Well this hunting season has been full of trials and tribulations and the luck continues. With my left arm being out of commission it has been nothing but handguns and the only one I have I can shoot accurately and well is my Outdoorsman. I spent all summer working on the loads, casting bullets and testing them and practicing out to 65 yards. Well today I had a small 4 pointer come to me at about 20-25 yards. I am using 150 grain #358156 hollowpoints. I lined him up and parked one shot right into his chest and he jumped up and turned but only went about ten yards and stopped. He was in sight so I fired twice more while he was broadside. Then a third when I aimed for his neck. THen he bolted but was slow going so I fired again, that I think was a miss. I waited about thirty minutes and then started to check for sign. No blood, no hair. I found where one bullet cut a small pine sapling in two so that one might have been deflected. I spent two hours looking literally everywhere. No blood, no hair and no deer. I think that the #358156 might not have been a bad choice, but that I am not getting either enough penetration or maybe they came apart too soon, who knows for sure. I lost a 6 pointer once with a .41 Magnum that once we found a large pool of blood we never found anymore. I do think though that I am going to swap out to some #358429's that I cast earlier so that I can get better penetration overall. I just hate losing deer, especially when its been so tough getting out and with the work I did. But tomorrow morning I will be out again (I have to work this afternoon or I would be out again, or I would still be there) to try my luck again.
