5PM during normal business hours Monday-Fri.
THAT'S why there's no signage. "There's your sign" we live in a screwed up world

You forgot "Made In China".
Is that a cat in the window? Great photo.

The only guy you don't see at a window is the guy that's actually making the guns - He's too busy to be mugging for the camera.
Oh - And when things got slow - Guess who got laid off......

Isn't that Roy Jenks? The person leaning out the window on the left almost looks to be a woman.

Most of that building is a factory -- you can see the big overhead drive belts through the windows and many of those people are production folks...

LOL! I meant no S&W signage on the building. I look forward to your rant explaining that one.

How many corporate executives "wear vests, bow ties and neck ties" except on special occasions?

Belt driven machinery, neck ties and vests. Considering it was common to have a beer or two at lunch sounds like an entertaining afternoon.

Well now, you're not allowed to change your story 'cause that's mine and I'm stickin' to it
Isn't it funny how one can interpret things on the internet?
I would certainly hope there's a sign and given the age of the building it probably has the year placed in the block as well.

Cool photo.
Here's a .32 Hand Ejector that was made in that building and shipped in October of 1907; just a few months before that picture was taken. It's possible one or more of those people actually touched this gun during it's assembly.

The sidewalk looks like bricks or pavers? And it's on a dirt road. What's the address of that building and is it still there? (Please forgive if this is a dumb question)

This is a fantastic photo. My first job, as a kid (15) was working for a local photographer that opened his business in 1905. He had a lot of old glass plate negatives and it was amazing the detail that the old, quality (Zeiss) lenses could produce on the large format negatives. He didn't have many 8x10, but had a lot of 5x7.
He also had a bunch of panorama negatives taken on a camera that rotated, while holding 5" wide and 7" film. Some of these would take up to 36" to do a full 360 degree photo. We printed these on contact printers.
This guy that I worked for was so old....that he used "flash powder" in the "early days."
It was one hell of an education. He had more stories than you can imagine.

Good question. Does anybody know if that building is still there. And if so, what is it used for now?

I was able to find this:
Quote:
In 1971, when the old Smith & Wesson factory was slated to be demolished, Jinks obtained access to the building and had one week to salvage whatever was desired.
|
Quoted from THIS document.
Here is a google earth link to 2100 Roosevelt Avenue, Springfield, MA. Be sure to check out the street view. Part of the old building?
