Simple. It works. It always works. It's small. It's small enough that I always have it with me. And, most importantly, it works.

I generally carry my 642 in the right front pocket of my jeans, cargo shorts or other "pants." On Sundays, I carry in an ankle holster on my left leg in dress pants or docker-style pants.

And, of course, it always works. No break-in periods, no FTFs, no malfunctions, no problems.

I been told by the old timers who wanted to dig into me like a tic real men shoot blackpowder. I guess there correct but thats for when i get older......

I carry revolvers and auto's.

My auto pistols run as dependable / reliabile as my revolvers function. I purchased 3 bad brand new 1911's and took a loss when i traded them in because of FTF and stove pipes. I kept one the 1990 series 90 SA 1911a1 because it was so purdy in black park plus it was a national match pistol too. Three years ago i got a norinco 1911 and wanted to build it myself. I purchased every 1911 video on how to build, tweek the 1911 and watched them all winter over and over. I fitted a new G.I. barrel ($59 @ SPG) and a new IAI national match barrel bushing (cdnn investments) and a full length guide rod w/#18 recoil spring, now my norc 1911 shoots one clover leaf per mag. After doing this with awesome success i remembered my 90's SA new in the safe. The extractor needed tuning only. I fixed it and she runs ammo like all my other 1911's now. Like i said all my auto's function as good as all my revolvers. I have had problems with brand new 1911's (a few of them) but the CZ pistols never jammed once or ftf on me. My 1911's never jam now at all. My '05 auto ordnace army ww2 copy and my '05 springfield armory G.I. Mil Spec as it was called back then are the only two brand new 1911's to function properly right out of the box. My 70's and 80's new colt 1911's never functioned when they were brand new. Even my new colt python had cylinder timing problems too. I kind of washed my hands with colts.

I carry a new S&W model 58 in 41mag with a 4'' barrel in nickel most of the time. My choice of auto is the CZ82 in 9mm mak when there is a gathering with a dress code.

I carried the ruger redhawk in 44mag with the 7 1/2'' (winter)and 5 1/2'' (summer) barrels off and on for eons. I also carried the 1911 in 45acp and the CZ85DB in 9mm luger too off and inbetween the 44mag's. I notice as i get over 60yo now i need something a tad lighter. The S&W m58 w/4'' barrel in nickel is it plus i got the S&W m57 w/6 1/2'' barrel in 41mag too in nickel. But right now that little CZ82 in 9mm mak is part of me like my wallet unless i go into the bad lands then its my S&W in 41mag. The bad guys sees that shiney big revolver in the dark with the big hole in the barrel is really intimidating for sure. Bill

I wanted a S&W N frame in 41mag since i was in my 20's. Now i have 2 and i'm going to buy more too. (S&W 57 4'' barrel in nickel) Plus i want the S&W N Frames in 357mag and in 44mag too. (soon) I'm looking for the 4'', the 6 1/2'', and the 8 3/8'' barrels too.

I have been a LEO since 1968 until I retired this year. I carried a revolver up until about 1990, then we went thru an endless succession of semi autos in .9's and .40's. I could never shoot as well with the semi's and never really trusted them. Half the time at the range was spent practicing how to clear a FTF or FTE. I can't remember how many times magazines were faulty or just fell out of the gun because they weren't properly seated by the shooter. Revolvers aren't foolproof either but if properly cleaned and maintained they usually work as intended. I have given most of my semi's to my son (also an LEO) as he doesn't trust revolvers. Another thing, revolvers really look good!

Why do I carry a revolver?

1) It's simple, intimidating and more versatile.

2)If it was good enough for policemen for 80 years before Mel Gibson and Keanu Reeves and their spraycans entered Hollywood, then it's good enough for me.

3) 1 or 2 well placed bullets from a revolver say a lot more than 15 sprayed bullets from a semi automatic. If you can't hit what you aiming at, then you're dead no matter what you're carrying.

4) If I need more than 6 rounds, I don't need a semi-automatic handgun, I need a 12 gauge or an AR-15

5) Revolver looks better 8)

6) you can keep it loaded all the time without worrying about magazine springs weakening

7) You don't have to keep a slide oiled all the time

8) no brass to pick up

9) few, if any, jamming problems

10) misfires you pull the trigger again

11) no slide render the gun inoperable if it gets pushed against something in the front.

Because I can't always carry a rifle.

Because I'm too danged old to swing a bat and not dumb enough to get too close to a knife fight.

