Default My rotten luck

I retired in 1989 from a place everyone in the US knows of. My checks have been sent to my bank by direct deposit until this month. I get regular mail from them quarterly. They have my address and phone number.

This month, I did not get a check but instead got a letter saying they did not have my current address. Yet they sent me the letter to my house. I called them to find out why they did not have my address.

Something went wrong in their system and now I have to retire all over again from the same company. To get the retirement package for me to fill out will take about 30-45 days. Once it is mailed back, it will take about 60 days to process. Then my checks will return to direct deposit. Of course, I will get the retroactive money once it starts.

I have not moved. My bank is still the same. My account is still the same number.

So how did they drop me out of the system and why do they need my address when they sent me a letter to my address saying I needed to let them know where to send a retirement package?

I think I have a black cloud hanging over me.

It's not just you. I work around lots of retired military and I hear that complaint more often that you should think is possible. I would love to say I'm shocked, but honestly... not really.

Your a retired LEO, call some other brothers and find out what is up. The State of LA must have an Attorney General, I would be on the phone talking to them at this moment.

Good luck, hope everything works out.

The thing that pops into my mind is are you the only one to whom this has happened? If not, can everyone is HAS happened to withstand not getting a check or deposit for 3, 4, or 5 months? There are retirees who don't have a lot of savings, and social (in)security may not be enough to cover all their expenses. I hear horror stories about the cost of medications and doctor visits from my mom. I don't even want to think about how much her emergency room visit on Sunday is going to cost.

Somebody at that company needs to be investigating this thoroughly, not merely saying "oh well, we'll just have everyone re-do their paperwork."

Not sure if I am the only one this happened with. Lost track of the others that left when I did.

As to your mom, if she is on medicare and has a nice supplement, she is not going to be out any money.

While I do not draw social security, I am on medicare and with a supplement through United Health care. My medical care is covered 100%. No copays, no deductibles. My only medical expense is the medications that may be prescribed and the cost of the medicare and supplement.

For a guy who used to make a living with words, I was sure imprecise there, wasn't I? Mom will be fine, she does have a good supplemental plan. They've paid for her hip surgeries and everything that went with them. But some of the other folks in her condo building aren't as fortunate. It's their stories about which I was speaking. The medication costs are staggering sometimes.

Glad you'll be okay in the interim while they sort out the mess. Hope it is resolved sooner rather than later.

You have been retired for 22 years? I would say your luck has been stellar!

For real, they probably thought your young girlfriend was still getting your checks!

.
I am happy to hear your mom is fine. The others there may be like the many that would not take out a medicare supplement because they did not want to spend the money. Many should be investing their money now but want the money since they like to live large. Later in life, they regret their failure to save or invest. My father was one of them. Made a fortune in business and never bought any insurance. Retired with a ton of money. Three years later, one medical bill ran over $300,000. During the next several years until his death, he went through over a million dollars in medical expense. Try telling that to young people.

She would if she could. That is the reason for direct deposit.

The one thing I learned about young girl friends. They do not care about an old man with looks, charm or nice cars, boats or horses. They do care about spending money, especially if it belonged to an old, fat ugly man.
