Default Can we talk about rifles for a minute?

As I get older I find myself appreciating the long gun more and more. I used to own about 5 handguns for every shoulder arm but now it's about 2 to 1.

I have definite preferences in rifles. (Gee, who would have guessed that?) My first love was... and is... the Mauser 98. In my opinion this is the pinnacle of bolt action rifles and in the well over 100 years since its introduction nobody has significantly improved on the design. I have several military issue 98s, a number of factory built sporting rifles based on the 98, and a couple rifles I built myself. Below are a couple of my Mausers.

Here's a BRNO 602 I bought in 1986. We had a trade embargo against Czechoslovakia at the time and I had to do some tricks to get this thing imported through Canada.

I grabbed this one at a local show a couple years back. It's a classic conversion of a military 98 by a Bavarian gunsmith. Very elegant.

I picked up this Mark X action on GunBroker for $245. I added a Douglas barrel and European style stock with checkered steel butt plate and the usual features I prefer like the barrel mounted front swivel and hooded front sight. The barrel was a slightly used take-off a smith had and the stock was a "second" although I cannot find any flaws in it so I got both for a great price. I did most of the work myself and I figure I have about $450 invested.

Along the way I started to appreciate single-shot rifles. I don’t know why… maybe I just being deliberate and slow. As a photography student I liked working with the view cameras best, and they are one photo at a time and then go set it all up again affairs. I have come to realize that the Ruger #1 (other than the heavy barrel models) is the most beautiful production rifle made. I have gone a little nuts with them.

I also like other types of single-shot rifles. Here are a couple.

So, there you have it. While I have many different action types in my rifle inventory, the 98 and just about any single-shot model remain my favorites. Feel free to share your thoughts and photos.

You certainly have good taste in rifles. I'm partial to Mannlichers (6.5x54 and 7x57). Also have a sporterized custom Mauser 98 made in 1925 by an Austrian gunsmith; its in 8x57 caliber with 4X claw mount scope. IMHO such rifles, even though they are beautiful, are made to be hunted with or at least shot on a regular basis.

I really like that Star rolling block. I'm not sure I've heard of Star. Can you, or someone, give me a quick lesson on Star?

Default Nice

I have to admit I'm a rifle guy myself. I love single shots and have a C. Sharps Long Range Express 45 2 4/10" as well as a Ruger #1s in 218 Bee (1 of 500). I have long been a fan highly accurate bolt guns especially Remington 700V's and 40X's. I used to have an extensive collection of Winchester 52's most in the bull barrel configuration. I have a beautiful Win 54 30 Gov't 06 that shoots phenominal.

AFAIK made by the same company that made the STAR pistols. The Rollingblocks were imported in the 70's,,maybe the 80's. Probably by Garcia Corp, I think they were the US importer of STAR firearms then. They took over from Firearms International's operation.

Numrich may have bought out the remaining US inventory of these parts from Garcia as they offered them at some point too but with a Numrich mfg bbl.
Uberti made a small RB repro sometime in that time period also but I don't know if it is one in the same rifle with anothers name on it or not.

There is a US mfgr 'Lone Star Rifle Co' that make copys of Remington R/B's also,,not the same.

I think the 30-30 R/B carbine was a 'STAR Model RB',,, but could be wrong there. Seems like other calibers or configurations were offered too. A target sighted R/B pistol sounds familiar as does a .22Hornet caliber.

Nice rifle collection.
Really like the pre-war sporter 98.

Any prewar European sporters catch my interest.
I've still got one 98 sporter left,,an original JP Sauer mfg in 8x57j

Just Search for Star pistols or for Bonafacio, Ecchevaria (sp?) y Cia

They were in Eibar, in the Basque portion of Spain. One of Spain's major gun makers for years. Many of their pistols were Colt auto variants. Later ones had much of the CZ-75 in them, like the M-30 9mm.

I had no idea they made a copy of the Remington Rolling Block!

I'm taking delivery of a model 70 pre 64 today. I'll post some pics later. Sure hope it's everything he said it was, you know how auction sites can be. It's a standard .30-06.

I am a pre 64 Model 70 man myself and I have 5 of them, including a 270 that is unfired from 1957. I sold a stock duplicator to a guy in Pa. a few years back and he showed me an Obendorf Mauser that had an English walnut stock, case colored receiver, bottom metal and scope rings/bases and to top it off the rifle had an octagon barrel. Original double set triggers and a well fitted skeleton buttplate. What a nice rifle!!! It was so pretty I dont even remember what caliber it was. I just finished a 700 with an Obermeyer 5R barrel and Premier Heritage scope. First five rounds out of the barrel just about went into the same hole...I think it is going to be a tackdriver. Gotta love rifles.