This article was probably one of the biggest, if not the biggest, reasons I decided to carry revolvers (aside from the basic fact that I tend to shoot them best). It lists 25 reasons why revolvers are better than semi-autos. While I don't necessarily agree with every point, it was thought-provoking.

In addition to the reasons in the article and many of the more common reasons that others have cited, I carry a revolver because:

*They don't require magazines. One less thing to worry about.
*They have a lower cost for reliability testing with carry ammo. 3 or 4 cylinder-fulls (15-24 rounds depending on the gun) and I'm confident with its reliability as opposed to 200+ rounds of carry ammo with a semi-auto.
*They're more adaptable to dry-fire drills. Anything I can do live fire I can do dry fire with a revolver, minus the blast/flash, recoil, and holes in the paper. Ever try practicing a double tap with a Glock dry-firing? It goes like this: trigger press, hold back trigger, work slide just enough to reset trigger, re-acquire grip, release trigger, trigger press.
*Limp wristing is not a factor in proper functioning. I believe that if I'm ever forced to defend myself, it will most likely be from a close-range ambush-style assault. I may not be able to get a solid grip on the gun or I may have to fire from an awkward angle, either of which could potentially turn a semi-auto into a single shot pistol.
*Contact shots won't take a revolver out of battery. While training may overcome this issue, I believe the natural tendency will be to jam the muzzle into the attacker and pull the trigger.
*Reliability. This can be a controversial topic. But consider this. Semi-auto advocates say that when a revolver goes down, it's much worse than when a semi-auto goes down and is not as easy to resolve. However, most of the easily-cleared malfunctions that semi-autos experience are usually related to the feeding/extraction cycle, something that revolvers don't experience with the exception of a fail-to-fire due to bad ammo. In that case, you have to tap-rack-bang with a semi-auto versus pulling the trigger on a revolver.
*Snubs are easier to retain in a disarm attempt. The J-frame snubs are often regarded as being one of the most difficult weapons to take away. I recall Mas Ayoob saying the same thing about 2" K-frames. This also applies to...
*They have a better grip size. I have smallish hands. A Glock 23 is about the biggest gun I feel comfortable holding, but it's still much less comfortable and secure than holding a K or J-frame grip.
*They have better in-holster gripping. A semi-auto is flat up against the body when carried in a concealment holster. A revolver will leave a small gap for the thumb, making the initial grip easier to obtain.
*They conceal easier. The hardest part of a gun to conceal is the grip. I could conceal my K-frame revolver much more easily than I could ever conceal my Glock 23 when wearing the same style holster and wardrobe despite the "fat" cylinder.

Now, this is based on an assessment of my own life, where I go, how I conduct myself, and my typical routines as well as how much of my resources I can dedicate to practicing. If my situation were different than I might come to different conclusions and decide that a semi-auto was better suited to me. Other people will have different criteria that needs to be met and a revolver may not meet their needs. But it meets mine.

I carry a revolver because

1. Hundreds and hundreds of handgun matches clearly showed me that I shot faster and more accurately with revolvers . . . than with automatics. I've tracked my data for many seasons to understand this clearly.

2. Many times the very fastest centerfire scores from all the stock competition classes (including autos) came from the REVOLVER shooters . . . and I generally won the revolver classes in the area matches I've shot.

I finally realized I needed to stop drinking the gun magazine "kool-aid" about the latest/greatest high-cap bottom feeder being so wonderful. Gun writers sometimes do this when the advertisers are buying all the ad space to push their brass pukers with mediocre accuracy and triggers.

The hardest part was the first week or so I tried to go without my little CCW .45 auto for a full month . . . but that was years and years ago now!

Thus, I feel MUCH better protected with a S&W revolver in my hands!!!

In May, two friends and I, took the concealed carry for the state of New Mexico. One of my friends carries a Glock 23, his first handgun and the one he is most comfortable with. The second one doesnt have a designated concealed carry because he is more concerned with the name on the side or how cool it is(one of those guys who think if H&K dont make it, they dont want it). So he is on the fence on what to get.

I carry a 442 because it is reliable, small, and comes in a statistically backed cartridge. I could care less if it is not the sexiest or coolest pocket pistol out there. I care more about proven success and build quality.

Its in my pocket now!

Except for the Webley Fosbery most revolvers operate in the same fashion. Either you gotta cock it first or just pull the trigger to make the gun work. Autos have gizmos and safeties and interlocks and a lot of baloney specific to individual guns. I can change revolvers for carry and not worry which one I have. Also depending on the gun you can wind up with as much money tied up in magazines as you paid for the gun. I do keep a 9mm FN next to the bed.
