NO joke. The owner was found dead outside his place and his critters are running loose. About a half-hour winding drive from my place. Those big cats can cover a lot of ground fast.

Funny thing is, I found out after I got home about 40 minutes ago and on my way home, 3 different times in about 5 miles, deer ran right in front of my truck and small groups were running in the fields. Lots more activity than usual. Could be the rut coming in, who knows. All I know is that I saw all that extra activity and when I get home, I find out that about 48 LARGE predators got loose ouside of Zanesville.

In Jackson, Central New Jersey town, a tiger was running loose for a while.

The authorities went to a woman living n Jackson who was known to keep two dozen tigers on her property. She was appropriately named the "Tiger Lady".

When she was asked if the tiger on the loose belonged to her she said something like: "Why are you asking me?"

10:30 news report just said they've shot black bears (we have those anyway), GRIZZLIES!!!!, tigers, and lions. They think about 48 critters total got loose but no numbers yet as far as what's been spotted or shot.
This is nuts! Schools in the area are closed tomorrow. Wonder what it's gonna do to the deer herd.

I have 12 gauge Remington 870 HD's with deer slugs by each door right now and the wife and I have 629's with 300 gr hardcast on our hips.

Not lookin' good for the local deer and coyote population. Plus, there are lots and lots and LOTS of trees to get up and hide. This could get interesting, folks.

I work in Licking County, which is the next county west of where the animals escaped. Most of the guys are work are saying "Why couldn't this have happened during deer gun season?!!!".

Our local news reported this last night but that's the first time I heard any numbers. (Typical...) That's a LOT of dangerous critters on the loose! Don't forget to carry that 870 while walking Fifi! It could be rough on the local pet population till they've rounded up or killed all those predators.

Reports coming in of major traffic jams caused by well-dressed couples crossing bridges into Ohio from Western Pennsylvania, the West Virginia Panhandle and Northern Kentucky.

Seems that many of the guy had been late in making good on their promises to take their spouses out for some fancy foreign food.

I wonder about your deer and doggie population getting set upon. These critters are used to being fed by HUMANS and therefore see HUMANS as their primary food source.
Same reason that no one should feed wild animals... They think of people as a food source.

I wouldn't worry too much. It's just a bunch of confused animals wandering around, wondering why they aren't being fed. They'll all be shot or captured in a few days.

There are special lion loads in calibers like .470 NE, .416 Rigby, etc. But not too many people have these rifles laying around. Might not be necessary anyway. A guy in Alaska killed a polar/grizzly hybrid with an M16A1 (yes, it was full auto).

I saw a video of a lion fighting a black bear. the lion keeped going after the bear. The bear kept swatting him away. The lion gave up after awile and left the bear alone. The bead didn't want to fight but he held his own.

If it had been a grizzly bear the lion would have been dead.

A friends brother was a professional varmint in South Africa for quite some time. When I first met him I asked “What in the world does a professional varmint hunter do?”. He replied “You know, a hippo gets in your corn or a lion gets your goats and you call me.”

I asked what he used rifle wise and he said he had a 375 H&H of course for thick skinned animals but most of his professional shooting was done with a 30-06 except for big cats. For big cats he used a sxs 12 ga with buckshot that had been modified to fire both barrels at once. You simply waited for the cat to leap, aimed at the base for the throat, pulled the trigger and stepped to one side.

Former Dallas Chief of Police retired to my little town several years ago and promptly began a Bengal Tiger breeding business. Now he and the Mrs. are splitting up....can't waiting to see the custody fight there...and if one gets pissed at the other and the cats "accidently" get loose...gonna be a "Bad Day at Black Rock"....!!!!

Last press conference just now, the sheriff said they're down to 3, they think, unaccounted for. A grizzly, cougar, and monkey. Jungle Jack said they're prob'ly hunkering down in this rain and the biggest danger at the moment is the mountain lion. Apparently, last night another monkey was loose and a lion killed it.

And of course, the inbred contingent rear their deformed heads and some of 'em are trying to drag unrecovered carcasses into their houses.
What the heck?????

One says there were 48 animals, the other indicated 51. There were more in the house that they've completely secured.

Sorry no penguins. I believe monkeys and orangutans were in the house. I live about 45min from Z-ville and knew the guy years ago when he was local. There's much more to the story but I think I'll let the news divulge what they want. Supposed to be down to just two animals on the loose. A monkey and a gray wolf.

I just wish they would have let some of the critters migrate my way Ground hogs and deer really aren't a challenge for my 500's.

When my DMAT team was deployed to Galveston immediately after Hurricane Ike hit, we were informed that an SAR team going door-to-door checking houses, opened one front door and out ran a couple of big cats, including a Bengal tiger. We named our base camp "Camp Tiger on Bovine Bay", in honor of escapee and the dead steer that was floating in the boat harbor about 50-75 yds from our tents. It was a main topic for conversation for the time we were there, but we never did find out exactly what happened to the cat. The dead cow was eventually removed, but not until after we left.

Weird, tragic, surreal, almost defies description. I've met Terry a couple times through a friend and went to his place once. Terry was eccentric to say the least. He was a good guy, I hate how they keep focusing on his criminal background. His year in the poke relates to poor paperwork skills on his part from when he had an FFL and bought/sold/traded guns as a hobby/side job. He was a bit of a local legend for more than just his animals, but he wasn't an evil person. Just treaded on thin ice from time to time when he didn't agree with authority. He was one of those characters that was a bit of a conundrum, shaped by both the hippie scene of his youth and his time in 'Nam. A bit of a hell raiser, but also a kind soul who'd give you the shirt off his back who'd obviously hit a dark patch that he couldn't deal with.

Also, I got a chuckle out of the responses on this board compared to some of the other boards I'm on. I'm also into bicycling and on one of those boards, the predominant theme is how could the authorities shoot the innocent animals. For the record, I am fully in support of the authorities. As beautiful, magnificent, etc... a Bengal Tiger may be, you can't have 18 of them running lose at night in the woods of Ohio!

5 years and still seems so surreal to me. There is some info that never made the news that has people in Terry's inner circle doubting the official narrative. The big one is why did Terry cut the locks on the cages when he had possession of the keys?

I believe that a 30-06 is powerful enough to bring down any of those critters, and then some! It's my favorite caliber for just about any hunt in North America.

So its 5 full years. Anybody know about the wolf and monkey? They still running around?bbb

From what I remember, within about 48 hours that had all animals accounted for except the monkey, which the believe was in the stomach of 1 of the big cats. Even if it did escape, no way it would have survived the winters we've had since then.

But as far as being spotted in the other sense, cheetahs prefer open savannahs, where they run down their prey animals, like Thomson's gazelles, etc.


If the zoo had any leopards, they'd be the hardest big cats to find. They're quite stealthy.


This episode showed that cops need access to more powerful rifles than most have, unless they're hunters. And they need to know where to shoot big cats and other large predators. Some experienced African hunter or wildlife authority should have been consulted. I understand that a well known zoo man and TV personality who seems to me to be a trifle bonkers was consulted. He evidently didn't tell the officers where to shoot a lion, although agreeing that it was needed.


I read a lot about this incident and was appalled at how poorly the matter was handled.

I really would like to know how all this animals escaped !!! Does the keeper opened all the cage before dying (btw: suicide or murder ?) or a malevolent hand did that ? Well, in both cases it is a free "big game hunt" ! A few made their days !
