Reality check:
Last night, I asked a counter girl in a Chik Filet with Brandi on her nametag what she thought of the old song "Brandi". The answer, of course, was "What song named Brandi, I never heard of it". I noticed more grey hair this morning.

Got Pandora running thru my Sony TV to my Bose... Relaxing on the back deck with an a adult beverage. Too many good tunes to list them all... The Doobie Brothers 'Black Water' is playing at the moment... I think Pugsters is barking at a deer in the woods... Life is good in Tennessee.

While I enjoy listening to what the radio stations now call "classic rock" (which translated means if you were around when it came out you are now old), I prefer the oldies. The REAL oldies. Giving all due respect to the guitar genius of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, if you went by the percentage of time a particular type of music was playing on my stereo I have this odd feeling my preferred music choice would leave me alone, or nearly so, on the classical music island.

When they ask that typical "Beatles or Rolling Stones?" question I usually answer Tchaikovsky...

Unless of course I must pick a rock band, and then I say "Lynyrd Skynyrd."

Scooter, thanks for the clip. But it's even better as the Stokowski transcription for full orchestra. IMHO.

Those are oldies but goodies?!?! I remember hearing those when they were first broadcast on the radio. I also remember vinyl records and 8-track tapes.

Man, I feel old...*sigh*

Rick-

If you're single, get her a used CD of it, if she seems to have potential to be at least a friend. She might like it. I guess some counter girls at Chick-Fil-A are classier and smarter than most...I've seen some college students in the mix there. And I know one who works part-time at an upscale burger place.

Is this the one where the barmaid loves the sailor who brought her silver from Spain? I always liked that. Don't know who sang it. I'll try to find it for you.

I know I've heard it on the sound in restaurants, including some like Chick-Fil-A. (sp?)

In fact, I need to get that when I go for the song by La Oreja de Van Gogh. (See separate topic for that video, the one needing translation)

You know, it seems just yesterday when the songs we're posting here were very current, and some became classics. I keep a range of music, from about the 15th Century-on. The good ones are good ones, and I don't feel "dated" in liking them! (Even, "Greensleeves" and, "Music of the High Renaissance." The gentleman who said he likes J.S. Bach knows a good thing when he sees it! Although my son argues for Pachibel's, "Canon" as a superior choice...)

I'll go look for, "Brandi".

LATER:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-tRXewCAmU It's spelled, "Brandy", like the drink. Band is Looking Glass.

Familiar with all the doo wop, 50's, 60's music etc.

A lot of songs are redone, and rather well.

Ronnie Spector of "The Ronettes" does a remake of the Beach Boys Hit "Don't Worry Baby"

Very nice, well I think so.

And from North Carolina, "Band Of OZ" Doo Wop etc.

A Whiter Shade of Pale - Sarah Brightman - YouTube

"A Whiter Shade of Pale", by Sarah Brightman. The style is more elegant and melodious than the version from Procul Harum, if I have the name of the original singers right.

Sounds like a different song from her remarkable vocal chords. I think I have all of her CD's, and very often, when I need my spirits lifted, I play one.

Brightman, who used to be married to Andrew Lloyd Webber, is one of the great voices of our day.

"Nights in White Satin", the Moody Blues live at Montreaux in 1997

I used to date a girl in college who really liked them and I had to agree, after hearing this song. It's still a favorite.

Dido live at Good morning America - YouTube

Dido Armstrong, "Sand in My Shoes", live on, "Good Morning, America", ABC, about 2003.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTvDz...eature=related "My Lover's Gone". Remarkable scenery in Rio de Janeiro in this beautiful video. Don't know if Dido has performed there. The video maker may have just wanted to show off his home town.
He certainly did a bang-up job of it! Especially look for the several views of Christ atop Corcovado mountain and the vast Christmas tree rising from the sea, as well as the lovely beaches. The city by night is breathtaking.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbbsjChUiV4 "White Flag", sung live at Brixton Academy in her native London. This may be her most familiar song in the USA. It's the one most played on radio stations.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvmQXuHyKVA The poignantly candid, "Life For Rent". I think this is one of my absolute favorites from her, and I have all of her CD's. Listen carefully to the honest words, expressed with some regret and a sense of awakening to the need to lay down roots and to achieve, if life is to have meaning, not being just a "passing through" experience.

I was shocked to learn recently that some of the younger members on another board consider Dido to be an oldie but goodie, who they remember from their youth. Granted, they are barely in college, but were maybe in junior high school when they first heard her. Gad, time flies.
I'm still hoping for her next CD in a year or so, and think she's one of the relatively few of today's singers whose music will endure.

Sarah Brightman is no doubt one of the best female vocalist in the world today and does this song really well. But I like Annie Lennox's rendition of this great song much better. A pop singer, singing a pop song.

The Kinks

"Deadend Street"
The Kinks - Dead End Street - YouTube

There's a crack up in the ceiling,
And the kitchen sink is leaking.
Out of work and got no money,
A Sunday joint of bread and honey.

What are we living for?
Two-roomed apartment on the second floor.
No money coming in,
The rent collector's knocking, trying to get in.

We are strictly second class,
We don't understand,
(Dead end!)
Why we should be on dead end street.
(Dead end!)
People are living on dead end street.
(Dead end!)
Gonna die on dead end street.

Dead end street (yeah)
Dead end street (yeah)

On a cold and frosty morning,
Wipe my eyes and stop me yawning.
And my feet are nearly frozen,
Boil the tea and put some toast on.

What are we living for?
Two-roomed apartment on the second floor.
No chance to emigrate,
I'm deep in debt and now it's much too late.

We both want to work so hard,
We can't get the chance,
(Dead end!)
People live on dead end street.
(Dead end!)
People are dying on dead end street.
(Dead end!)
Gonna die on dead end street.

Dead end street (yeah)
Dead end street (yeah)

(Dead end!)
People live on dead end street.
(Dead end!)
People are dying on dead end street.
(Dead end!)
Gonna die on dead end street.

Dead end street (yeah)
Dead end street (yeah)
Dead end street (yeah)
Head to my feet (yeah)

I remember the first time I heard this. I was visiting my twin brother. It was playing in the background but it stopped the conversation dead. We both made copies of it. Louise Tucker's Midnight Blue http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g72Hr...eature=related

We also blasted out Jennifer Rush The Power of Love at full volume during the same visit. JENNIFER RUSH - 'THE POWER OF LOVE' 1984 - YouTube

They are not particularly old, but they bring back memories. My brother died 4 years ago.

Going back to the first song I can remember hearing on the "wireless" back in the 53, how about Patti Page How Much is that Doggie in the Window How Much Is That Doggie In The Window - Patti Page - YouTube

Then in 57 Paul Anka impressed me with Dianna Paul Anka - Diana (1957) - YouTube

In the early 60s I listened to Carole King's Might as Well Rain Until September while lying in a hospital bed Carole King - It Might as Well Rain Until September - YouTube

And who in the 60s didn't have a Simon & Garfunkel album. I loved The Sound of Silence, Homeword Bound, but have chosen I Am a Rock
I Am a Rock - YouTube

Just a short selection of songs that made a lasting impression.

And Snow Blind Friend. Axton is also responsible for Joy To The World. Who would drink a bullfrog's wine?

The song Brandy was done by Looking Glass. Hoyt Axton was a great song writer. Whenever Hush by Deep Purple comes I ruin my hearing some more, with the volume cranked up. Also love Walk Away by James Gang.

Yeah. It sucked when KWJZ changed formats. That was a good station for a nice, relaxing listen. Good music for making heavy traffic seem not as bad.
