A question for those that have a desk job
If you routinely wear a gun, and your boss is okay with it (which, nowadays, probably means you're a cop), when you are sitting at your desk, do you remove your gun?
That's one of my great complaints with NCIS. You can always tell when they are going out on a job, because they all open their desk drawers and get out their gun. Then when they come back to the office, right away the gun goes in the drawer.
I remember some cop TV show, way back. He took his gun off, 'cause it was diggin' him in the side, and then later, at a crime, he reaches to his belt to find nothing, and there is a flashback of him putting it in the drawer.
That always seemed just so stupid, to me. If the gun's uncomfortable, when sitting at your desk, get a better holster. Taking the gun off seem to me to be right up there with taking my shoes off. Yes, I'd probably be more comfortable at my desk, but I wouldn't do it.
So - do any of y'all disarm while sitting?

<embarrassed> Yes. Self employed.
Put it in the drawer in the desk I'm sitting at. Honestly, IF I'm at my desk, I can probably open the drawer as fast as I can draw. I have to keep my car keys in that drawer, though, as, like your friend, I will leave without it.
Oh, I "dress" for work, so it's a pocket carry. That's why it's faster in the drawer.......

You are not safe at your desk. November 22, 1994
From the Officer Down Memorial Page web site,
Special Agent Martinez was shot and killed after a gunman entered the Metropolitan Police Headquarters "Cold Case Squad" room. As he entered, Sergeant Henry Joseph Daly, of the Metropolitan Police Department, confronted him to ask if he needed anything. The suspect then pulled out an automatic weapon and shot Sergeant Daly at point-blank range, killing him instantly. He then opened fire on the three FBI agents in the room, as they returned fire. Special Agent Martinez and Special Agent Michael John Miller were killed inside of the room and the third agent was shot and seriously wounded. Agent Martinez was able to shoot the suspect but did not kill him.
After being wounded, the suspect shot and killed himself.
The suspect had previously been a suspect in a triple homicide. After being questioned several times by Detectives, he was cleared, but members of the suspects gang labeled him a snitch. In order to redeem himself in the eyes of his fellow gang members, he decided to kill a police officer. A further investigation revealed that the suspect entered the "Cold Case Squad" office by mistake and was looking for the "Homicide Squad" office.
After an extensive investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the gun that was used by the suspect was traced back to a man in Kentucky who was illegally selling guns to convicted criminals. That man was eventually sentenced to 15 years in federal prison.
Special Agent Martinez had served with the Federal Bureau of Investigation for seven years.

I have a desk job and I am not allowed to carry a fire arm on company property even locked and unloaded in my vehicle. My working here gives company rights in their by-laws to search my person, office, or vehicle while on their property.

For 20+ years I worked as a contractor in Federal Buildings and Federal Courthouses.
I always noticed that the U.S. Marshalls, IRS C.I.D., U.S. Probation, and Fish and Wildlife officers all came into the building armed and left the same way.
When they were at their desks or out and about in the building, their holsters were always empty.
I saw them lock their weapons in their desks or in a common lockbox shared by others in their office.
Only exception was the Court Security Officers, they were always armed on federal property.
Never understood this.

Been wearing my gun at work for 21 years. Sitting down at my desk, boarding ships, working the airline passengers or the AOA. You get used to it.

Yes!!!
This is getting common in the private sector. I hate it, but can do nothing about it but quit/vote.
I vote for legal carry everywhere, but always lose.

My job requires me to be armed, so no, I don't EVER take it off. It's not supposed to be comfortable. On the downside, they won't let me wear a shoulder holster, either.

Short answer, no.
Two situations I have personal knowledge of. An officer from our department was hired by the FBI as a Special Agent. He didn't last long, as within 2-3 years he was sitting in his office in Denver one day when a man walked into his office in the Federal Building and shot him to death. Never did hear if a motive was ever discovered. You are not safe, even in your office!
Second. Several FBI Agents in the Salt Lake City office walked together to the bank across the street from the Federal Building, walked right into a bank robbery in-progress. Not a single one of them was armed! Guess where their guns were, across the street in their desks!!!!!
You have my answer.

