Default M1C/D in Sniper School

I know these aren't Smiths, but I love vintage military rifles. This is a picture I dug up of a Sniper School I ran for the AK NG Eskimo Scout BNs.

I really learned to shoot M1s while running these sniper schools.

NICE!!!

These are surely not issued or this was awhile ago...

If it was in last 20 years, what were they doing for ammo?

It was the early to mid 80s. We were issued M-72. This was the cold war era and powers to be, thought the open spaces in Western Alaska was perfect for snipers. I got a heck of a lot of support for my AK NG Sniper program. Seemed like the M-72 was unlimited, I never go my ammo request denied or cut.

Of course we all know that a lot of that ammo went to shooting seals and walruses 'n such.

In the late 80s we switched out the M1C/Ds for M-21s. Which means hte natives had to trade their personal '06 bolt guns for 308 bolt guns.

Great pic.
My son and I were shooting my old Garand a couple of weeks ago.
Lots of fun.
The rifle was made in 1943 and rebarreled in '54. It came back with the pile of Korean surplus rifles in the late 1980s. It looks like it went through three wars (and probably went through two) but still shoots very well.

Is that range is in Anchorage? If it is I have shot on it, back in 1991. I had the opportunity to teach the 1CAV how to use the M1-D's in the late 70's at Fort Hood. The hardest thing to do is learning to shoot with the offset rifle scope. Your picture sure made me go down memory lane!!

No Sir, its the Machine Gun range next to Range Central, Ft Richardson. We used the KD range for zeroing, but most of the class was at the MG range. It had pop up targets to 1100 yards.

We also used the Record Range, but that was w/out the scopes. The course lasted 3 weeks.

Different base, but boy, do those pictures bring back memories! My qualification rifle was a Winchester Model 70, but we also shot the M1, M21 and M24 systems.

In one of the schools I taught, somebody from the 172nd asked if they could use one end of our range to qualify one of their MG teams.

I had no problem with that. Afterwards they challenged us to a match where upon two of my sniper student using M1Cs against two of their team using the M60. See who could get the most targets down in the least amount of time.

I agreed, saying they could pick any two of my students. They picked my female medic (who was also on the State Rifle team) and a sleeping looking native from Gambell (who was actually one of my assistant instructors and capt of out state Machine gun team).

Bad choice, but they picked them, My guys (and Gal) smoked them, both with the rifles then when they competed with M-60s.

I had the regular army from the 172 in my Sniper Schools and Machine gun schools.

I sure miss that part of my Guard Career.
