697 years ago today...
the small army of Scotland's Robert the Bruce routed the much larger army of England's Edward II at Bannockburn, insuring Scotland's independence. In a battle that lasted over 12 hours (an infinity for armored troops in hand-to-hand combat), Bruce's forces, who had gained an initial advantage, were on the brink of defeat by Edward's battle-hardened veterans, when they were reinforced by Angus Og MacDonald's highlanders and a small troop of horsemen. At the sight of this, the English soldiers threw down their arms and attempted to flee the battlefield. They weren't fleeing just the highlanders, but the hardest and best cavalry in Europe, the Knights Templar, recently driven from France by the French king Phillip IV, and given shelter by MacDonald. Talk about earning your keep!
I'm not anti-English by any means, I just believe in an old Scottish proverb...
ENGLAND FOREVER! Scotland, just a wee bit longer.

I visited most of the British Isles while in the USN. I always thought it was funny how they always talked so poorly of each other. One thought the other was all a bunch of alcoholic do nothings, another said they were all just low lander scum, on and on. Some of it despite being spoken in English I had no hope of understanding. I liked the Wadworth 6X though, and they would tell you the best stories while you were all putting it away.

My Dad was half Welsh and half German. My Mom was mostly Irish as her Dad was 100% Irish and her Mom was Scotch-Irish and Cajun French. (Hebert, Boudreaux, Inerarity, McSomethingorother) All of that was influenced by Southern Cracker culture (poor white trash) who somehow wound up somewhat educated and prosperous to a certain extent. All of my ancestors hated the English but they never did anything to me so I guess they're OK even though they have wimped out from what they used to be. Most of my ancestors got here before 1800. Some of them were kicked out of the mother country. There are no inbreds that I know of.

I didn't ask where, I asked how. There are several stories how he met his death. The one I like best is reflected in the phrase, "Hell hath no fury as a woman scorned".
Sometimes I think I am not a very nice person.

The most accepted account of Edward II's death is that he was either strangled or suffocated by an agent of Queen Isabella and Roger Mortimer at Berkeley castle on October 11, 1327. There is also the Fieschi Letter that gives some evidence that Edward II escaped and died in exile around 1341, possibly in Italy. If you're referencing the alleged "red hot poker" story, that is uncorroborated and was never mentioned in any contemporary account of Edward II's death.

The red hot poker? I have no idea what you mean, but then why am I laughing? After watching Braveheart, it would have been a fitting conclusion to the life of Edward II if it were true.
There are several things you need to know about me; I an not going to San Francisco today to watch the parade, I have no love for the English royal family, and in a previous life I must have served under Frances Marion during the Revolutionary War or under Andy Jackson at New Orleans.
Okay, time for me to shut up and go for a ride on my motorcycle.