Ken Null seems to make a great holster for use when primarily seated. Calls it the Vampire model: K.L. Null Holsters Home Page Looks very comfortable, tho OWB so not concealed with your jacket off. Would be great for someone who is primarily at a desk or in a car/truck. For snubbies, tho, not large frames.

Most of my work now is at a computer terminal for my agency. My M&P stays at my side all the time. I will always be ready to respond if needed and respond right now.
Several times we have had situations where we needed all hands on deck and do not need to delay any more than necessary.

Jimmy's Rule: If its not on your person, its too far away.
When I was not on patrol and sitting at my desk-my service weapon was on my hip and my BUG was on my vest.

When I worked a desk assignment, I always kept it with me. On one department, they used to call the detectives "the empty holster set," because they all walked around the station with no gun in their holster. Not me- you never know when/where you might need it!

I worked Corrections. Inside is a definate no-no for firearms unless assigned to a inside overhead gun-walk or or ground level armed post covering inmate activity. The Tower officers were always required at all times to wear the side arm even though you were outside the fense perimeter and were virtually out of reach behind a locked door. Some officers would take it off half way through the shift but, there would be hell to pay if caught if visited by the Sgt. and forgot to put it back on.
I was a Sergeant who at times supervised the towers, I was required to wear a holster and keep the handgun locked in a strong box in the cab and holster it if needed. I even removed the holster from my belt before entering inside of the prison. Funny thing, every inmate would immediately notice my holster when inside and some of us decided to start removing them before going inside and then it became policy. Them inmates may not be smart but they have masters degree in noticing things and body language.
While at home I always have a handgun close and always for the most part carry when going out or traveling.

These days you can't get past a locked door and bullet proof glass at most of the local PD offices.

I wear a nylon Sam Browne belt and an Uncle Mike's holster. I spend most of my shift at my desk. It's a big no-no to unholster the pistol in the building. So, yes, I'm armed the entire day.
At home, there is a handgun either in my pocket or within arm's reach at all times.

Today is a good example. I am working all day, sitting at a desk. I am also on call and subject to leaving at any time. I am also armed. I take my sidearm out of the holster and put it on the desk I will be using. It is more of a receptionist job, taking complaints, handling problems and such. There is a shelf under the window in front of the desk where people stand. I slide the gun under the ledge of the shelf where it is readily accessible. If I have to leave, then the gun goes with me and the replacement person is on their own.
I will have the same desk job on Dec 23, Dec 24, Dec 26, Dec 31 and Jan 02. Unless I am doing paperwork, I will not sit at a desk otherwise except on the days around holidays and that is to allow people to be with their families at home.

I work in warehouses most of the day, but I also have a desk in the main office. I'm probably sitting at my desk for a couple hours throughout the day. My firearm never leaves my hip, no matter if I'm sweating in the warehouse or sitting at my desk. It is on my hip for 14+ hours/day, only taken off when I have to poop.

My father was NCIS for 25 years. He carried a M36 in a soft briefcase unloaded with 5 loose bullets
I asked him once what good that would do him if he needed it? He said if I go somewhere that I think I will need protection, I bring Marines.

After a disagreement that was ten seconds away becoming a fist fight with my shift LT. ya gotta remember ya will win one of those. I ended up spending 60 days assigned as the lobby desk officer. So, I thought I show THE POWERS to be. I showed every day in full uniform less my gun belt and unarmed. That really made him angry, but the regs. did not require that the desk officer be armed when working at the station. What no one realized was I was wearing a 2 ½” model 19 in a shoulder holster under my uniform shirt.
My career at that place was short lived after that last bit of rebellion after that.
That was Ok as I fell into a much better offer in the same field.

I have always had a snub nosed .38 Sp. mounted in a holster on the right
side of the knee space of my desk. It can't be seen from the front, but I
know it's there and I can get it in my hand quicker than I can draw it from
a holster on my belt. Now that the secret is out, I will need to rethink it.
