It is with a heavy heart on this 4th of July I must tell you that my wife, Connie, succumbed to her illness last night. She had been fighting cancer on and off since 2002, but as one or two of you know things took a bad turn late last year. She refused to give up but it was clear that she was unlikely to get her life back or anything like it as time went on. Her final decline was pretty swift and started last week, and I know she was in considerable pain for much of yesterday as the complications mounted. Once she got up to IMC it was clear where things were going so her sister and I told them to make her comfortable. All was quiet at the end.
This picture is a measure of her resilience and determination and was taken on New Year's Eve 2009. Connie got dressed up, put on her long wig to cover her "chemo hair" and smiled for the camera. She hid the pain well. A lifelong lover of pets and wildlife, she will be mobbed at the Rainbow Bridge.
Farewell my love, until we meet again in the land where no shadows fall.
