Transfering to Utah, Salt Lake City to be exact!
Orders are in, my next duty station will will be East Salt Lake City Utah. We haven't done a whole lot of looking into it yet, but I'm kind of looking forward to the change of scenery. The kids are very excited about having snow every winter!!!

Good Luck I hope you enjoy the change. Kids always love snow and that is worth it if they are excited.
God Bless and Thanks

Congrats. I am guessing you are going to be stationed at Fort Douglas? It is right on the campus of the University of Utah. I live about 2 miles away. We got snow last night and just about all the leaves are off the trees. Send me a PM and I'll tell you whatever you need to know. I've lived here for about 10 years and really like it. The people in SLC are very good people with a lot of different opinions, not just the predominant one that every thinks exists. A few good gun shops and nice range just about 5 minutes away up towards Park City. Like I said, send me a PM and we can talk. Safe travels.

It will be a big change for you geographicly speaking! It`s a good jumping off area to wyoming, idaho and colorado. The weather is about 35 degrees colder any given day of the year than where you are at!

Daniel,
I'll be a Marine recruiter. I'll be working out of a recruiting office on the East side of the city, I think it's on state street. We are considering living on Hill Air Force Base, but we haven't settled on that yet. I could be farther out East than the edge of the city, and I could also end up right in the middle of the city. I'll send you a private message when I get home.
Bill

If memory serves (I wouldn't put money on it, though), I think I saw a USMC recruiting office a couple blocks north of the Harley dealership - about the 2700-3000 block on South State.
I'd be interested in hearing about that nice range, too. I'll be back in SLC again next spring after the snow clears to visit family.
Good luck with your move. SLC really is a pretty nice place. When the opportunity permits, take your family down south to Arches, Zion, or Canyonlands Nat'l Park. You wont regret it even a little bit.

Your memory is correct. I looked up the address on Google Maps and the Harley shop is right down the road. I ride a Suzuki V-Strom currently, don't think I'll be upgrading any time soon, especially since the riding season is so short there.

That would be interesting. I just hope I get the time to shoot more, recruiting is a busy job, so I won't really know until I'm there.

The Suzuki shop is State and 23rd South. I take my Kawi there for the two year safety inspection. I'll keep an eye out for your PM. I may have insight for you on the commute from Hill AFB to SLC.

Bill,
Hope you will enjoy SLC. I can guarantee you will not enjoy a commute from HAFB to SLC, either direction. And if you obtain quarters in SLC you should draw RNA, if they still do that, as there is not a commissary within 25 miles.
FWIW, State Street is the middle of the city, not East Side. Yes, based on the totality of the metropolitan area it is on the eastern 1/3 of the valley. And you will be in the city of South Salt Lake, which ranges from 2100 S to 3900 S on State Street. In this area Main is the base street, one block west of State, but State is the base street in the south end of the valley.
The gun shop mentioned above is Gallenson's, at 168 E 200 South, less than 1 block from State Street. Come on down Saturday morning and I and some friends will probably be there and happy to meet you, if you can stand a bunch of old farts! Just ask for Al, George or Syl and just about any of the employees will know who you are asking for.
Forget about the Outdoorsman. It is re-barrelled, refinished, not at the same time, mis-matched stocks, and badly cared for after the refinish. It's a shooter, but sure nothing to be proud of at the price. Does have a McGivern bead on it though.

Ditto from me. That's not going to be a fun drive. That's the one thing negative I have to say about Utah, the drivers are a bit strange to say the least.

If you do decide to live near Hill AFB, take US 87 connecting to the Legacy Parkway into SLC. Lower traffic volume, no heavy trucks, and much better than I-15.

Thanks Buck. I haven't settled for sure on Hill. I may try the barracks life out there until I can get the family moved out next summer. They are going to stay here until school is out for a couple of reasons. Mainly, in my mind, we have already paid thier tuition for the full year. Second, probably more like first in my wife's mind, we don't want to relocate during the winter. The first thing my wife said after she stopped laughing when I told her we were going to SLC was, I hope you get to snowboard. The second thing was, I'm not moving there in the winter.

I have to say that winter in SLC is not as bad as on the east coast. The snow removal on the freeways and in the neighborhoods is good. It does get cold but not as humid so it doesn't cut into you like it does in NY or Penn. Having been able to ski most everywhere, the snow is the best. Try Brighton for snowboarding to start, after that choose your favorite.

We lived in Upstate NY for 4 years. The kids and I are looking forward to the snow. It'll grow on my wife, just going to take some time. Hopefully this winter I'll get to enjoy the slopes a bit since I'll be living the "single" life.

Ski resorts:
Brighton-best value for the terrain.
Solitude-just that, less crowded.
Alta-skiers only, steep, and next to Snowbird.
Snowbird-great terrain, and next to Alta.
Canyons-Snowboarders heaven.
Park City resort-Expensive, Snob central, and lot's of people that can't ski in their gucci snow bibs.
Any questions?

The range I prefer is outdoors, as it should be, and where all the SLC police departments go to practice. It's the PMAA range, I think that's what it's called? It's about 10 minutes up Parleys Canyon (I-80) and only cost about $5 bucks to shoot as long as you want. They have been getting donations for concrete shooting stands and replacing the older carpet covered wood jobs.
They also recently opened up a 5 stand skeet type range. Not traditional skeet or trap but something like it. If you want to shoot skeet and trap then the Lee Kay center out in West Valley is best. Problem there is when the wind is blowing east off the great salt lake then those pigeons are next to impossible to hit from the central most stances.
Best place to sight in the rifle is the BLM land in the west desert. That's where my buddy takes his 50 cal to keep her loose. You just have to be sure you stay far away from the 20 foot chain link fence with the signs that say something about the use of deadly force.

Welcome to Utah...You will love it here...If you get outside and take advantage of the beauty, you will see why we live here...
I see a lot of Utah brothers in the forum...Are there any local clubs or groups...Sometimes it's nice having more eyes when looking for stuff or group buys...
Again, welcome to Utah...I just call it Home!!!

I worked construction many years ago for two years out of SLC. I came to realize that SLC only has two weather seasons..........winter and road reconstruction/repaving season. :-)
I too enjoyed my time there. Great predator hunting available. ........ Big Cholla
