Sold off my gun collections..
I am down to about a dozen. Will probably build that up a few more. Kept the special few, and some hunting guns. It is actually a good feeling. Frankly, I had far to many....and it was time to convert them into a better investment.
Same thing with the reloading equipment, I kept what was needed and sold off the rest.
Been a long run, accumulating and collecting. As of today,...I only own one S&W revolver.

I guess that we will all have to make that decision as we get older. Glad you got funds for other uses. Curiosity - What S&W did you keep?

Giz, I did the same thing. Kept the few that I really like and need for home protection and sold off the rest. With my age and health condition, I just couldn't stand the idea of saddling my wife with 40 some odd guns to dispose of. The cash went to a better place.

I am getting old so a couple of years ago I decided to sell some guns and I sold 4 in a week and I felt good. Within a month I had bought 5. I then decided to let my wife deal with after I am dead. Larry

Giz that is so sad. I think I'am going to cry. When you get out of the mental ward we will talk about it and get you back to your old self. Don

There should be a service which would take care of picking up collections and putting them up for auction and skimming 10 percent for a good cause.

Fine...as long as you aren't selling them off to buy more butter churners and pre 19th century cookware!

I'll let my kids sort them out when I go. They'll have a lot to keep them busy.
I told them if they fight over them, I'll come back and haunt them.

one option could be to sell a lot of them to buy fewer more expensive ones or get the favourites say, 100% engraved with ivory handles or sumthin'? Refer to Korth thread...
Usually people state that they could buy whatever the number of guns for the price of just one of -insert name here- super expensive deluxe piece; well here's an opportunity to do the opposite and get a Manurin(sp?), Korth, Freedoms Arms, commemorative ltd edition S&W et al - and regularly use it?
Just a thought - bit of optimism for ya?

I had a dream about this very thing the other night. The exception being...I hadn't sold all my guns.
In the dream, I'd passed away and the wife was selling all my guns for what I told her I PAID FOR THEM! Horrible nightmare.....
In reality however, I have a cousin and we have both informed the wives. If anything happens to either of us, get the one left to handle all the firearm related selling. I have no children, he has only a son and a daughter. Neither have any interest in firearms from a collectors point.

Thanks for the very sobering thread Giz.... Now I don't see the point of going to the next gun show! S&W "keeper" has the best name on the forum. They're only ours while we're standin'!

19th century cookware? That's a bit contemporary for the Giz.
Dang Giz. Is this related to your recent trip to the hospital? By the way, I hope your recovery is complete and that you are feeling better.
Take care,
Out

By "Tunnel Rat" you mean that well-worn two inch Chief, correct?
Cool weapon and a good choise.

I've got some that came from family that will go to family. Either a daughter, son-in-law or ??? The rest, I told my wife were bought with my beer and cigarette money so when I'm gone, she can sell them and do with the money what she wishes. Her brother is the god-father of my guns who I've asked to make sure she gets what they're worth. Until then, I imagine there'll be a few more follow me home.

"...pry them from my cold dead hands."
On my death bed, I'm going for the Shiva look; have them surgically attach extra arms and hands so I can hold on to my guns.

I have several that I intend to be buried with. Going to hedge my bets against where I'm going, so I might need them....
Other than that, I guess that I'm lucky. I've got three kids now and I'm still young enough to have more. At the reduced level of guns that I have now, that's only around ten guns per child to pass on, a frighteningly small number.
I need more guns. Ponders.

I say keep your collections as long as they give you pleasure. Sell when they stop giving you pleasure.
If I die with my collections and others have to deal with them than so be it but in the meantime I'm enjoying all of mine (I have sold 20 guns in the last 4 years though).

I agree. I collect for me and most of the value that I receive from my collection is self satisfaction. I try to find rare or unique specimens and then clean them up and preserve them with a good coat of Renaissance. I have given the wife the name of a few folks that will get her the best dollar value when I kick, however, they might be gone before me.
Not my problem, I'll be dead. So for now I am enjoying gathering my little S&W family, talking about them with you other gun nuts and whatever happens later, so be it.

Land... God ain't making any more of that! I can't think of anything else that is a better investment. As for guns, I haven't figured out how to shoot more than two at a time anyway. hmmmm... I think maybe I need to thin my own herd. One for sure keeper will be my Danny Caywood 20 ga smoothbore!

I was going to ask what the better investment was, when I saw you purchased some land. Probably a good move. I counted my guns a few nights ago. I ain't never gonna do that again!!!
